Women And The American Legal System: All Men Are Created Equal, Jennifer L. Emma Apr 1994

Women And The American Legal System: All Men Are Created Equal, Jennifer L. Emma

Honors Theses

In the melting pot of American society, the concept of law cannot be underestimated. American society is based upon racial, ethnic, and religious diversity, all converged under one legal system. The premise of the American legal system is that everyone, regardless of their status in society, is held accountable under the same laws of the land. Since everyone is represented in the law, it is their civic duty to abide by these laws. The basis of a constitutional society is law; it replaced the old monarchy systems of Europe with one of equality. In the United States of the 1990's, …

Most often that means influencing legislators who control public funding and business leaders who make up the bulk of private funding. Advocacy takes place at the grass roots level with community canvassing …

Leadership : Can It Be Taught?, Edward R. Schreiber Iii Apr 1994

Leadership : Can It Be Taught?, Edward R. Schreiber Iii

Honors Theses

This paper attempts to support the assertion that leadership can be taught. To accomplish this task I must first determine what leadership is. To assert that something can be taught I must first ascertain what the subject is. This is an issue of particular sensitivity and complexity, and will be discussed in length in this paper. From there I will attack the question of whether this thing called leadership can be taught. How can an educational curriculum actually teach people leadership? This question is actually the culmination of a number of underlying issues which must first be confronted.

At this time, Reynolds was under the leadership of a new CEO, Dick Holder, who had been in his position for around a year or two. Implementing Total Quality Management In The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Jennifer H. Weiskopf Jan 1994

Implementing Total Quality Management In The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Jennifer H. Weiskopf

Honors Theses

State government is in need of change. For the most part, there is a lack of coordination and communication from the top-down, bottom-up, between agencies, and within organizations. On the one hand, this can be attributed to the inefficiency of the public sector in general because it is one in which politics impacts every aspect of the government, but on the other hand, the culture of the public sector can be attributed to the leadership that is responsible for shaping this sector of society. The layers of bureaucracy and unnecessary procedures seem to frustrate everyone, but very few proactive steps …

The Politics Of Privatization In Egypt, Michelle Tadros

Honors Theses

This is a study on the politics of privatization in Egypt Privatization is a current topic of interest because several countries in Latin America and in the Far 'East have successfully privati2ed their economies and entered into the world market system. This may have implications on the future competition industrialized nations face from the growing economies of the developing world. Moreover. the political and structural obstacles that LDCs face in attempting to liberalize their economies could lead to drastic changes in the political arrangements of these nations. For example, the turmoil in the Mexican government which has been in the …

Leap Up! For Children: A Church Based Education Program, Cheryl Hubbard Jan 1994

Leap Up! For Children: A Church Based Education Program, Cheryl Hubbard

Honors Theses

It is important to create an accepting environment for children to begin to appreciate faith in God. Adults need to recognize that even though children may not be able to talk about God, they do have an ability to think about and appreciate God (Lester 174). Because children have an active imagination and are just beginning to develop some logic skills, this is an easy segue for a child to understand many of the stories and parables that adults may discount. When children ask questions, it is important to get them to think through the issue and to provide some …

Teaching Leadership For A Diverse Society, Brooke Douglas Taylor Jan 1994

Teaching Leadership For A Diverse Society, Brooke Douglas Taylor

Honors Theses

According to Workforce 2000, a survey report on corporate responses to demographic and labor force trends, traditional minorities (defined as people of color, immigrants, and women) will compose up to 80 percent of the United States corporate workforce by the year 2000. This displays a significant change from earlier years, where the workforce was dominated by white American males. Because of this changing ethnic and racial mix of employees, companies are becoming more concerned with ethnic diversity and the changing needs of both individuals and companies. Though these companies are concerned, not much has been done to address the growing …

The William Byrd Community House : Developing Youngsters Into Future Leaders, William Gill, Tanya M. Tyree Jan 1994

The William Byrd Community House : Developing Youngsters Into Future Leaders, William Gill, Tanya M. Tyree

Honors Theses

Youth face several issues including neglect, abuse, poverty, crime, teenage pregnancy, drugs, and mental disorders among many others. All of these problems result in a greater lack of self esteem for those children involved. Who is responsible? In reality, it is a combination of factors. To make a difference, we researched the leadership opportunities of elementary aged students in the community, and little was found. In hopes of facilitating change we chose one of these areas, the community, to focus on and began to pioneer our own leadership program at the William Byrd Community House.

Public Policy Issues, Aaron J. Heffron Jan 1994

Public Policy Issues, Aaron J. Heffron

Honors Theses

The following pages are a collection of three case studies assembled with the intent to facilitate discussion about key leadership issues related to the public policy realm. Critics of leadership studies have often posted to the theoretical nature o the discipline to criticize the worth. One method to teach leadership is the utilization of case studies, or "real world" examples. If your position is that leadership can only be taught through practical experience, these case studies should present an interesting exercise. They seek to inculcate the idealistic world of theoretical studies with doses of realistic situations.

For these case studies …

Ukrop's Supermarkets is a chain of twenty-two grocery stores throughout the Richmond area. They are known to be extremely customer service oriented to the point that if you ask a store employee where an item is you will be taken to it, not told where it might be found. In addition, you never bag your own groceries or even have to take them out to your car. Their employees do everything for you. The stores are very family oriented; as a result, they do not sell alcoholic beverages as is customary for supermarkets in Virginia, and they are not open …

Communication In Leadership, George C. Ruotolo Jan 1994

Communication In Leadership, George C. Ruotolo

Honors Theses

Through my leadership studies I have found that the one common link between virtually all great leaders has been the comprehension and mastery of the art of communication. From those who were powerful and influential orators, to those who lead through the written word, to others who found alternate means such as non-verbal (i.e .. setting examples) methods, each recognized and utilized the process and importance of communication. It was this finding that has lead me to believe that at the Jepson School of Leadership Studies we should teach about communication and its role in the leadership process.

Hence, I …

The Children Are Singing. Can You Hear Them?, Kristen Leigh Netsel

Everyday, millions of people worldwide awake to silence. They don't hear the sounds of mom making breakfast and coffee being made. They don't hear the sound of the neighbors' dog barking as the paper boy rides by on his bike. They aren't awaken by the steady shrill of the alarm clock. These people are deaf and they can barely hear the sound of their own voices, if at all. This is a world inhabited by 14 million Americans but remains unfamiliar to the rest of the population and there is little interaction between their world and ours. In fact, little …

How Graduate Schools Percieve A Leadership Major, Rachael Enoch Jan 1994

How Graduate Schools Percieve A Leadership Major, Rachael Enoch

Honors Theses

We wanted our project to make a difference in two areas. First we hoped that our project would help the Jepson School and its students understand more about leadership in the "real world", about how leadership and leadership studies are perceived, and about potential educational and career options for leadership studies majors. We wanted to help answer the question that everyone wants to know: What a Bachelor of Arts in Leadership Studies means to graduate schools and employers? Second, we wanted our project to advance the field of leadership education and leadership studies. We thought that the data we collected …

Prince Edward County: 1951-1963 : An Oral History, W. Glenn Merten

Honors Theses

The Civil Rights movement is a field ripe for the study of leadership. In it, and many other social movements, there are evident many of the facets which we touch upon in the Jepson School. The contexts of formal organizations, many political systems, and countless community organizations can be seen in the Civil Rights movement. The fields of ethics and leading groups are also evident, and knowledge critical thinking and the theories of leadership are essential in any leadership circumstance. It would also be helpful if leaders in the Civil Rights movement were skilled in conflict resolution, motivation, leading individuals, …

Data Office Supply : A Study Of Leadership In Family Business, Justin Andress Jan 1994

Data Office Supply : A Study Of Leadership In Family Business, Justin Andress

Honors Theses

While a proportion of family businesses are often the small operations that consist of an individual or couple, operating a relatively small store, one would be surprised as to the enormous diversity of the different types of family businesses. A family business can range from a small endeavor operated out of the home, to enormous companies such as the family-operated Wrigley Company (chewing gum) which boasts annual sales of over half of a billion dollars.
