Oil Exploitation As A Factor Of Violent Conflict Between Sudan And South Sudan, Anne Hamilton Dec 2012

Oil Exploitation As A Factor Of Violent Conflict Between Sudan And South Sudan, Anne Hamilton

Anne Hamilton

Sudan was in a state of civil war for most of the years following independence in 1956, apart from a temporary respite between 1972 and 1983. After hostilities resumed, the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) captured Leer from the government in March 1986, and the town became a stronghold of the rebel commander Riek Machar, who had been born there. In August 1991 Riek Machar broke away from John Garang's mainstream branch of the SPLM/A. Machar's breakaway faction was called the SPLM/A-Nasir faction from 1991 to 1993, and then the South Sudan Independence ...

An Assessment Of The Effects Of Desertification In Yobe State, Nigeria, Jibril Musa Phd Dec 2012

An Assessment Of The Effects Of Desertification In Yobe State, Nigeria, Jibril Musa Phd

Confluence Journal Environmental Studies (CJES), Kogi State University, Nigeria

Desertification is one of the most serious environmental and socio-economic problems of our time. Desertification describes circumstances of land degradation in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid regions resulting from the climatic variation and human activities. The fundamental goal of this thesis was to assess the effects of desertification in Yobe State, Nigeria. The present threat of desertification in the sahel has reached an alarming stage where crops cultivation and animal rearing/grazing are no more productive, soil has lost its nutrient/fertility, various infrastructure had given way because of windstorm from the neighbouring Niger Republic and sand dunes had taken ...

Emerging Technologies: What's Around The Corner? And Why Should We Care?, Robert L. Nunez Ii

Robert L Nunez II

There are so many possibilities for what is right around the corner with technology. A number of the technologies that we take for granted now were originally called fads by many, so the begs the question "What is right around the corner and why should I care?"

Optimal Environmental Taxation With Pre-Commitment And Green R&D, Stuart Mcdonald Dec 2012

Optimal Environmental Taxation With Pre-Commitment And Green R&D, Stuart Mcdonald

Stuart McDonald

Two approaches for modelling investment in R\&D have been developed by d'Aspremont and Jacquemin (AJ, 1988) and Kamien, Muller and Zang (KMZ, 1992), when there are spillovers associated with R\&D effort. This paper examines how these two approaches predict investment in green technology, when environmental policy takes the form of an optimal emission tax. The results show that the two models are equivalent when there are no R\&D spillovers; but when R\&D spillovers are present, significant differences in their predictions are observed. Specifically, the KMZ model predicts higher emission tax rates, higher level of R\&D expenditures and higher levels of aggregate emissions than the AJ model, under both cooperative and non-cooperative R\&D regimes. The KMZ model also predicts a counter intuitive positive relationship between R\&D spillovers and emissions taxes when firms choose not to cooperate in R\&D. Due to these results, we argue the KMZ model is of questionable validity when modelling green technology R\&D.

Dr. Fanan Ujoh

Reservoirs are Man’s attempt towards water re-distribution from regions/seasons of abundance/surplus to regions/seasons of scarcity. This study focuses on socio-environmental impacts of the Lower Usuma dam in Abuja, on its four surrounding communities. Stratified random sampling technique was employed in the administration of a questionnaire to 200 respondents. Using descriptive statistics and the student t-test for the analysis, the study discovered that: (i) there has been no significant improvement in infrastructure provision by Government; (ii) cases of water-borne diseases are high; (iii) the communities have lost land for cultivation; and, (iv) the communities believe that the ...

Transnational Models Of Citizen Participation: The Case Of Participatory Budgeting, Yves Sintomer, Carsten Herzberg, Anja Roecke Dec 2012

Transnational Models Of Citizen Participation: The Case Of Participatory Budgeting, Yves Sintomer, Carsten Herzberg, Anja Roecke

yves sintomer

This article pursues two main objectives. First, it provides a transnational overview and analysis of participatory budgeting, which has been central to the literature on democratic innovations in citizen participation. Second, it combines this broad empirical project with a theoretical approach based on the construction of ideal-types in the Weberian tradition. Namely, it presents six models of citizen participation: participatory democracy, proximity democracy, participative modernization, multi-stakeholder participation, community development and neo-corporatism. Although these models have evolved from participatory budgeting and the European context, it is our contention that they can help us to understand the socio-political and ideological dynamics, contexts ...

Los Gabinetes Binacionales, Fernando Carrión Mena Arq. Dec 2012

Examining Crime Among College-Aged Christians: Are Christian Religious Beliefs Associated With Low Levels Of Criminal Activity?, Paul R. Rickert

Paul R Rickert

The purpose of this correlational study into crime among college-aged Christians in the United States is to determine if indicating higher levels of Christian spiritual growth is associated with lower levels of criminal behavior. A convenience sample of college aged Christians was given an online survey to measure self-reported criminality measured by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Uniform Crime Reports Part I and Part II and self-reported religious convictions as measured by Bufford et al.’s Christ-like Spiritual Growth Scale. This quantitative study then analyzed data generated from 57 respondents and found that reporting higher rates of ...

The 1993 'Velvet Divorce' Re-Visited, Jan Krouzil Dec 2012

The 1993 'Velvet Divorce' Re-Visited, Jan Krouzil

Jan Krouzil

This is a personal reflection on the dissolution of Czechoslovakia on 1 January 1993. It inquires into the circumstances precipitating the separation, the reasons for the division, and the process of the dissolution itself. It seeks to situate the significance of the event for both now 'divorced' entities in the context of the European Union integration. It argues that while not entirely inevitable, the way the dissolution has occurred may provide some useful lessons for other nation-state entities both within and outside of the European Union.

The Smallest Upper Bound For The Pth Absolute Central Moment Of A Class Of Random Variables, Martin Egozcue, Luis Fuentes García, Wing Keung Wong, Ricardas Zitikis Dec 2012

The Smallest Upper Bound For The Pth Absolute Central Moment Of A Class Of Random Variables, Martin Egozcue, Luis Fuentes García, Wing Keung Wong, Ricardas Zitikis

Martin Egozcue

We establish the smallest upper bound for the p absolute central moment over the class of all random variables with values in a compact interval. Numerical values of the bound are calculated for the first ten integer values of p, and its asymptotic behaviour derived when p tends to infinity. In addition, we establish an analogous bound in the case of all symmetric random variables with values in a compact interval. Such results play a role in a number of areas including actuarial science, economics, finance, operations research, and reliability.

The Bank Of Tanzania (Bot) As The Custodian Of The Tanzanian Economy: Opportunities And Challenges, Conrad John Masabo Mr.

Conrad John Masabo Mr.

When Tanzania embarked on fundamental transformation of its economy almost two decades ago one of the top agenda in the economic reforms was the need to overhaul the financial system. And in view of pivotal role it plays in the country’s economy, the banking sector was the first to undergo reforms. Implementation of the reforms followed recommendations of the Presidential Commission on the need to modernize the banking sector dubbed the Nyirabu Commission. The BOT Act of 1995 was a landmark in Tanzania’s monetary history by adopting a single policy objective, i.e. price stability and moving away ...

Research Approach Exploring Integrating Employment And Family Policy: Review Of Policy Objectives For The Population Policy White Paper In Taiwan, Chih-Lung Huang

Chih-lung Huang

One of the main purposes of the Population Policy White Paper in Taiwan is to seek solutions to the baby bust trend. Through strengthening family policy, the Population Policy White Paper in Taiwan tries to satisfy the need for a balance between work and family for women. However, the need is not only concerned with the baby bust problem, but also about the institutional and structural problems on culture and welfare systems under the conventional male breadwinner model. This article will explain the reason why the issue of work and family life balance should consider gender equality. Through the dual ...

Euro Introduction And Export Behaviour Of Italian Firms, Claudio Vicarelli, Carmine Pappalardo Dec 2012

Euro Introduction And Export Behaviour Of Italian Firms, Claudio Vicarelli, Carmine Pappalardo

Claudio Vicarelli

Recent literature has focused on the importance of extensive and intensive margins of trade in the case of the Euro adoption. Using a unique dataset taken from ISTAT firm level data, we study the effects of euro introduction on Italian manufacturing firms. We focus our analysis on the period 1996-2004, covering three years before and six years after the euro introduction. We estimate a gravity equation using difference-in difference estimation techniques. Firm-level evidence shows that the euro had indeed a positive influence on Italian exports, mainly channelled through the intensive margin, whereas the extensive margin was not significantlyimportant. This result ...

Field extension functionaries preferred group discussion as the main source of extension programme followed by demonstration, fisheries publication and field day/ fish farmers ...

Constraints In Adoption Of Moongbean Production Technology In Sundarban, West Bengal, Ganesh Chandra Dec 2012

Constraints In Adoption Of Moongbean Production Technology In Sundarban, West Bengal, Ganesh Chandra

Ganesh Chandra

The new agricultural technologies are considered to be the prime mover to the process of agricultural development in India. Understanding farmers’ perceptions of a given technology is crucial in the generation and diffusion of new technologies and farm household information dissemination. Pulses in India have long been considered as the poor man’s only source of protein. Moongbean (green gram) is one of the important pulse crop in India, plays a major role in augmenting the income of small and marginal farmers of Sundarban. Constraints are the circumstances or causes, which prohibit farmer to adopt improved farm technology. This constraint ...

How You Estimate The Yield Curve Matters!, Luiz Paulo Fichtner, Pedro Santa-Clara Dec 2012

How You Estimate The Yield Curve Matters!, Luiz Paulo Fichtner, Pedro Santa-Clara

Luiz Paulo Fichtner

We evaluate a two-factor Cox et al. (1985a,b) model using Euribor zero-coupon yields. We estimate this model using a state-space framework, where we sum a log-likelihood function of the state vector dynamics to a log-likelihood function of cross-section pricing errors. We introduce a likelihood-scaling weight in the joint log-likelihood function and show that there is a tradeoff in how one estimates a yield curve. Giving more weight to the cross-section of pricing errors improves the fitting and forecasting of Euribor yields, while giving more weight to the log-likelihood function of the state vector dynamics improves interest rate derivative pricing ...
