From Two Dot To Turkey: Reaching Online Library Users Via Web Conferencing, Sheila Bonnand, Mary Anne Hansen Oct 2012

From Two Dot To Turkey: Reaching Online Library Users Via Web Conferencing, Sheila Bonnand, Mary Anne Hansen

Urban Library Journal

Librarians at Montana State University (MSU) find themselves in a dual role with respect to the idea of urban versus rural. When MSU librarians serve students at a distance, sometimes these distance clientele are in metropolitan communities much larger than MSU’s home, Bozeman. At the same time, many of their distance students are located in tiny rural towns of a couple hundred or fewer, such as Two Dot, Montana. Regardless of where they reside while taking courses, students want access to the full spectrum of the institution’s resources and services, including the library. Whether students are rural or ...

Academic Library Services To Distance Learners: In Consideration Of Costs, Technology, And Stability, Christopher Diaz Oct 2012

Academic Library Services To Distance Learners: In Consideration Of Costs, Technology, And Stability, Christopher Diaz

Urban Library Journal

In the last fifteen years, there has been an increase in the implementation of distance education programs in colleges and universities. The challenge for academic libraries will be to create working models of library support for distance learners that are both economically sustainable, and qualitatively equitable to the support given to on-campus students. The author suggests that training in advanced web computing and educational technologies must begin in the graduate study of library and information science to help offset the training costs for academic libraries. One solution might include utilizing networks of distance students to create business and other partnerships ...

Time Zones, Screencasts, And Becoming Real: Lessons Learned As A Distance Librarian, Rebecca Hedreen Oct 2012

Time Zones, Screencasts, And Becoming Real: Lessons Learned As A Distance Librarian, Rebecca Hedreen

Urban Library Journal

The library literature abounds with articles, presentations, and books on using various sorts of distance learning tools and techniques for library services. (I direct you to the excellent 5th Bibliography of Library Services for Distance Learning Resources from the Distance Learning Section of ACRL or practically any library conference proceedings for numerous examples.) Many of those resources will discuss how a particular type of tool, say, webchat, can be used for library services, with examples of successful, and sometimes unsuccessful, use in various types of libraries. I have, however, very rarely seen any discussion of when to use such tools ...

The New Distance Learners: Providing Customized Online Research Assistance To Urban Students On The Go, Melissa N. Mallon Oct 2012

The New Distance Learners: Providing Customized Online Research Assistance To Urban Students On The Go, Melissa N. Mallon

Urban Library Journal

This article provides an overview of the pedagogical theories surrounding distance learning while discussing the learning styles and characteristics of distance learners. The author describes how the use of social media and learning objects supports the pedagogical theory of connectivism. The author discusses how a mid-sized, urban university library uses social media tools, including YouTube and Twitter, to offer distance learning students the same level of research support as those studying on campus while examining other libraries that do the same. This method provides students with the opportunity to pick and choose online research support that is customized to their ...

Students As Donors To University Archives: A Study Of Student Perceptions With Recommendations, Jessica Wagner, Debbi A. Smith Oct 2012

Students As Donors To University Archives: A Study Of Student Perceptions With Recommendations, Jessica Wagner, Debbi A. Smith

Publications and Research

Most of the literature that explores the relationship between students and university archives focuses on how to integrate archival materials into the undergraduate curriculum. Little exists that analyzes student perceptions of the types of materials that are found in archives; even less discusses how to induce students to donate materials that document life on campus. This case study examines student perceptions of various aspects of university archives, with the goal of developing better methods of reaching out to encourage donation of student life materials.

Implementation As Ongoing And Incremental: Case Study Of Web 2.0 Use For Staff Communication, Wendy Chu

Publications and Research

Web 2.0 implementations in academic libraries tend to concentrate on rolling out a functioning system first and training of personnel second. This article offers a case analysis documenting one approach to implementation, whereby a website slowly integrates Web 2.0 technologies in a just-in-time orientation, and the impact on improving staff communication and cultivating community awareness for a small academic library. Findings underscore the need to reexamine the implementation process as a continuous, adaptive, and non-demanding engagement with colleagues and staff based on active awareness of developments and needs.

Twenty Years After: Armenian Research Libraries Today, D. Aram Donabedian, John Carey, Arshak Balayan

Publications and Research

Since achieving statehood in 1991, Armenia has faced major economic and political obstacles which have significantly affected the nation’s research libraries. This research paper will quantitatively and qualitatively examine the challenges facing Armenian research libraries just over twenty years after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Specifically, the authors analyze their interviews with five library administrators at five major institutions, respectively. These include Yerevan State University Library, the National Library of Armenia, the Fundamental Scientific Library of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, the Republican Scientific-Medical Library of Armenia, and the Papazian Library of the American University of ...
