Citizen Participation In The Digital Age: An Evaluation Of The Potential Of A Website To Encourage Community Involvement In School Board Issues, Scott Chambers Aug 2000

Citizen Participation In The Digital Age: An Evaluation Of The Potential Of A Website To Encourage Community Involvement In School Board Issues, Scott Chambers

MPA Major Research Papers

This paper examines the potential for school board websites to engage the public by promoting a greater understanding of school board issues and accepting feedback and recommendations from the local community. An analysis of school board websites in Ontario was conducted to measure the effectiveness of existing websites as a method for communication. The findings reveal that until school boards provide an incentive for citizens to visit their websites on a regular basis, they will not become a strong way to connect to the community.

Eye Position Signal Modulates A Human Parietal Pointing Region During Memory-Guided Movements., J F Desouza, S P Dukelow, J S Gati, R S Menon, R A Andersen, T Vilis

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we examined the signal in parietal regions that were selectively activated during delayed pointing to flashed visual targets and determined whether this signal was dependent on the fixation position of the eyes. Delayed pointing activated a bilateral parietal area in the intraparietal sulcus (rIPS), rostral/anterior to areas activated by saccades. During right-hand pointing to centrally located targets, the left rIPS region showed a significant increase in activation when the eye position was rightward compared with leftward. As expected, activation in motor cortex showed no modulation when only eye position changed. During pointing to retinotopically identical …

The District Of Cochrane Social Services Administration Board: An Analysis Of The Provincial Objectives Driving Its Formation And The Organization’S Capacity To Meet These Objectives, Kathryn Miller Aug 2000

The District Of Cochrane Social Services Administration Board: An Analysis Of The Provincial Objectives Driving Its Formation And The Organization’S Capacity To Meet These Objectives, Kathryn Miller

MPA Major Research Papers

This paper examines whether the short- and long-term goals surrounding the Ontario government’s decision to create district social services administration boards have been met based on a case study of the Cochrane District Social Services Administration Board (CDSSAB). The findings reveal that the province’s short-term objectives have been met and, although many challenges persist, the CDSSAB is well positioned to meet the long-term objectives of efficiency, less government, and superior integrated services.

Evaluating The Public Participation Methods Used In Toronto’S Integrated Solid Waste Resource Management Process, John Ballantine Aug 2000

Evaluating The Public Participation Methods Used In Toronto’S Integrated Solid Waste Resource Management Process, John Ballantine

MPA Major Research Papers

This paper examines whether a meaningful public consultation process was used in the Solid Waste Management Marketplace Engagement Program (SWM-WEP) – later renamed Toronto’s Integrated Solid Waste Resource Management Process (TIRM) – based on case studies of the various meetings that took place throughout the process. The findings reveal that the public consultations that occurred in the SWM-WEP/TIRM cannot be characterized as a true dialogue because power was not transferred from bureaucrats and elected officials to the general population.

Women On Council: A Case Study Of 12 Ontario Cities, Kelly Barrowcliffe Aug 2000

Women On Council: A Case Study Of 12 Ontario Cities, Kelly Barrowcliffe

MPA Major Research Papers

This paper examines whether there is a greater proportion of women represented in urban politics than in provincial and federal legislatures. Case studies of 12 cities in Ontario were conducted and compared to data about female representation in the Canadian House of Commons. The findings reveal that women are not more represented at the local level than at other levels of government.

“What’ S Wrong With That Woman?” – Positioning Theory And Information-Seeking Behaviour, Pamela J. Mckenzie, Robert Gene Carey Jan 2000

“What’ S Wrong With That Woman?” – Positioning Theory And Information-Seeking Behaviour, Pamela J. Mckenzie, Robert Gene Carey

FIMS Presentations

Abstract We offer social positioning theory (Davies and Harre 1990) as a framework for exploring the ways in which the visibility of an individual’ s health status is linked to socially constructed subjectivities that can affect the individual’ s informationseeking behaviour. Qualitative analysis of data from two doctoral studies (collected through participant observation and 40 semi-structured interviews) illustrates the utility of social positioning theory as a framework for studying two specific health contexts: systematic lupus erythematosus, and twin pregnancy. Adopting a ‘ position’ involves the use of discursive practices which define the relations between self and others. Such practices frequently …

Adapting Violence Rehabilitation Programs For The Australian Aboriginal Offender, Peter Mals, Kevin Howells, Andrew Day, Guy Hall Jan 2000

Adapting Violence Rehabilitation Programs For The Australian Aboriginal Offender, Peter Mals, Kevin Howells, Andrew Day, Guy Hall

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

In this paper the authors address the question of how treatment and rehabilitation programs for violent offenders might be modified to more appropriately meet the needs of different cultural groups and improve treatment responsivity. The focus of the paper is on the needs of Aboriginal violent offenders in an Australian context, although the themes have relevance to treatment programs internationally. Two broad sources of information are used: the published literature relating to violent offending in Aboriginal people in Australia, and a small-scale interview-based qualitative survey of service providers with particular experience in this area. The evidence suggests there may be …

Wildlife And World Views: Australian Attitudes Toward Wildlife, Heather J. Aslin, David H. Bennett Jan 2000

Wildlife And World Views: Australian Attitudes Toward Wildlife, Heather J. Aslin, David H. Bennett

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

Research in a number of western and non-western cultures suggests there are only a limited number of basic orientations toward other species. In the broadest sense, these can be related to fundamental cultural assumptions about what the world is like - world views, world metaphors or cosmologies —and how other species are represented as a result of these assumptions.

In this paper we explore our topic in relation to two cultural traditions - those of Aboriginal Australians and Anglo-Australians. We discuss how the differing world views represented in these cultures relate to wildlife attitudes. Aboriginal society before British setdement of …

Circle As Methodology: Enacting An Aboriginal Paradigm, Fyre Jean Graveline Jan 2000

Circle As Methodology: Enacting An Aboriginal Paradigm, Fyre Jean Graveline

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

Circle as Methodology is a poetic narrative, a Trickster tale, which is descriptive of an Aboriginal method in use, while being critical of hegemonic beliefs which con􏰜 ne us. Fyre Jean seeks to engage qualitative researchers from all disciplines in an ongoing dialogue to recognize and resist the oppressive eurocentric attitudes and practices currently shaping research norms. Creatively combining Aboriginal teachings with qualitative design, the author shares insights she gleaned when researching the material for Circle works: Transforming eurocentric consciousness.

Violent Victimization And Fear Of Crime Among Canadian Aboriginals, Michael Weinrath Jan 2000

Violent Victimization And Fear Of Crime Among Canadian Aboriginals, Michael Weinrath

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

Violent victimization by offenders has led to concerns over the negative consequences that this has on victims, including a greater fear of crime. Because their disadvantaged status leads to greater rates of violent victimization, it is speculated that fear of crime will be higher among the poor and racial minorities. Examining the common violent crime of assault, this hypothesis is tested by comparing the results of two national Canadian surveys, the 1991 post-censal Aboriginal People’s Survey (N = 18,000+), and the 1993 Canadian General Social Survey (N = 10,000+). Contingency tables (cross-tabs) and multi- variate logistic regression are used to …

Overview Of Consciousness Research, Imants Barušs Jan 2000

Overview Of Consciousness Research, Imants Barušs

Psychology

The purpose of this paper is to orient the reader to the contemporary scientific study of consciousness. One of the most noticeable features of research concerning consciousness is that there are three domains of discourse, the physiological, computational and experiential, each with its own methodology, and concerns. While confusion is often expressed about what it is that one is discussing, there are four main categories of definitions of the term consciousness: consciousness is the registration, processing and acting on information; behavioural consciousness is the explicit knowledge of one's situation, mental states or actions as demonstrated by one's behaviour; subjective consciousness …

Malagasy Clause Structure, Ileana M. Paul Jan 2000

Malagasy Clause Structure, Ileana M. Paul

French Studies Publications

This thesis explores the nature of voice in Malagasy, a language spoken in Madagascar. In chapter 2, it is claimed that different passives promote arguments from different structural positions. Evidence is provided for a particular position, [Spec, v2P], where a certain class of elements (“displaced themes”) may be generated. One particular passive, the aprefix, promotes to subject elements in this position. In chapter 3, arguments are presented in favour of a structural analysis of circumstantial topic (CT). CT morphology licenses all arguments of the verb. Due to a requirement that all clauses have a subject (the Extended Projection Principle), some …
