Productivity Measurement In The Presence Of "Poorly Priced" Goods, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, Richard K. Perrin Dec 1996

Productivity Measurement In The Presence Of "Poorly Priced" Goods, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, Richard K. Perrin

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Young (1995) estimated Total Factor Productivity (TFP) growth for Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea. He reported moderate growth rates for these four regions. This means that rapid growth of GDP in these four economies is due mainly to fast increase of inputs. Young (2000) also estimated the TFP growth rate of China to be 1.4% per year during the period of 1978 to 1998. Similar to his claim for the four 'Asian Tigers', he concluded that 'the productivity performance of the non-agricultural economy (of China) during the reform period is respectable, but not outstanding.' China's real GDP grew …

Review Of Losing Asia: Modernization And The Culture Of Development, By Brett Wallach., Robert Stoddard Oct 1996

Review Of Losing Asia: Modernization And The Culture Of Development, By Brett Wallach., Robert Stoddard

Department of Geography: Faculty Publications

When I first visited Kathmandu in the mid-1950s, the shops sold mostly local and Indian products, many of the shoppers wore Newari dress, and motor vehicles were uncommon. In the evening, one could leisurely stroll the quiet streets and gaze at temple tops silhouetted against a starlit sky. A couple of decades later, after the drug culture and other foreign interests had invaded and infected the capital city, a nighttime stroller encountered some of the same dangers on the street that occur in American cities at night. Upon my return to Kathmandu last winter, I observed retail stores, citizens' dress, …

Review Of Archaeology And Geographical Information Systems: A European Perspective, Luann Wandsnider Oct 1996

Review Of Archaeology And Geographical Information Systems: A European Perspective, Luann Wandsnider

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Although but six years old, our library copy of Interpreting Space: GIS and Archaeology (1990; edited by Allen, Stanton, and Zubrow) is tattered and in need of rebinding. Such has been the interest in this volume and its subject, the adaptation of Geographic Information System (GIs) technology to archaeological needs. Archaeology and Geographical information Systems complements Interpreting Space in several ways. Where the latter features mostly North American authors, European authors are the main contributors to the former. An4 in an effort to educate readers, the first offers brief reviews of hardware, software, and GIS concepts; such items are mentioned …

The Challenge Of Waste Stewardship And Sustainable Development: A Study Of Municipal Waste Management In Rural Manitoba, C. Emdad Haque, Karen T. Hamberg Oct 1996

The Challenge Of Waste Stewardship And Sustainable Development: A Study Of Municipal Waste Management In Rural Manitoba, C. Emdad Haque, Karen T. Hamberg

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

Despite the recent enactment of federal and provincial reduction targets, the majority of government and private sector research has focused primarily on household recycling strategies while little attention was given to other dimensions critical to the achievement of sustainable waste management. Although distinct problems may exist in rural jurisdictions, the literature continues to address the problems inherent in the management of wastes in urban centers rather than rural communities. The aim of this research was to close this gap by examining the issue of municipal waste management in rural Manitoba. Special emphasis was placed upon: (1) the amount and type …

Review Of Conservation Of Great Plains Ecosystems: Current Science, Future Options, Edited By S. R. Johnson And Aziz Bouzaher, David J. Wishart Oct 1996

Review Of Conservation Of Great Plains Ecosystems: Current Science, Future Options, Edited By S. R. Johnson And Aziz Bouzaher, David J. Wishart

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

This book stems from a symposium entitled "Conservation of Great Plains Ecosystems: Current Science, Future Options" held in Kansas City in April of 1993, the purpose of which was to forge a "Great Plains regional environmental initiative." The editors explain what this means in an introduction that also summarizes the book's contents and offers recommendations: only with integrated community-based management of identifiable ecosystems, they argue, can the Great Plains avoid further severe ecological distress. The most highly touted word in the volume is "sustainability," the most castigated, "monoculture." And who could disagree with that?

Conservation of Great Plains Ecosystems is …

Review Of Guide To Rural Data By Priscilla Salant And Anita J. Waller, Cornelia Butler Flora Oct 1996

Review Of Guide To Rural Data By Priscilla Salant And Anita J. Waller, Cornelia Butler Flora

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

With increased devolution of responsibility to rural places, reliable, timely, and meaningful data take on added importance for local governments and local nonprofit organizations. Pressures for data on which to base allocations of resources and to assess the impact of those allocations are further intensified by the rapid changes occurring in rural America. This short book provides those who need to know what is happening locally with an overview of what data are available, what they mean, and their limitations.

Review Of Decision At Midnight: Inside The Canada-Us Free-Trade Negotiations By Michael Hart With Bill Dymond And Colin Robertson, Christopher D. Merrett

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

The issue of free trade has fueled political debate in North America for the past decade. The authors, members of the Canadian free trade negotiating team, provide an inside view and defense of the Canada-US. Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Their three-part story begins with ail outline of the economic theory and macroeconomic reality that prompted Canada and the United States to consider free trade. It also reveals the political skirmishes in Canada and the US. that set the stage for FTA negotiations. Section two delineates the actual free trade negotiations, key negotiators, and issues. The authors describe how philosophical differences …

Review Of Rethinking Restructuring: Gender And Change In Canada Edited By Isabella Bakker, Barbara L. Marshall Oct 1996

Review Of Rethinking Restructuring: Gender And Change In Canada Edited By Isabella Bakker, Barbara L. Marshall

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

Any observer of the recent politics and economics of Western democratic states will be familiar with the starting point of this collection: that there has been a significant shift in governing practices related to global economic restructuring, informed by a "neo-liberal consensus" that favors shrinking government and deregulating economies. This book tackles the implications of this trend in Canada, but with the specific aim of demonstrating the simultaneous "gender erosion and intensification" integral to restructuring. Isabella Bakker has assembled some of Canada's finest feminist scholars to explore the often contradictory effects of current political-economic strategies on the Canadian (and global) …

Review Of Planting The Future: Developing An Agriculture That Sustains Land And Community Edited By Elizabeth A. R. Bird, Gordon L. Bultena, And John C. Gardner, Charles A. Francis

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

Why should you care about agriculture? Planting the Future provides an eloquent description of the current state of this' most basic human endeavor so critical to survival. Based on a series of surveys and on-farm studies in the North Central and Western states, the book recognizes the bounty of our conventional agricultural industry. More importantly for the future, it details a series of critical problems in the environment, the distribution of economic benefits, and the social dislocation resulting from the consolidation of lands and heavy reliance on fossil fuels. Today's productivity and cheap food in the market have hidden expenses …

Review Of An Illustrated Guide To Endangered Or Threatened Species In Kansas By Joseph T. Collins, Suzanne L. Collins, Jerry Horak, Dan Mulhern, William Busby, Craig C. Freeman, And Gary Wallace, Michael A. Mares Oct 1996

Mares

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

This is a handsome little volume offering information on the status and biology of all of the sixty species of Kansas plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates listed by the state or by federal statutes as threatened or endangered. The book begins with a one-page introduction stating the authors' goal of producing a single volume to provide ready access to information on all legally designated protected species in Kansas. In this the authors are successful. The introduction is followed by a brief history of how a species comes to be considered either threatened or endangered, as well as a complete list of …

Underinsurance: The Hidden Dimension To The Health Care Crisis, John Comer, Keith Mueller, Joseph Blankenau Oct 1996

Underinsurance: The Hidden Dimension To The Health Care Crisis, John Comer, Keith Mueller, Joseph Blankenau

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

The paper examines the issue of underinsurance. It discusses how the concept can be measured and employs the measure in assessing the number of underinsured in the State of Nebraska. The paper examines the social and economic characteristics of the uninsured, both an at-risk group defined by low income and a group with higher income, and compares each to a corresponding set who are not underinsured. The paper reports a multivariate analysis of factors related to underinsurance and compares the above categories with respect to health status and access to health care.

South Dakota Gaming: A Regional Analysis, Erin Hogan Fouberg Oct 1996

South Dakota Gaming: A Regional Analysis, Erin Hogan Fouberg

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

The referendum and initiative processes were used six times between 1982 and 1994 to address the issue of gaming in South Dakota. Four of the six votes resulted in pro-gaming outcomes. This study examines how and why voters in the state 50 sixty-six counties varied geographically in their levels of gaming support over time. Five different ways of regionalizing the state are advanced as possible explanations, and then analyzed using maps, analysis of variance tests, and eta correlation coefficients. The popular East River-West River cultural-political divide is found to serve as the best explanation of the geographical distribution of gaming …

Occupational Segmentation In Kansas And Nebraska, 1890-1900, Lisa M. Frehill Oct 1996

Occupational Segmentation In Kansas And Nebraska, 1890-1900, Lisa M. Frehill

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

Population growth in the states of Kansas and Nebraska between 1870-1900 was largely due to the influx of migrants from other parts of the United States and from Europe in search of fertile land to own and till. However, not all migrants were equally successful in attaining this goal. This paper discusses differences in occupational positions of African-American, Native-Born White and Foreign-Born White migrants in Kansas and Nebraska. Evidence from the US. censuses from 1890 and 1900 indicates that African Americans occupied positions of relative disadvantage in the occupational structures of Nebraska and Kansas, being more likely to be relegated …

Populist Entrepreneur: Douglas Bruce And The Tax And Government Limitation Moment In Colorado, 1986-1992, Daniel A. Smith Oct 1996

Populist Entrepreneur: Douglas Bruce And The Tax And Government Limitation Moment In Colorado, 1986-1992, Daniel A. Smith

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

In 1992, Douglas Bruce, a non-practicing lawyer and landlord from Colorado Springs, Colorado, successfully "mobilized" popular support for Amendment 1, a ballot initiative that has restricted the taxing and spending powers of state and local governments in Colorado. For most Coloradans, "Douglas Bruce" is now a household name. Using a historical perspective to examine the role Bruce played in advancing Amendment 1, this study offers the analytic concepts of faux populism, populist entrepreneurs, and the public mood. Faux populism is the transposition of an ill-defined, but tangible public mood into a ready-made ballot initiative that is offered to the people …

Review Of Nebraskaland Magazine's Weather And Climate Of Nebraska, Lincoln: Nebraska Game And Parks Commission, 1996, Pamela Naber Knox Oct 1996

Review Of Nebraskaland Magazine's Weather And Climate Of Nebraska, Lincoln: Nebraska Game And Parks Commission, 1996, Pamela Naber Knox

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

Weather and Climate of Nebraska is a colorful new atlas describing the seasonal variations of weather in the central High Plains. Published as the January-February 1996 issue of NEBRASKAland magazine, it can also stand alone as a general reference text. The title's layout emphasizes "Weather" over "Climate," a theme that pervades much of the atlas.

The publication contains seven major chapters plus introduction, almanac, glossary, and index. Following the Introduction, which sets the stage in Nebraska, Chapter One describes the reasons for the seasons and how seasonal variations affect the state. Chapters Two through Five highlight weather and climate features …

Review Of Editing Early And Historical Atlases Edited By Joan Winearls, Theodore Binnema Oct 1996

Review Of Editing Early And Historical Atlases Edited By Joan Winearls, Theodore Binnema

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

Researchers have only slowly recognized the possibilities and pitfalls of using maps as cultural artifacts. Only recently have historians of cartography shown that embedded in every map is valuable information about the cartographer and the society that produced it. Still, there is almost no literature on how editol's have influenced the shape of early and historical atlases. Editing Early and Historical Atlases is intended to scrutinize this lacuna. In their approach, however, most of its articles use the lenses of traditional historiography.

The four articles in the first section-by James Akerman, Walter Goffart, Mary Pedley, and Anne Godlewska-provide a historiography …

Review Of The Limits Of Agrarian Radicalism: Western Populism And American Politics By Peter H. Argersinger, Scott G. Mcnall Oct 1996

Review Of The Limits Of Agrarian Radicalism: Western Populism And American Politics By Peter H. Argersinger, Scott G. Mcnall

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

Peter Argersinger is one of the best known and influential writers on American Populism. His clear, well-crafted pieces on the origins and eventual demise of the Populist movement are outstanding in their ability to help contemporary readers understand the turmoil and complexity of late nineteenth- century American politics. Those familiar with his writing will find The Limits of Agrarian Radicalism a compilation of previous work spanning a quarter century of scholarly effort with an entirely new chapter as a bonus. My personal favorite, "Road to a Republican Waterloo," explains why a third party farmer's movement triumphed over a well-entrenched Republican …

Review Of Amerindian Rebirth: Reincarnation Belief Among North American Indians And Inuit Edited By Antonia Mills And Richard Slobodin, Jennifer S. H. Brown Oct 1996

Review Of Amerindian Rebirth: Reincarnation Belief Among North American Indians And Inuit Edited By Antonia Mills And Richard Slobodin, Jennifer S. H. Brown

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

Amerindian Rebirth is both a major collection of essays and probably the best current reference work on Native North American beliefs about reincarnation. Of its sixteen articles, four are previously published; two of them (Slobodin's and Ian Stevenson's), however, include authors' afterthoughts updating their ideas on their research. A substantive foreword by Gananath Obeyesekere, moreover, provides perspectives on reincarnation from the study of Indic religions. The book includes an appendix offering a trait index to North American Indian and Inuit reincarnation sources, compiled in a twenty-one page chart. Since the essays themselves focus mainly on the arctic, western subarctic, and …

Self-Study Report: 03 Introduction, Program Goals, Rationale

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Materials and History

The Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication (AgLEC) was established in July 1992, merging the Departments of Agricultural Education and Agricultural Communications. In the past, Agricultural Education had focused on undergraduate preparation of secondary teachers in vocational agricultural education and on offering a graduate masters degree in the same area for teachers in the field. When the technical services of Agricultural Communications were consolidated in a new non-teaching unit (now named Communications and Information Technology), the academic component of the unit remained as the Department of Agricultural Communications. The department offered courses in technical writing and agricultural journalism, but …

Self-Study Report: 05 Undergraduate Academic Programs

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Materials and History

Four years ago the Departments of Agricultural Communications and Agricultural Education were merged into one unit. The resultant Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communication (AgLEC) has provided considerable opportunities for growth and development.

The collaborative efforts of the faculty are readily identified in the expanded offerings for students in both the teaching and non-teaching options of the agricultural education major and in the agricultural journalism major, as well as for students from other majors opting for various AgLEC courses. New offerings in human resources development and technical communication have been developed; major changes in the agricultural education program are …

Self-Study Report: 06 Graduate Academic Programs

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Materials and History

Merging the departments of Agricultural Communications and Agricultural Education provided fresh perspectives on graduate education. While Agricultural Communications had no graduate program, Agricultural Education traditionally offered one graduate program at the masters level largely designed for agricultural educators in Nebraska’s public schools. During the last five years, the program of study leading to the Master of Science degree in Agricultural Education has begun to reflect the changing nature of our clientele, their needs, and new directions.

Candidates for the master of science degree now include greater numbers of those with interests in human resources development who are pursuing careers in …

Self-Study Report: 07 Research And Scholarly Activity

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Materials and History

The Department of AgLEC is committed to a strong program of research and scholarly activity, which is complementary to its programs of teaching and outreach. In recognition of this programmatic initiative, as a part of the 1995•1999 strategic planning process, the department created and empowered a separate faculty committee to be exclusively concerned with research and scholarly activity. The Research & Scholarly Activity (R&SA) Committee (which consists of both departmental faculty and members external to the department) assumed duties previously included in the mandates of the departmental Graduate Committee. This action reflected special faculty concern regarding the status of research …

Self-Study Report: 08 Distance Eduation

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Materials and History

The Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources' (IANR) 1995 Strategic Plan identifies “implementation of distance education” as one of its three overarching objectives as the university moves into the 21st century. In addition, the Nebraska Network 21 vision statement recognizes distance education as an integral part of Nebraska's future as we develop educational strategies to address learners' needs, both formally in the classroom, as well as informally in the community or the workplace.

The citizens the University of Nebraska serves are requesting that postsecondary education be more responsive to their lifelong learning needs at a price they can afford - …

We anticipate the changes during the next decade which will impact Nebraska food, agricultural and agribusiness industries, the management of natural resources and the quality of life opportunities for our people are expected to exceed those that occurred during the past 50 years. To ensure the programs of the University of Nebraska Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) remain responsive and effective in the future, it is urgent for as to assess our program priorities and operational procedures to strengthen Nebraska’s agricultural and natural resources system. While doing so, we must also prepare students and clientele to make the …
