Research Brief: "Exploring The Role Of Social Connectedness Among Military Youth: Perceptions From Youth, Parents, And School Personnel", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
The purpose of this study is to analyze the experiences of military youth as they go through the process of parental deployment, relocation, and interacting with the stressors of consistently adjusting to new places (including making new friends, etc.). The future research recommended for this study includes sampling from a larger population, as well as from a greater number of families involved with other armed forces' experiences.

Paying Our Presidents: What Do Trustees Value?, Ronald G. Ehrenberg, John J. Cheslock, Julia Epifantseva
Ronald G. Ehrenberg
Our study makes use of data from a panel of over 400 private colleges and universities on their presidents’ salaries and benefits. These data, reported annually to the Internal Revenue Service on Form 990, have been collected by and reported in the Chronicle of Higher Education for academic years 1992–1993 through 1997–1998. We merge these data with those from other sources including the American Association of University Professors, the American Council on Education, Who’s Who in America, the National Association of College and University Business Officers, the Council on Aid to Education, and the National Science Foundation’s CASPAR system. This …
Shifting Welfare, Shifting People: Rural Development, Housing And Population Mobility In Australia, Rae Dufty, Christopher Gibson
Shifting Welfare, Shifting People: Rural Development, Housing And Population Mobility In Australia, Rae Dufty, Christopher Gibson
Chris Gibson
Rural welfare is more than addressing problems of ‘poverty’. As we argue here, social policy initiatives are also conceived by governments as solutions to geographical problems about uneven regional development and population distribution. What these problems were, and how welfare provision could solve them, has varied from generation to generation and takes shape in place-specific ways. That welfare provision has operated as de facto geographical development and population policy is particularly the case in Australia, in its context of massive continental size and heterogeneous rural places. In Australia, the ‘rural’ means much more than just the ‘countryside’ surrounding or between …
Are School Superintendents Rewarded For “Performance”?, Ronald G. Ehrenberg, Richard P. Chaykowski, Randy Ann Ehrenberg
Are School Superintendents Rewarded For “Performance”?, Ronald G. Ehrenberg, Richard P. Chaykowski, Randy Ann Ehrenberg
Ronald G. Ehrenberg
[Excerpt] This chapter presents analyses of the compensation and mobility of school superintendents in New York State during the 1978-79 to 1982-83 period. The focus is on school superintendents because they are the chief operating officers of school districts, their salaries are determined through individual "negotiations" with school boards, and their salary data were made available to us. In contrast, school principals' salary data were not available to us. Especially in large districts, principals tend to be members of a union and their salary increases negotiated collectively, which limits the likelihood of observing individual principals' salaries being related to measures …
Empirical Consequences Of Comparable Worth, Ronald G. Ehrenberg
Empirical Consequences Of Comparable Worth, Ronald G. Ehrenberg
Ronald G. Ehrenberg
[Excerpt] To help focus subsequent debate, this paper presents a nontechnical survey of the small but growing empirical literature by economists on the consequences of comparable worth. I discuss in turn studies of the consequences of comparable worth on the male-female earnings gap, of its potential to affect adversely the employment of women, of its effects on the labor supply and occupational mobility of women, and of its effects on women and their families as a group. The survey is critical in nature and points to areas in which research is needed.
Conceptualizing The Creative Tourist Class: Technology, Mobility And Tourism Experiences, Ulrike Gretzel, Jamal Tazim
Conceptualizing The Creative Tourist Class: Technology, Mobility And Tourism Experiences, Ulrike Gretzel, Jamal Tazim
Ulrike Gretzel
Increasing mobilities and an ever greater amount of technologies that support creativity have led to the emergence of a so-called Creative Class in our postmodern society. Creative Class members have distinctive experiences that blur the boundaries between everyday and touristic life. These experiences challenge conventional typologies of the tourist experience and have tremendous implications for tourism research and practice. In this article we discuss first what the Creative Class is, what experiences it has, and how it uses emerging technologies to create, mediate, and reconstruct these experiences. A special emphasis is placed on the relationship the Creative Class has with …
Determinants Of The Compensation And Mobility Of School Superintendents, Ronald G. Ehrenberg, Richard P. Chaykowski, Randy Ehrenberg
Determinants Of The Compensation And Mobility Of School Superintendents, Ronald G. Ehrenberg, Richard P. Chaykowski, Randy Ehrenberg
Ronald G. Ehrenberg
Analyzing 197-83 panel data from more than 700 New York State school districts, the authors find evidence that school superintendents were rewarded, both by higher salary increases and by enhanced opportunities to move to belter-paying jobs, for having low school tax rates and high educational achievement within their districts, relative to the values of those variables in comparable school districts in the state. The rewards were, however, quite small. The analysis also suggests that the superintendents themselves did not significantly influence either school tax rates or educational test scores in their districts.
"It's About Time You Came Out": Sexualities, Mobility And Home, Gordon R. Waitt, Andrew W. Gorman-Murray
"It's About Time You Came Out": Sexualities, Mobility And Home, Gordon R. Waitt, Andrew W. Gorman-Murray
Gordon Waitt
Helping redress the dominance of metropolitan narratives upon which much literature on sexuality is framed, this article interprets the narrative told by a "white" 16-year-old man living in regional Australia. Our aim is to investigate the intersections of migration and homemaking in sexual subject formation. Finding a place to call "home" can be a complex process for young men born in regional Australia and not conforming to the social formations of a "normal guy". This young man's narrative expressively reveals the fluidity and spatiality inherent in processes of negotiating sexual subjectivities. His story provides telling insights into how migration and …
The Materiality Of Mobile Pastoralism: Ethnoarchaeological Perspectives From Samburu, Kenya, Katherine Mary Grillo
The Materiality Of Mobile Pastoralism: Ethnoarchaeological Perspectives From Samburu, Kenya, Katherine Mary Grillo
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
This thesis represents the first comprehensive ethnoarchaeological study to date on the material culture of African mobile pastoralism, a way of life economically, culturally, and ideologically centered on the herding of livestock. In Africa, tens of millions of people today still rely on cattle-based pastoralism for survival in arid lands that are unsuitable for agricultural production. Our understanding of ancient pastoralism is still hampered, however, by a belief held by many that nomadic populations such as pastoralists are difficult to trace in the archaeological record. Results from ethnographic research among modern Samburu cattle pastoralists in Kenya in fact challenge common …
Mapping Women's Movement In Medieval England, Claire Clement
Mapping Women's Movement In Medieval England, Claire Clement
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates women’s geographical movement in medieval England from the perspective of mobility and freedom. It uses pilgrimage accounts from medieval miracle story collections and to gather information about individual travel patterns. The study uses GIS to analyze gendered mobility patterns, and to investigate whether there were noticeable differences in the distance which men and women traveled and the geographical area of the country they originated. It also analyzes the nearness of men’s and women’s respective origin towns to alternative pilgrimage locations, as a means of examining the factors determining gendered travel mobility. The study finds that women’s travel …
Parental Relocation: Factors Present In Judges’ Decisions, Emily A. Reddick
Parental Relocation: Factors Present In Judges’ Decisions, Emily A. Reddick
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Abstract
The present study examined multiple factors that may account for Canadian judges’ decisions in relocation cases where one parent contests a move away by the other parent and children after separation. The decisions were collected from a stratified random sample of judgments consisting of 50 cases where the relocation was approved and 50 where it was denied. The cases reviewed took place between 1996 and 1999 and followed the highly criticized Supreme Court decision in Gordon v. Goertz.
Cases were analyzed to determine the extent to which child, parent, judicial, move, and legal factors predicted court outcomes. All identified …
Freeway Deconstruction: Impacts And Prospects, Jerry Giordano
Freeway Deconstruction: Impacts And Prospects, Jerry Giordano
Geography and the Environment Capstone Projects
Freeway deconstruction signifies an abrupt shift in urban policy (Switalski 2004). After 50 years of the greatest road-building binge in world history, cities since the 1960’s have more seriously considered the benefits of road removal and have increasingly incorporated it into their urban planning toolkit (Preservation Institute 2007). Each decade since the 1960’s includes more deconstruction proposals and projects. Priorities are shifting away from designing cities to enhance mobility, and toward promoting livability (Switalski 2004). My research question is: Is Richmond is a suitable location for a successful freeway deconstruction project?
Paper prepared for the Environmental Studies Senior Seminar/Geography Capstone.
The Influence Of London On Labor Markets In Southern England, 1830-1914, George R. Boyer
The Influence Of London On Labor Markets In Southern England, 1830-1914, George R. Boyer
George R. Boyer
[Excerpt] Historians have long acknowledged that London, because of its enormous size and rapidly growing demand for labor, acted as a powerful magnet for migrants from throughout southern England. However, while there is a large literature documenting the flow of migrants to London, there have been surprisingly few attempts to determine the consequences of this migration for southern labor markets. This article attempts to redress the imbalance in the literature by examining the influence of London on agricultural labor markets during the nineteenth century. In particular, the article examines the effect of distance from London on wage rates in southern …
Migration And Labour Market Integration In Late Nineteenth-Century England And Wales, George R. Boyer
Migration And Labour Market Integration In Late Nineteenth-Century England And Wales, George R. Boyer
George R. Boyer
[Excerpt] There is a long and well established tradition of studies analysing the pattern and causes of internal migration and assessing the degree of labour market integration in late nineteenth-century Britain. Some studies document the flows of migrants from one area to another and describe migrant characteristics and the directions of the predominant streams of migration. Others analyse the determinants of gross or net migration flows at the region or county level. The questions implicit in these studies are: How mobile was the labour force? What were the major factors which determined individual decisions to migrate? How are these factors …

Brazil’S Deferred Highway: Mobility, Development, And Anticipating The State In Amazonia, Jeremy M. Campbell
Brazil’S Deferred Highway: Mobility, Development, And Anticipating The State In Amazonia, Jeremy M. Campbell
Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications
Four decades ago, Brazilian officials plotted designs for colonization and resource extraction in Amazonia; subsequently the region has become a test-lab for successive development regimes. Along the Santarém-Cuiabá Highway (Br-163) in the state of Pará, residents have engaged in a range of licit and illicit activities as official development policy has shifted throughout the years. Despite assertions that living along the unpaved road is tantamount to “being stuck” in place and time, residents move widely throughout the region, using the road, trails, streams, and rivers as thoroughfares. I argue that “being stuck” functions as a discursive label for illegible mobilities …
