Reframing "How We Done It Good" Research Publications, Lise Doucette, Bruce Fyfe, Marni R. Harrington, Kristin Hoffmann, Courtney Waugh May 2012

Reframing "How We Done It Good" Research Publications, Lise Doucette, Bruce Fyfe, Marni R. Harrington, Kristin Hoffmann, Courtney Waugh

Kristin Hoffmann

"How I done it good" research papers, while important, often focus on a specialized local case. Added value comes from placing research results within the wider community of library research. Using citation analysis as an example, we share strategies for communicating results in a way that is replicable and comparable. (Poster presentation)

Citation Analysis Of Undergraduate Honors Theses, Ellen K. Wilson Apr 2012

Citation Analysis Of Undergraduate Honors Theses, Ellen K. Wilson

The Southeastern Librarian

Librarians often wonder what resources students use for research and whether the library provides access to these resources. At the University of South Alabama (USA), students in the honors program must complete a senior thesis in order to graduate with honors. The library holds these theses, providing a convenient source of bibliographies for examination. Studying these theses provided an unobtrusive manner of investigation. While such theses do not represent the entire undergraduate population’s research and writing behavior, they provide a starting point for addressing the above question. Non-honors program students likely encounter the same difficulties in locating and using resources …

Finding Citations To Social Work Literature: The Relative Benefits Of Using Web Of Science, Scopus, Or Google Scholar, Elaine M. Lasda Bergman

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

Past studies of citation coverage of Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar do not demonstrate a consistent pattern that can be applied to the interdisciplinary mix of resources used in social work research. To determine the utility of these tools to social work researchers, an analysis of citing references to well-known social work journals was conducted. Web of Science had the fewest citing references and almost no variety in source format. Scopus provided higher citation counts, but the pattern of coverage was similar toWeb of Science. Google Scholar provided substantially more citing references, but only …

Comparing Journal Impact Factor And H-Type Indices In Virology Journals, Zao Liu, Gary (Gang) Wan Jan 2012

Comparing Journal Impact Factor And H-Type Indices In Virology Journals, Zao Liu, Gary (Gang) Wan

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper examines the relationships between the journal impact factor and the h-type indices in virology journals. The virology journals and their 2010 journal impact factors were retrieved from Journal Citation Reports. The h-index and the g-index values of the journals for 2007-2011 were obtained from Web of Science and Google Scholar. The journals were ranked by their journal impact factor and h-indices. The correlation analysis of the measures found a strong relationship between the journal impact factor and the h-type indices, and a stronger tie between the h-indices themselves. Despite the strong correlations between the measures, differences in rankings …
