Borrow Or Buy? Cost-Effective Delivery Of Monographs, James Van Fleet, Jennifer Clarke Dec 2012

Borrow Or Buy? Cost-Effective Delivery Of Monographs, James Van Fleet, Jennifer Clarke

Jennifer Clarke

In an effort to reduce Interlibrary borrowing activity, while enhancing the Library collection, the Bertrand Library has initiated a program to purchase current monographs requested through ILL by Bucknell University students and faculty. The results have been a successful reduction in ILL workload, and a cost-effective means of document delivery as measured by average delivery time, cost-per-title, processing costs, and circulation statistics. This procedure reflects an overall change in our philosophy concerning document access and delivery, which led to the reorganization of ILL services and staff in the Bertrand Library.

Preserving The Past With Tomorrow's Technology: How Depaul University And The University Of Ireland, Galway Secured A New Home For A Vincentian Digital Collection In The Cloud, Rebecca Cooling-Mallard, M Hess

Rebecca Cooling-Mallard

DePaul University Library assisted researchers at the National University of Ireland, Galway in preserving their catalogue of Vincentian documents by migrating metadata from an unstable server to a hosted web publishing platform designed for cultural institutions. Based on the collection’s requirements and the technical abilities of the researchers and their budget, the project team chose Omeka.net. The project included simplifying and restructuring the original metadata, encoding it in Unicode, and mapping the elements to the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set. The catalogue now exists as a searchable online database in a stable, standardized, hosted environment that can be easily managed …

Using Data Profiles To Select Digital Asset Management Systems (Dams), Lisa Zilinski, S. Lorenz

Lisa Zilinski

Digital curation is no longer bound to preservation techniques that require data to be stored in a vault with only one or two authorized users [1]. Digital Asset Management Systems (DAMS) offer many efficient solutions that incorporate metadata and in so doing, DAMS help to increase access for all users. The question is: how can libraries select a DAMS that will meet the needs of their researchers, universities and funding institutions while providing sustainable digital preservation and access?

Jos Museum Arabic Manuscripts Conservation (Jmamc) Project 27-31 August 2012, Michaelle L. Biddle

Michaelle Biddle

The Jos Museum Arabic Manuscripts Collection is one of the oldest and largest manuscript collections in Nigeria. Because of the collection’s importance, its extremely poor housing and condition, the Jos Museum Arabic Manuscripts Conservation (JMAMC) Project was created. The goal of the week-long project was to gather fine-grained, detailed information as to the state of the collection so that a more comprehensive conservation, cataloging and digitization project could be formulated. Biddle details why the collection should be transferred on long-term loan to Arewa House Kaduna.

Preliminary Training For Rda: A Survey Of Cataloging Department Heads, Elyssa Sanner

Elyssa M. Sanner

This study examined the preliminary training that has occurred and will occur in the future, as well as the perceptions of cataloging department heads toward RDA (Resource Description and Access) in American academic libraries. Previous research indicates that the successful adoption of new cataloging rules relies on the strength and elements included in the training offered to and required of individuals in the library cataloging community. This study found that many of the essential components for RDA training have been included in preliminary training. Now that a decision has been made by the Library of Congress, this study identified room …

The Iowa Flood Of 2008: Putting The Disaster Response Plan To The Test, Paul A. Soderdahl

Paul A Soderdahl

In the summer of 2008, the rivers in eastern Iowa rose to historic levels, prompting a major evacuation and shutdown of the University of Iowa campus and resulting in nearly $750 million in damage, particularly to the buildings that housed the fine and performing arts. The art library reopened in late 2011, and the music library will be in temporary quarters for several more years. Though the main library received only minor flooding in the basement, the building was closed for several weeks even while campus reopened and classes resumed.

The library's data center, located in the main library, needed …
