Pride Against Prejudice: Haitians In The United States, Alex Stepick, Nancy Foner

Alex Stepick

This book describes the struggle of Haitians in the United States, the strain between pride in their Haitian roots and prejudice against Haitians, and its causes and consequences for approximately 500,000 Haitians in the U.S. The book examines the problems of prejudice, economics and immigration Haitians confront, along with their pride and resources of family, community and culture. Haitians reflect continuing difficulties in America concerning race, ethnicity and nationality. Part of the New Immigrants Series, edited by Nancy Foner. Focusing on the massive wave of immigration currently sweeping across America, this ground breaking series includes coverage of five new immigrant …

Esmonde Higgins - Politics As Intellectual Practice, Terry Irving

Terence H Irving, Dr (Terry)

This chapter traces Esmonde Higgins' struggle to define his intellectual practice from 1919 to 1954, using his private correspondence and his published writings. It divides his reflections into three parts: alienation, practice, and contradictory aspects of practice. It describes his route from Communist bureaucratic practice to having conversations 'about human interests' with workers as equals in adult education classes and informal domestic gatherings.

Programs Of Assertive Community Treatment (Pact): A Critical Review, Tomi Gomory Dec 1998

Programs Of Assertive Community Treatment (Pact): A Critical Review, Tomi Gomory

Tomi Gomory

Advocates of Programs of Assertive Community Treatment (PACT) make numerous claims for this intensive intervention program, including reduced hospitalization, overall cost, and clinical symptomatology, and increased client satisfaction, and vocational and social functioning. However, a reanalysis of the controlled experimental research finds no empirical support for any of these claims. Instead, there is evidence that the program is both coercive and potentially harmful. The current promotion of PACT appears to be based more on professional enthusiasm for the medical model than upon any benefit to the clients.

Nature Vs. Nurture: Are Leaders Born Or Made? A Behavior Genetic Investigation Of Leadership Style, Andrew Johnson, Philip Vernon, Julie Mccarthy, Mindy Molson, Julie Harris, Kerry Jang Nov 1998

Nature Vs. Nurture: Are Leaders Born Or Made? A Behavior Genetic Investigation Of Leadership Style, Andrew Johnson, Philip Vernon, Julie Mccarthy, Mindy Molson, Julie Harris, Kerry Jang

Andrew M. Johnson

With the recent resurgence in popularity of trait theories of leadership, it is timely to consider the genetic determination of the multiple factors comprising the leadership construct. Individual differences in personality traits have been found to be moderately to highly heritable, and so it follows that if there are reliable personality trait differences between leaders and non-leaders, then there may be a heritable component to these individual differences. Despite this connection between leadership and personality traits, however, there are no studies of the genetic basis of leadership using modern behavior genetic methodology. The present study proposes to address the lack …

Young Gay Men And Suicide: A Report Of A Study Exploring The Reasons Which Young Men Give For Suicide Ideation, Ronald Macdonald, Trudi Cooper Nov 1998

Young Gay Men And Suicide: A Report Of A Study Exploring The Reasons Which Young Men Give For Suicide Ideation, Ronald Macdonald, Trudi Cooper

Ronald Macdonald

This Perth study indicates that the prevalence of homophobic attitudes and the lack of support for young gay men may be important factors in the very high suicide rate among young males in Australia. The reasons some young gay men gave for their suicide attempts are outlined and other relevant literature is reviewed. This article concludes by providing youth workers with suggestions for effective suicide prevention strategies.

Do All The Resource Problems In The West Begin In The East?, Jason Shogren Nov 1998

Do All The Resource Problems In The West Begin In The East?, Jason Shogren

Jason Shogren

Economics can make good policy better and bad policy go away - a message often constrained by the political realities surrounding federal resource policy toward the West. This essay responds to these challenges to economic reasoning based on the lessons learned after a stay at the Council of Economic Advisers. My goal is to help make apolitical economists more effective advocates of efficiency.

A Multi-Media Computer Application For Undergraduate Instruction: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder As A Model, A. R. Arachy, Lisa (Miller) Zilinski, I. B. Johanson, L. M. Terry

Lisa Zilinski

The study of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can be used as a model to understand neuro-biological mechanisms of behavior. Neuropharmacological and neuroanatomical studies of children with ADHD can be used to stimulate interest in these fields incorporating both clinical and basic issues. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the use of a multi-media computer application (Hyperstudio) in the presentation of complex neurobiological material using ADHD as a clinical example. The growing availability of computers and multi-media software in educational settings can enhance lectures and increase the opportunity for interactive study by students. The purpose of this paper …

Prospects For Associative Governance: Lessons From Ontario, Canada, Neil Bradford Nov 1998

Prospects For Associative Governance: Lessons From Ontario, Canada, Neil Bradford

Neil Bradford

The writer considers the prospects for the strategic construction of associative governance in liberal politics and capitalistic economies, taking as an example Ontario, Canada, which is one of North America's leading associative democratic laboratories. He examines innovative dynamics in three discrete but interrelated fields that constituted the policy foundation of an effort undertaken between 1985 and 1995 to build a new partnership-based governance regime mandated to put in place a diversifies quality production restructuring project. The fields that he explores are occupational health and safety, labor market training, and industrial development. He points out that the outcome of Ontario's experiment …

Power Relationships In Graduate Degree Supervision, Marcus R. Wigan Nov 1998

Power Relationships In Graduate Degree Supervision, Marcus R. Wigan

Marcus R Wigan

Supervision of graduate students has been well-studied from many different angles, but the power relationships have been the subject of only a few investigations. This thesis reports on a survey of the power relationship perceptions of Victoria University graduate students and supervising staff. A US instrument (Aguinis, Nesler, Quigley, Lee & Tedeschi, 1996) was used in a modified to obtain power relationship factors based on French and Raven’s categorisation of power relationships. These Victoria university power instrument (VUPI) scales were those of Aguinis, modified for Australian intitutions. Item analysis showed that the new scales to be well behaved and to …

Ubiquitous Molecular Substrates For Associative Learning And Activity-Dependent Neuronal Facilitation., Louis D. Matzel, Andrew C. Talk, Isabel A. Muzzio, Ronald F. Rogers Nov 1998

Ubiquitous Molecular Substrates For Associative Learning And Activity-Dependent Neuronal Facilitation., Louis D. Matzel, Andrew C. Talk, Isabel A. Muzzio, Ronald F. Rogers

Ronald F. Rogers

Recent evidence suggests that many of the molecular cascades and substrates that contribute to learning-related forms of neuronal plasticity may be conserved across ostensibly disparate model systems. Notably, the facilitation of neuronal excitability and synaptic transmission that contribute to associative learning in Aplysia and Hermissenda, as well as associative LTP in hippocampal CA1 cells, all require (or are enhanced by) the convergence of a transient elevation in intracellular Ca2+ with transmitter binding to metabotropic cell-surface receptors. This temporal convergence of Ca2+ and G-protein-stimulated second-messenger cascades synergistically stimulates several classes of serine/threonine protein kinases, which in turn modulate receptor function or …

Bringing Us Together / Getting Us Out, Peter D. Verheyen Nov 1998

Bringing Us Together / Getting Us Out, Peter D. Verheyen

Peter D Verheyen

The past five years have seen an explosion in the use of the Internet by book artists both as a tool for communication and as a means of publicizing their work. Not quite as rapidly, but steadily nevertheless some formerly traditional book artists have left the confines and limitations of hot type on damp paper to explore the creation of "books" which can only exist in digital form. In this presentation, I will explore how both book artists and the book arts represent themselves using digital media and what I see as some of the implications for the ways in …

Unembedded Definite Descriptions And Relevance, Robert J. Stainton Oct 1998

Unembedded Definite Descriptions And Relevance, Robert J. Stainton

Robert J. Stainton

Definite descriptions (e.g. 'The king of France in 1997', 'The teacher of Aristotle') do not stand for particulars. Or so I will assume. The semantic alternative has seemed to be that descriptions only have meaning within sentences: i.e., that their semantic contribution is given syncategorimatically. This doesn't seem right, however, because descriptions can be used and understood outside the context of any sentence. Nor is this use simply a matter of "ellipsis." Since descriptions do not denote particulars, but seem to have a meaning in isolation, I propose that they be assigned generalized quantifiers as denotations — i.e. a kind …

Observed Choice, Estimation, And Optimism About Policy Changes, Eric Bennett Rasmusen Oct 1998

Observed Choice, Estimation, And Optimism About Policy Changes, Eric Bennett Rasmusen

Eric Bennett Rasmusen

A policy will be used more heavily in a particular time and place where its marginal cost is lower. The analyst who treats times and places as identical will overestimate the policy's net benefit, especially for policy intensities greater than exist in his sample. In regression analysis, the problem can be solved by instrumental variables and a correction for heteroskedasticity. In an example using state- level data, the technique substantially increases the estimated responsiveness of the illegitimacy rate to transfer payments.

Efficient Relocation Of Spectrum Incumbents, Peter Cramton, Evan Kwerel, John Williams Oct 1998

Efficient Relocation Of Spectrum Incumbents, Peter Cramton, Evan Kwerel, John Williams

Peter Cramton

Changes in technologies and in consumer demands have made prior radio spectrum allocations far from efficient. To address this problem the FCC has recently reallocated spectrum for more flexible use in bands that are partially occupied by incumbent license holders. Often, it is necessary for the new license holder to relocate incumbents to make efficient use of the spectrum. Regulations structuring the negotiation between incumbent and new entrant can promote efficiency. In particular, giving the new entrant the right to move the incumbent with compensation can reduce negotiation costs and promote efficiency when there is private information about spectrum values …
