Preservation And Access In An Age Of E-Science And Electronic Records: Sharing The Problem And Discovering Common Solutions, Claire Stewart

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

As academic libraries grapple with the challenge of preserving their own digitized special collections, intensification of interest in preserving other electronic content may present opportunities to collaborate with organizations on campus. This article offers a brief introduction to some of the core issues in digital preservation and suggests an orientation to the problems that can be helpful in thinking about how to join forces with others on campus.

Partnering With It To Help Disadvantaged Students Achieve Academic Success, Janet H. Clarke

Library Faculty Publications

This case study will describe how the Stony Brook University Libraries instruction program partnered with another student support service (student computing office) to nurture a relationship with the Educational Opportunities Program (EOP) over several years to provide their students with the library research and computer skills needed to succeed in college. EOP is a state-funded program aimed at economically disadvantaged students whose high school education has not fully prepared them for college success.

Interest in integrative health care is a growing area of health practice, combining conventional medical treatments with safe and effective complementary and alternative medicine. These modalities relate to both improving physical and psychological well-being, and enhancing conventional talk therapy. In an interdisciplinary collaboration, teaching and library faculty have created a series of sixteen on-line video interviews that introduce practitioner-relevant experiences to students as supplemental course material. These videos are available through the department web-pages to students in other related disciplines as well, including Social Work, Counselor Education, Psychology, and the Colleges of Public Health, Nursing, and Medicine. The video series …

Critical Pedagogy In The Classroom: Library Instruction That Gives Voice To Students And Builds A Community Of Scholars, Michelle Reale Jan 2012

Critical Pedagogy In The Classroom: Library Instruction That Gives Voice To Students And Builds A Community Of Scholars, Michelle Reale

Library Faculty Scholarship

When librarians apply critical pedagogy in a classroom, they can both impart knowledge and ignite breakthrough thinking among students. By partnering with professors and decentralizing the power in the classroom, librarians can tap into knowledge that students already possess and encourage them to express their own ideas. This article describes the process in a 200-level literature interpretation course taught primarily to English majors at Arcadia University.

Spanning The University To Improve Information Literacy E-Instruction, Lindsay Miller, Robert Withers, Eric Resnis Jan 2012

Spanning The University To Improve Information Literacy E-Instruction, Lindsay Miller, Robert Withers, Eric Resnis

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2010

In Fall 2009, the interactive information literacy module "integrity Quickstart"(iQ) was introduced to first and second-year students at Miami University. iQ, which teaches information literacy and academic integrity concepts using the dynamic Flash-based presentation tool Prezi, is a companion to the existing eScholar, a more passive, in-depth tutorial.

iQ was created through a unique campus collaboration between the Libraries, University IT and Student Affairs. This session will recount the creation and implementation of iQ, everything from scripting and storyboarding to grant support and dealing with differences of opinion involved with any collaboration. We will discuss how iQ and eScholar work …

Granting Collaboration: Information Literacy For Faculty, Cotina Jones Jan 2012

Granting Collaboration: Information Literacy For Faculty, Cotina Jones

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2010

The initiative to form a working partnership with faculty began when the librarians in O'Kelly Library became acutely aware that our students' were not able to effectively access, evaluate and use information. After devoting years to marketing library services, teaching classes and acquiring new resources, there was little response from the faculty or students.

We asked the question, "What has to happen for us to be able to infuse information literacy into the curriculum and make it important and meaningful?"

This presentation is intended to show C. G. O'Kelly Library's efforts to embed information literacy into the curriculum by educating …

Replacing Old Bridges With New – Stepping Up Student Learning By Rebuilding The Foundation With Faculty-Librarian Collaboration, Kristen L. Motz, Dr. Helen E. Woodman Jan 2012

Replacing Old Bridges With New – Stepping Up Student Learning By Rebuilding The Foundation With Faculty-Librarian Collaboration, Kristen L. Motz, Dr. Helen E. Woodman

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2010

Your foundations are set - clear syllabus, collaborative assignments, scheduled library instructions, and excellent faculty-librarian communication - but what about demonstrated learning, updated technologies, and an infusion of instruction energy? Sometimes a librarian needs to partner with faculty to initiate a demolition and reengineering of the collaborative bridge. Our dilemma: Should we patch up an existing assignment or tackle a course reengineering? Using new girders of current learning theory, measurable learning outcomes, concept maps, just-in-time instructions, research consultations, and information literacy assessments, we rebuilt the class. Dig into the foundation with us and explore using these supports to help your …

Collaborative Project Development In The Creation Of An Interdepartmental Digitization Workflow, Valerie Prilop, R. Niccole Westbrook, Elizabeth M. German Jan 2012

Collaborative Project Development In The Creation Of An Interdepartmental Digitization Workflow, Valerie Prilop, R. Niccole Westbrook, Elizabeth M. German

Collaborative Librarianship

Creating workflows that involve the work of multiple departments within a large organization can be challenging, especially when the procedure itself is complex and involves a number of stakeholders. This paper describes and evaluates a collaborative project to develop an interdepartmental workflow for the digitization of unique library materials in a mid-sized academic library. The project includes an automated project management and materials tracking system. Project development involved three separate departments with different reporting channels. In order to navigate this difficulty and manage the large size of the project, a visual planning technique that included graphical representations of current and …

Managing Research Data : A Collaborative Approach, Darren Gibson, Julia Gross, Matthew Wyatt

Research outputs 2011

To ensure maximum benefit is achieved from the investigations in a collaborative research network, it is essential that research data is managed effectively. However, there is no set model to follow. Normally an institution will establish its own policy and procedures applicable to their researchers and data. This causes difficulties for researchers sharing data across a collaborative network. Edith Cowan University (ECU) is one of fifteen Australian universities striving to create world-class research capacity and capability through investment in the Collaborative Research Network (CRN) project. The CRN project at ECU aims to accelerate the growth of research activity from 2011 …

Creating Objectives Collaboratively: Actionable Goals Across The Library System, Jo Angela Oehrli Jan 2012

Creating Objectives Collaboratively: Actionable Goals Across The Library System, Jo Angela Oehrli

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2010

Imagine a room full of librarians and a blank, whiteboard. One librarian asks the group, "What do you want to teach students?" The librarians go beyond articulating instruction in the form of tools ("I teach the library catalog") to writing down ideas about real concepts ("I want students to be better information seekers") that students need to survive in an information-rich world.

How do you know if students learned from your instruction? How can you articulate your goals and assessments together as a library staff? The challenge of creating successful, measurable objectives across a large library system can be difficult …

Unearthing The Infrastructure: Humans And Sensors In Field-Based Scientific Research, Matthew S. Mayernik, Jillian C. Wallis, Christine L. Borgman

Christine L. Borgman

Distributed sensing systems for studying scientific phenomena are critical applications of information technologies. By embedding computational intelligence in the environment of study, sensing systems allow researchers to study phenomena at spatial and temporal scales that were previously impossible to achieve. We present an ethnographic study of field research practices among researchers in the Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS), a National Science Foundation Science & Technology Center devoted to developing wireless sensing systems for scientific and social applications. Using the concepts of boundary objects and trading zones, we trace the processes of collaborative research around sensor technology development and adoption …
