Power And Practice In Academic Library Materials Selection Paradigms, Elena S. Smith
Power And Practice In Academic Library Materials Selection Paradigms, Elena S. Smith
School of Information Student Research Journal
This article examines the theoretical and practical implications of three methods of materials acquisitions in an academic library. First, it evaluates how traditional collection development, electronic patron driven acquisitions (PDA) and other older forms of PDA affect materials storage, preservation, purchase speed and usage. Then this paper employs Foucault’s theories about power to discuss the ramifications of these acquisitions methods for librarians and three major user groups: faculty, graduate students and undergraduates. The article concludes that each method presents different practical and theoretical advantages and disadvantages.
A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words: The Perplexing Problem Of Indexing Images, Lindsay L. Marlow, Amy Miller
A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words: The Perplexing Problem Of Indexing Images, Lindsay L. Marlow, Amy Miller
School of Information Student Research Journal
Indexing images has always been problematic due to their richness of content and innate subjectivity. Three traditional approaches to indexing images are described and analyzed. An introduction of the contemporary use of social tagging is presented along with its limitations. Traditional practices can continue to be used as a stand-alone solution, however deficiencies limit retrieval. A collaborative technique is supported by current research and a model created by the authors for its inception is explored. CONTENTdm® is used as an example to illustrate tools that can help facilitate this process. Another potential solution discussed is the expansion of algorithms used …
Health Literacy: An Overview Of An Emerging Field, Mary Grace Flaherty
Health Literacy: An Overview Of An Emerging Field, Mary Grace Flaherty
School of Information Student Research Journal
According to the National Adult Literacy Survey, nearly 90 million American adults test below a high school level for literacy skills (Kirsch, Jungeblut, Jenkins & Kolstad, 1993).Because most health materials are written at least at the high school level, this finding has major implications in terms of health care provision in this country (Helitzer, Hollis, Cotner & Oestreicher, 2009). This paper attempts to give an overview of the field of health literacy and includes: a brief background with current definitions; a description of screening and measurement tools; a discussion of aspects of limited literacy; the implications for quality health care; …

#Socialtagging: Defining Its Role In The Academic Library, Annalise Ammer, Katherine Bertel

The information environment is rapidly changing, affecting the ways in which information is organized and accessed. User needs and expectations have also changed due to the overwhelming influence of Web 2.0 tools. Conventional information systems no longer support evolving user needs. Based on current research, we explore a method that integrates the structure of controlled languages with the flexibility and adaptability of social tagging. This article discusses the current research and usage of social tagging and Web 2.0 applications within the academic library. Types of tags, the semiotics of tagging and its influence on indexing are covered.

Sitting To Participate, Timothy Smith, Evan Taylor
Sitting To Participate, Timothy Smith, Evan Taylor
iResearch: Department of Communication Studies Invitational Scholar Slam 2011-2012
Over the years of education one of the most beneficial things one could do is participate in class. Many scholars have research the causes for participation in a classroom and what affects it has on student’s grades. For our study we are looking at participation and seat location. As current students we feel that majority of the students who participate inside the classroom sit in the front of the classroom. We defined the front of the classroom as the first three rows, the back of the classroom as the last three rows, and the middle of the classroom anything between …
A Call For Change: The Evolution Of The Modern Documentary From Informative Media To Persuasive Platform, Valerie England
A Call For Change: The Evolution Of The Modern Documentary From Informative Media To Persuasive Platform, Valerie England
iResearch: Department of Communication Studies Invitational Scholar Slam 2011-2012
In the past several years, new documentaries have begun to evolve from informative media to persuasive platform as a result of changing cultural contexts and ideologies. These four films – Sicko, Food Inc., Waiting for Superman, and Inside Job effectively utilize common narratives and themes to present audiences with calls for reform in critical areas such as food safety, quality education, access to healthcare, and financial regulation. This shift reflects a transformation of the valuation of knowledge and how it serves various conflicting group interests.

The Evolution Of Note Taking: A Study On Traditional Hard Copy Methods Vs The Emerging Soft Copy Method, Jule Berkovatz, Erica De Guzman
iResearch: Department of Communication Studies Invitational Scholar Slam 2011-2012
Being that we both have grown up in the midst of the digital age, we have seen many things evolve, develop, and go electronic; including the way students choose to learn in the classroom. It seems that more and more students are choosing to take notes via laptop, tablet, or smart phone, but with that said it also appears that just as many students are choosing to stick with the more traditional pen and paper way of note taking as well. For our research, we have studied the benefits that may attract students to either note taking method, as well …
Gender Swapping In World Of Warcraft: A Look Into Personal Relationships And Gender Identity In The Gaming Environment, Jay Potter
iResearch: Department of Communication Studies Invitational Scholar Slam 2011-2012
Massively multi player online role-playing games (MMORPGs) are virtual environments that allow thousands of players to come together at one time to interact, fight monsters, and solve challenges. Role-playing in particular offers some unique benefits and opportunities that are not spared in its virtual equivalent. Gender-swapping, that is when a player chooses to play as a character that is the opposite gender of him or her is one of those benefits. This study will explore the phenomenon of gender-swapping, looking for the diverse reasons players may have to assume an identity so extremely opposite of their own. The purpose of …

Final Student Report Of The Campus Climate Focus Group Research Project, Fall 2011, Susan Murray
Faculty Publications, Sociology
The Campus Climate Focus Group Research Project was initiated at the request of the Campus Climate Committee (CCC), a Presidential advisory group composed of faculty, students, administrators, and staff. This study examines campus climate at SJSU based on data collected from thirteen focus groups composed of administrators, faculty, staff, and students. The initial impetus for this study came from findings of the 2006 Campus Climate Survey conducted by the CCC. As is common practice in social science research, this research project was designed as a “follow-up” study to offer a deeper understanding of the survey results (Morgan 1996). The primary …

The Nature Of Context-Sensitive Solutions, Stakeholder Involvement And Critical Issues In The Urban Context, Marta Panero, Jan Botha
The Nature Of Context-Sensitive Solutions, Stakeholder Involvement And Critical Issues In The Urban Context, Marta Panero, Jan Botha
Mineta Transportation Institute Publications
Over the last several decades many transportation and planning agencies have experienced conflicting demands emerging from the need to develop projects in an expeditious manner while at the same time involving stakeholders in the decision-making process, which sometimes is perceived as slowing project delivery and/or increasing costs. Given this tension between apparently conflicting demands, it is important to understand how the stakeholder involvement is being carried out and what best practices may be recommended. This study examines the issue in the context of a relatively new policy framework – Context Sensitive Solutions (CSS) – which supports the early integration of …
