New England Journal of Public Policy
Focuses on the promotion of democracy to the Middle East. Capacity of the U.S. to promote democracy in the Middle East; Discussion on the claim that spreading democracy in Iraq and Afghanistan is influenced by rhetorical flourish designed to impress American audiences; Assumption that the American brand of democracy is at a high price. From the EPIIC Symposium at Tufts University, February 2004.
Intervening In The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: A Strategy And Its Risks, David Matz
Intervening In The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: A Strategy And Its Risks, David Matz
New England Journal of Public Policy
The primary problem in reaching a peaceful arrangement between the Israelis and the Palestinians is that a significant number of people on both sides reject dividing the land between the Mediterranean and Jordan (the two-state solution), and neither local government (not the Israelis nor the Palestinians) can control their own rejectionists. As long as any "solution" assumes that the local governments will be able to confront these rejectionists, that plan will fail. The only way around this is with the use of an international coalition composed, at least, of the United States, the EU, the UN, and Arab countries. The …
Cruel Science: Cia Torture And U.S. Foreign Policy, Alfred W. Mccoy
Cruel Science: Cia Torture And U.S. Foreign Policy, Alfred W. Mccoy
New England Journal of Public Policy
The roots of the recent Abu Ghraib prisoner-abuse scandal lie in CIA torture techniques that have metastasized inside the U.S. intelligence community for the past fifty years. A contradictory U.S. foreign policy marked by both public opposition to torture and secret propagation of its practice has influenced American response to UN treaties, shaped federal anti-torture statutes, and produced a succession of domestic political scandals. After a crash research effort in the 1950s, the CIA developed a revolutionary new paradigm of psychological torture and then, for the next thirty years, disseminated it to allies worldwide. After September 11, the U.S. media …
Africa And The War On Terror, Eddy Maloka
Africa And The War On Terror, Eddy Maloka
New England Journal of Public Policy
The U.S. war on terror is now in its third year, and the bombings in Afghanistan and Iraq are far from over. Many analysts and policy thing-tanks have reflected on the impact of this war on Africa; some have put emphasis on the economy, development aid, security questions, and others on implications for U.S. foreign policy. The intention of this piece is to introduce new elements to the reflection.
We Were Allies Once: Lessons Of D Day, 1944, Nigel Hamilton
We Were Allies Once: Lessons Of D Day, 1944, Nigel Hamilton
New England Journal of Public Policy
Nigel Hamilton swivels the century around the pivot of the massive cooperation and collaboration between the United States and its allies during World War II. In the early years, European and British troops suffered a series of discouraging defeats by the Nazis, and then when the United States entered the war the great collaboration among the allies was instrumental in achieving victory in Europe. This joint effort of nations continued for a time with such institutions as the UN and NATO and other international bodies. The war in Iraq ruptured the alliance. American unilateralism has distinguished most of the debacle …

Indulge me for a few moments, will you? I write this column just as we approach the Thanksgiving. You will read it having spent the last few weeks recovering from the Christmas Holidays. It seems appropriate at this time, even conventional, to spend a few moments looking at what we all have to be thankful for, even joyous about. All too often the quotidian cares of life weigh us down unceremoniously, and we forget that we have much to be thankful for.
The Election Cycle, And The U.S. Withdrawal From Vietnam, Steven Thomas Stoddard
The Election Cycle, And The U.S. Withdrawal From Vietnam, Steven Thomas Stoddard
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Few events in American history have proved to be as divisive and controversial as U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. Although U.S. policy in Indochina has its roots in the Truman Administration, the two presidents most closely associated with the conflict are Lyndon B. Johnson, and Richard M. Nixon. These two are particularly important because they both occupied the White House during the highest levels of direct U.S. involvement in the war. In terms of troop deployments to Southeast Asia, the level and intensity of U.S. involvement peaked under the Johnson Administration and it was at this time that the …
The Challenge Of Terror: A Traveling Essay, John Paul Lederach
The Challenge Of Terror: A Traveling Essay, John Paul Lederach
Peace and Conflict Studies
So here I am, a week late arriving home, stuck between Colombia, Guatemala and Harrisonburg when our world changed. The images flash even in my sleep. The heart of America ripped. Though natural, the cry for revenge and the call for the unleashing of the first war of this century, prolonged or not, seems more connected to social and psychological processes of finding a way to release deep emotional anguish, a sense of powerlessness, and our collective loss than it does as a plan of action seeking to redress the injustice, promote change and prevent it from ever happening again. …

Mutual Wealth In Rural America, E. G. Nadeau, Elisabeth Howard
Mutual Wealth In Rural America, E. G. Nadeau, Elisabeth Howard
Center for Social Development Research
This essay contends that mutual wealth in rural America, particularly related to the use of land and other natural resources, has undergone three major paradigm shifts in the last 500 years, and may be at the threshold of a fourth. First, from the early 1500s to about 1800, European diseases and conquest destroyed the elaborate management systems for agriculture, forests, game, and other natural resources developed by North American Indians. Second, from the early 1500s to the early 1900s, European and white American settlers, induced by offers of land, repopulated the continent primarily with small and medium-sized farms and ranches. …

Agricultural Subsidies And The Doha Round: A Historic Breakthrough?, Samuel T. Ledermann
Agricultural Subsidies And The Doha Round: A Historic Breakthrough?, Samuel T. Ledermann
Geography Honors Projects
The international community witnessed a self-proclaimed 'historical breakthrough'at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in late Summer 2004 as a framework was created to eliminate all export subsidies and reduce domestic subsidies and tariffs respectively. While many hailed this step as a major victory for developing nations, others have been cautious on the 'success'of this agreement. This honor thesis evaluates the short- and long-term effects of this framework agreement on the agricultural sectors of the US, South Africa and Mali. The paper first undertakes a historical analysis of what led to this 'victory'for developing nations at the WTO. The paper then …
Repeat Migration In The United States: A Comparison Of Black, Hispanic, And White Return And Onward Migrants, Beth A. Wilson
Repeat Migration In The United States: A Comparison Of Black, Hispanic, And White Return And Onward Migrants, Beth A. Wilson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The primary objective of this study is to examine U.S. repeat migration for blacks, Hispanics, and whites. It investigates the relationships and patterns of these different racial/ethnic groups utilizing the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 (NLSY79). Repeat migration within and across categories of individual characteristics for blacks, Hispanics, and whites, is compared in order to determine if there are differences in the overall rates of repeat migration for these groups, once other factors are controlled.
To do this several statistical procedures are utilized, and the results of selected descriptive and logistic analyses are presented. The descriptive statistics control for …

The Evolution Of U.S. Foreign Policy Towards Cuba, Nicholas Drew Gordon
The Evolution Of U.S. Foreign Policy Towards Cuba, Nicholas Drew Gordon
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Cuba's location has determined the island's political, social, and economic history. No other political entity in the Western Hemisphere has been as contested as Cuba has, and no other society has passed from colonial status, to a republic, to a socialist state in less than 100 years. The largest and most western island of the Antilles archipelago, Cuba is centrally located between North and South America, and guards access to the Caribbean Sea. For hundreds of years, its strategic position and its rich soil, abundant harbors, and mineral reserves have attracted foreign powers-first Spain, then the United States, and then …

The State Of Housing For Hispanics In The United States, Carlos Vargas-Ramos
The State Of Housing For Hispanics In The United States, Carlos Vargas-Ramos
Policy Documents
The picture painted in this brief is mixed. On the one hand, Latinos lag significantly behind the aggregate of the US population in positive housing indicators and are overrepresented in the categories of negative housing indicators, and they do so for 2003 as they did in 2001, 1999 and 1997. On the other hand, over this period there has been some progress in some areas of concern; but this progress has not been necessarily consistent. This policy paper includes recommendations to improve housing for latinos.
An Examination Into The Effects Of Social Positioning And Capitalist Immersion On Gendered Attitudes Towards Homosexuality In The United States, Fiona J. Blee
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
Previous research on attitudes towards homosexuality has concentrated on characteristics of individuals, and neglected the capitalist structure of society that provides the contextual setting for the creation and maintenance of cultural attitudes.
This thesis uses responses collected in the general social survey of the United States between 1993 and 1998, to provide a more comprehensive explanation of differences in attitudes towards homosexuality, through an analysis of social position and the capitalist agenda. The analysis revealed significant relationships between sex, age, race, income, beliefs regarding the domestication of women, and attitudes towards homosexuality.
The analysis showed that respondents categorized as black …
Hiv/Aids And Condom Usage: Factors That Contribute To African American Women's Vulnerability To Hiv Infection, Monica P. Washington
Hiv/Aids And Condom Usage: Factors That Contribute To African American Women's Vulnerability To Hiv Infection, Monica P. Washington
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
HIV/AIDS poses an enormous health threat to African Americans, specifically African American women. According to the Center for Disease Control "1 in 160 African American women are believed to be infected with HIV (Center for Disease Control 1999:1). In 2000, although African American women only represented 12% of the female population, they accounted for 64% of HIV cases reported among women (The White House 2000; National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases 2004).
This study examined HIV/AIDS and African American women and attempted to answer the question: Why are African American women not consistently using condoms to protect themselves against …

The United States And Economic And Social Rights: Past, Present…And Future?, Daniel J. Whelan
Human Rights & Human Welfare
There is probably no other topic in the field of human rights that is more difficult to talk about clearly than economic and social rights. The language surrounding economic and social goods as rights claims is often muddled and confusing, lacks precision, and is difficult to grasp. What does it mean, for example, to have a right to the “highest attainable standard of mental and physical health,” for example? What is “highest”? What about “attainable standard”? What is included in “mental and physical health?” Should health care be free-of-charge? Should the state provide it? Would we have to go court …
The Importance Of Education-Occupation Matching In Migration Decisions, Michael A. Quinn, Stephen D. Rubb
The Importance Of Education-Occupation Matching In Migration Decisions, Michael A. Quinn, Stephen D. Rubb
WCBT Faculty Publications
In this article, we present and test a model that incorporates education-occupation matching into the migration decision. The literature on education-occupation matching shows that earnings are affected by how individuals' education matches that required by their occupation. Accordingly, individuals with more schooling than required by their occupation have an additional incentive to migrate: the increase in earnings that occurs with a more beneficial education-occupation match. Using data from Mexico, we found statistical support for the importance of education-occupation matching in migration decisions. Education-occupation matching provides a plausible explanation for the mixed findings in the literature on the relationship between educational …
