This chapter reports on an ethnographic study of the experiences, practices and feelings of academic librarians who teach information literacy. Based on in-depth interviews with nine librarians who have information literacy responsibilities – five in West Virginia and four in Colorado – it examines the real-life work of practitioners in a wide variety of instructional environments. The research considers participants’ preparation for their instructional role, ambiguity about the concept of information literacy, instructional challenges and professional practices. The authentic voices of instructional librarians provide insights into the roadblocks they face, success they experience and their expectations for the future.

This video demonstrates how to select appropriate search terms to narrow the scope of searches in the ScienceDirect database. Natural language searches are often more effective when searching the full text of an article. Once the researcher has located one or more articles, the researcher is more likely to identify any jargon or scientific terms used for the topic. The present article shows the results of a survey aimed at identifying the informational abilities of Havana University students. Several methods such as the survey, expert’s interviews and content and document analysis are used. The questionnaire has been structured base on three basic variables: information search, information analysis and release and self-evaluation elements. The identification of these abilities was a key element for guiding libraries in the development of actions focused on their communities.

[Poster Presentation] Pre-service teachers at Boise State University enrolled in a piloted one-credit library research course, in which the POGIL method was used to teach information literacy and Web 2.0 skills. The faculty librarian employed the POGIL learning method in order to improve students’ depth of learning and increase their engagement with the information-seeking process. Learning outcomes included building pre-service teachers’ content knowledge; increasing familiarity with inquiry learning; recognizing and solving information problems using the Big6 Skills framework; evaluating primary and secondary sources; and utilizing state-funded information resources in their teaching. As institutions of higher learning rapidly expand their offerings of online, hybrid and other distance learning opportunities for their students, librarians must adapt, adopt and improve information literacy instruction methods to accommodate instructors they may never meet and classes they may never see. Many responses to these challenges, such as embedded librarians and tutorial development, however, can be time consuming, expensive and resource-draining.
