To fully utilize the library and achieve its ultimate value, the construction and production of discovery has always been a central part of the library’s practice and identity. That is the reason why the new-generation (also called the next-generation discovery) discovery gets such striking effect since it came into library automation arena. However, when we talk about the new-generation of discovery in the library domain, we should see it in the entirety of the library as one of its organic parts and consider its progress along …

In this research the concept ‘gatekeeper’ is widely used to represent a class of those who are part of a knowledge management strategy; they collect information and knowledge and contextualise this before they can share it with the rest of the members of the organisation’s knowledge networks - within the formal and informal organisation. In this study, it was found that there was a strong relationship between the openness of a given firm, as regards its …

Deadly Powers: Animal Predators And The Mythic Imagination By Paul A. Trout, Lizzy A. Walker Oct 2012

Deadly Powers: Animal Predators And The Mythic Imagination By Paul A. Trout, Lizzy A. Walker

Lizzy A. Walker

Paul Trout's book on animal predators and myth is well researched and presented in such a way that it is informative and entertaining. He illustrates his assertions with numerous examples of myths from ancient cultures. The content is also meant to make the reader "uncomfortable" with the idea that humans did not start out at the top of the food chain. When applicable, Trout likens myths to some modern tales of terror where humanity must face its fear of the predator in various forms, such as in modern horror and science fiction films.

Preserving Social Media: Opening A Multi-Disciplinary Dialogue, Lisa P. Nathan, Elizabeth M. Shaffer

Elizabeth M. Shaffer

Digital artefacts generated through use of social media tools= have potential long-term value to individuals, organizations and societies. If there is a desire to systematically collect and preserve accounts of daily life, government activities, and societies’ documentary heritage, archival approaches must account for changing information systems—the tools, policies, and practices through which we engage in the contemporary information ecosystem. Through this paper we argue that in light of the growing complexity of digital information practices, particularly in relation to the use of social media, archivists need look to the scholarship of design and planning, in particular the work of human …

The Choice Is Yours! Researchers Assign Subject Metadata To Their Own Materials In Insitutional Repositories, Maira Bundza

Maira Bundza

The Digital Commons platform for institutional repositories provides a three-tiered taxonomy of academic disciplines for each item submitted to the repository. Since faculty and departmental administrators across campuses are encouraged to submit materials to the institutional repository themselves, they must also assign disciplines or subject categories for their own work. The expandable drop-down menu of about 1,000 categories is easy to use, and facilitates the growth of the institutional repository and access to the materials through the Internet.

Metatheoretical Snowmen: A Pedagogical Gedankenexperiment In Information Metatheory, Jenna Hartel

Jenna Hartel

Metatheory is the highest level conceptual device used in social scientific research and determines a way of thinking and speaking about reality and its information phenomena. Today, numerous metatheories exist in information science and create a dynamic climate. There is also widespread confusion about metatheory because it is a relatively new, abstract and elusive concept for students, practitioners and scholars alike. The article introduces metatheory in information science and its ontological, methodological, social and personal implications. Then "Metatheoretical Snowmen," a novel pedagogical strategy, is described. Metatheoretical Snowmen demystifies information metatheory through a gedankenexperiment, that is, a thought experiment. In Metatheoretical …

Academic institutions, even small colleges and universities, acknowledge the importance of archives in order to preserve and promote their institutional heritage. For the past half-century, an increasing number of institutions are establishing and supporting archives. Two over-arching questions soon arise: first, how is an academic institution, especially one with limited funding and staffing, to achieve success with their archives? Second, what can be learned through the shared experience of institutions that currently support academic archives? Faculty Views Of Open Access And Open Data Initiatives, Deborah H. Charbonneau

The National Science Foundation (NSF) now requires faculty researchers and scientists to submit a data management plan along with grant proposals. Further, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) enacted the Public Access Policy requiring peer-reviewed publications resulting from NIH funding to be submitted to PubMed Central. Yet, faculty perceptions and experiences with compliance related to these federal policies remain relatively unexplored. The aim of this study was to ascertain faculty attitudes about these policies and to also identify roles for positioning librarians as leaders on campus in supporting compliance with these initiatives, policy awareness, copyright issues, and data management practices. …
