Freedom Of Commerce: The History And Archaeology Of Trade At St. Castin’S Habitation 1670-1701, Brooke Ann Manross
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Settled on the often disputed border of New England and Acadia during the last quarter of the 17th century, the Baron Jean Vincent de l’Abbadie de St. Castin operated a trading post at the confluence of the Penobscot and Bagaduce Rivers near the modem town of Castin, Maine. Castin was an entrepreneur who traded with the Abenaki Indians of Acadia and Maine for peltry. Although he was French, Castin exchanged this peltry with Massachusetts merchants in order to get the European trade items necessary to supply his Abenaki clientele. Castin preferred trade to warfare, nevertheless, he was often embroiled in …

The Cultural Construction Of The Maine Sporting Camps, March O. Mccubrey
The Cultural Construction Of The Maine Sporting Camps, March O. Mccubrey
Maine History
Maine’s lakes and forests attracted a growing number of urban hunters and anglers after 1880. Attracted in part by the informality and remoteness of the Maine woods, these urban recreationists nevertheless imposed their own sense of order and propriety upon the culture of the sporting camp. Urban “sports “ went “back to nature, ” yet maintained their status - and their social distance - as ladies and gentlemen. ”
A Cage For John Sawyer The Poor Of Otisfield, Maine, Jean F. Hankins
A Cage For John Sawyer The Poor Of Otisfield, Maine, Jean F. Hankins
Maine History
Each year from 1790 to the end of the Civil War the town’s people of Otisfield wrestled with the dilemma of town relief. Examining this issue from two perspectives - the town taxpayers and the town poor - Jean Hankins sheds light on the politics, the finances, the hardships, the family life, and the burdens of responsibility in Maine's nineteenth-century small towns.

B840: Firm Formation, Firm Failure, And Competitiveness: An Overview Of Maine's Entrepreneurial Economy, Dennis A. Watkins, Thomas G. Allen
Bulletins
The purpose of this paper is to establish a basic understanding of Maine's entrepreneurial economy. The competitiveness of Maine's small businesses, reflected in rates of firm formation and firm failure, is important to future economic growth and policy development. Previous research has pointed to the high proportion of small businesses operating in Maine, but questions concerning their entrepreneurial dynamism remain unanswered. Developing a useful policy response for future economic growth dictates that the following questions be fully explored: (1) What is the current state of Maine's entrepreneurial base and how does this base compare with other states in the New …

Beaver, Blankets, Liquor, And Politics Pemaquid’S Fur Trade, 1614-1760, Neill Depaoli
Maine History
The trading posts at Pemaquid typified the transactions, administrative phases, and cross-cultural contacts that made up the New England fur trade in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Using archaeological and documentary evidence, Neill DePaoli explores this important yet volatile industry through several stages, including early informal transactions, a merchant entrepreneurial phase, provincial supervision, and illegal exchanges during the closing years of the fort's significance.
The Political Economy Of Nafta: The Global Crisis And Mexico, Melvin Burke
The Political Economy Of Nafta: The Global Crisis And Mexico, Melvin Burke
School of Economics Faculty Scholarship
The proposed North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)1 between Canada, the United States of America and Mexico is a logical and perhaps inevitable extensions of the 1989 Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Canada and the U.S.A. Both agreements are controversial and massive public opposition to them exists in all three countries2 for good reasons, as we shall see. The citizens of these three democracies have never been provided with a credible explanation of the need for agreement.
