Assessing Sme Innovation Within Different Cluster Models: Lessons From The Australian Wine Industry, David Aylward, John Glynn Oct 2012

Assessing Sme Innovation Within Different Cluster Models: Lessons From The Australian Wine Industry, David Aylward, John Glynn

John J Glynn

This paper assesses core innovation activity among SMEs within different levels of cluster development. The aim of the paper, using empirical data from the Australian wine industry, is to demonstrate that innovation levels and activity intensify as an industry cluster develops. By dividing wine clusters into ‘innovative’ (highly developed) and ‘organised’ (less developed) models, the paper uses selected core indicators of innovation activity to explore levels of integration within each model. This integration is examined in the context of Porter’s theory of ‘competitive advantage’, with implications for SMEs in particular, and lessons for industry clusters in general.

Challenges And Opportunities In Hosting Mid-Career International Scholars, Edward Roslof, Dolgormaa Jamiyan, Evan Poata-Smith, Sudha Shetty

Evan S. Te Ahu Poata-Smith

This session will explore challenges and opportunities in hosting mid-career international scholars by examining two Fulbright programs (Humphrey Fellowships and Scholars-in- Residence) that are unique in requiring U.S. institutions to initiate the application process. Panelists will discuss how these programs: foster a mutual exchange of knowledge and understanding; help U.S. institutions of higher education advance their international presence; assist in faculty and curriculum development; and diversify and enrich their campus and the surrounding host community.

Comparison Of Computerised Dietary Assessments With Diet History And Food Record Data At Baseline In An Australian Food-Based Clinical Trial, Yasmine Probst, Virva Sarmas, Linda C. Tapsell

L. C. Tapsell

Background: Food-based clinical trials are vital to advance the scientific evidence for the impact of food on health. These trials reqUire stringent dietary assessment to substantiate effects. We are evaluating the use of a self-administered computerised dietary assessment (DietAdvice) in a current food based weight loss trial. Objective: This cross sectional study aims to compare data from DietAdvice with diet history (DH) and food record (FR) dietary assessments measured at baseline. Materials and Methods: Baseline data for n=71 overweight (23-60 years, BMI 25-37 kg/m2) participants was utilised. Macronutrient data for matched dietary assessments from n=32 participants was obtained for the …

Marketing Experts' Assessment Of Healthy Eating Messages In Australian Food Advertising, Sandra C. Jones, Peter G. Williams, Linda C. Tapsell Jul 2012

Marketing Experts' Assessment Of Healthy Eating Messages In Australian Food Advertising, Sandra C. Jones, Peter G. Williams, Linda C. Tapsell

L. C. Tapsell

The social world can be described in terms of experts and consumers, identified by their roles and responsibilities towards each other. The advertising and marketing of products based on nutritional value is widespread, and attended to by consumers, yet research in the marketing and nutrition domains suggests that consumers may lack the requisite knowledge and skills to evaluate and use this information appropriately. This concern can be viewed from a sociological perspective, and a theoretical framework for studying this context can be provided by ethnomethodology which describes how people make sense of their social world. This study was the second …

Start Date May Predict Attrition 6 Months Into A 12mth Dietary Intervention Weight Loss Trial, Jane O'Shea, Linda C. Tapsell, Marijka Batterham, Karen Charlton, Yasmine Probst, Rebecca Thorne, Qingsheng Zhang, Holley Jones

L. C. Tapsell

Participant recruitment is a difficult and time consuming aspect of clinical trials, often resulting in delays and budget overruns. Having reached recruitment targets the next challenge is participant retention. Some weight-loss studies have attrition rates around 60% which may introduce bias in the results. It may be possible to reduce attrition rates if known predictors can be found but to date few studies produced consistent results. The aim of this exploratory study was to determine whether start date could be a predictor of attrition for participants involved in the SMART weight loss clinical trial (ACTRN12608000425392). Recruitment for the trial occurred …

Providing Language And Academic Skills Support In A Multi-Media And Distributed Learning Environment, Jeannette Stirling, L. Celeste Rossetto Jun 2012

Providing Language And Academic Skills Support In A Multi-Media And Distributed Learning Environment, Jeannette Stirling, L. Celeste Rossetto

Jeannette Stirling

[extract] This paper examines the role of the language and academic skills (LAS) lecturer in a multi-media and geographically distributed learning environment at the University of Wollongong. By this we mean providing language and academic skills support where subjects comprising various degree programs are taught simultaneously across a range of networked satellite campuses including, at times, the central campus: hence the idea of a ‘distributed learning environment’. Subject delivery to this network of campuses is variously achieved through the use of multi-media teaching and learning technologies such as videoconferencing, web-based resources, online discussion spaces, pod-cast lectures, and face-to-face tutorials. We …

Truth Games/Truth Claims : Resisting Institutional Notions Of Las As Remediation, Jeannette Stirling, Alisa Percy Jun 2012

Truth Games/Truth Claims : Resisting Institutional Notions Of Las As Remediation, Jeannette Stirling, Alisa Percy

Jeannette Stirling

Michel Foucault argues that the technologies of identity – whether professional or institutional – rely on what he calls ‘games of truth’. He argues that these truth games comprise ‘an ensemble of rules for the production of truth . . . which can be considered in function of its principles and its rules of procedure as valid or not’ (cited in Gauthier, 1988, p. 15). Moreover, we can only become subjects by ‘subjecting’ ourselves to selected truth games because there is neither selfhood nor truth outside of these games. For Foucault, the subject’s power in this process is to decide …

Representation For (Re)Invention, Alisa Percy, Jeannette Stirling Jun 2012

Representation For (Re)Invention, Alisa Percy, Jeannette Stirling

Jeannette Stirling

In her plenary address to the 2001 Australian Language and Academic Skills Conference, Carolyn Webb (2002, p. 7) suggested that in comparison to other educational developers in the university context, Language and Academic Skills (LAS) practitioners had been less strategic in addressing their identity and practice ‘to secure their place in the landscape of university work, [and] to reinvent themselves for securing future places’. She concluded with the suggestion that LAS practitioners might wish to see themselves as ‘facilitators of organisational learning’ (Webb, 2002, p. 17). Both of these points will be addressed in the following discussion. This paper argues …

Weaving The Academic And Social: Working In Higher Education On Rural And Remote Australian Campuses, Jeannette Stirling, Celeste Rossetto Jun 2012

Weaving The Academic And Social: Working In Higher Education On Rural And Remote Australian Campuses, Jeannette Stirling, Celeste Rossetto

Jeannette Stirling

Our paper examines the complexities of providing academic learning support for students studying at small rural and regional Australian university campuses. As educators who live and work in regional campus communities, we have come to understand that the academic advice provided on campus has the potential to resonate through the social, and vice versa. We argue that, despite these complexities, this weaving of the social and academic can result in a teaching process more akin to a co-production of knowledge rather than the traditional didactic models of teaching employed at larger campuses where, in this type of populous environment, the …

Coming Of Age: Developing A Genealogy Of Knowledge In The Las Field, Alisa Percy, Jeannette Stirling Jun 2012

Coming Of Age: Developing A Genealogy Of Knowledge In The Las Field, Alisa Percy, Jeannette Stirling

Jeannette Stirling

Quality teaching and learning in higher education has become a mantra in the rhetoric of university policies, and, increasingly, assuring successful student learning is seen asthe core business of the modern university. Ironically, this comes at a time when academic staff are faced with unprecedented demands on their teaching repertoire while being expected to function with fewer resources. Not surprisingly then, many LAS staff find themselves, their knowledge and their skills central to ensuring the university's aspirations, yet in many ways still under threat of intellectual erasure. A contributing factor to this threat, it is argued, is the lack of …

Seasonal Work And Aboriginal Employment In Two Nsw Rural Areas, Robert Castle, James Hagan

Robert G. Castle

This paper has several areas of focus. It chronicles the history of Aboriginal employment in Australia in two contrasting areas; it identifies the characteristics of that employment and traces the nature of its change over time; it outlines the attitude of Aborigines towards their work, and the impact of that work on Aboriginal society; it also considers the attitudes of white Australians towards Aborigines and their employment. Finally, it draws some conclusions concerning the responses of the Aborigines to pressures put on them by the economy and society of the white man.

The International Labour Organisation And The Australian Contribution To The International Labour Standards Debate, Chris Nyland, Robert Castle Jun 2012

The International Labour Organisation And The Australian Contribution To The International Labour Standards Debate, Chris Nyland, Robert Castle

Robert G. Castle

Summarizes the debate between those who are urging the World Trade Organization to adopt a social clause that links the right to engage in international trade with basic labour rights, and those who believe that this would harm the ability of developing countries to compete with the advanced economies because it would prevent them paying lower wages to their workers. Sets out the background to this debate, before examining how it has been carried forward in Australia, looking at the submissions made to the Duffy Report, published in 1996, and the subsequent debate. Analyses the positions taken by the Australian …
