Wisconsin Railroad Planning: A State's Perspective Of Abandonments, Barbara Busse Dec 1975

Wisconsin Railroad Planning: A State's Perspective Of Abandonments, Barbara Busse

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Federal legislation enacted in January 1974 created federal agencies to produce a rail plan process for the Northeast United States and to monitor and evaluate the programs. A a result of the federal enactment, many states are producing rail plans. Wisconsin is presently preparing one such plan which included the elements of freight operations. The State also has produced a Manual for State Railroad Planning. Both documents have included railroad abandonment as topic of discussion. The present planning process in the State is not sufficient to determine future courses of action concerning abandonments. A case study is presented to determine …

Effects Of State And Federal Aid To Education, Taxes And Other Socio-Economic Factors On Certain Housing Values In Nebraska, Wallace W. Decatur

Student Work

There have been many studies, papers, articles, and theories which attempt to explain the effect of taxation on real estate values. Occasionally, someone will attempt to correlate some new, here-to-fore unrelated, factor to real estate values. The new factors are often utilized alone or in conjunction with previous study.

The Effect Of Straw On The Behaviour Of Sows In Tether Stalls, D. Fraser Aug 1975

The Effect Of Straw On The Behaviour Of Sows In Tether Stalls, D. Fraser

Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection

The behaviour of sows in tether stalls with and without straw was studied in two experiments. Sows lay down more when 1 kg of straw was provided daily, especially when it was chopped and mixed wet with the food (dietary effect). Sows without straw performed a variety of stereotyped oral and other activities which were greatly reduced by the provision of loose straw that could be chewed and manipulated throughout the day (recreational effect). Sows were frequently seen standing or sitting motionless with the head drooping, probably in a state of drowsiness. This behaviour was virtually eliminated by full straw …

An Application Of The Income Elasticity Concept To The Demand For Housing, Loyce Bagwell May 1975

An Application Of The Income Elasticity Concept To The Demand For Housing, Loyce Bagwell

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Many studies approach the housing-income relationship by calculating the income elasticity of demand for housing. This study employs this approach in order to (1) test the implications of the permanent income hypothesis by using data which provide both biased and unbiased elasticity coefficients and (2) test the effects which the explanatory variable, family composition, may have on the elasticity coefficients.

The methodology involves regressing the log of housing expenditure on the log of disposable income for seven different family compositions in order to obtain the income elasticity coefficients. This approach is applied to data (cross section 1960-61 BLS consumer surveys) …

A Statistical & Cartographic Analysis Of The Size-Distribution Of Retail Grocery Stores In Bowling Green, Kentucky, Luke Hall May 1975

A Statistical & Cartographic Analysis Of The Size-Distribution Of Retail Grocery Stores In Bowling Green, Kentucky, Luke Hall

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to investigate the spatial distribution of retail grocery stores in Bowling Green, Kentucky using the formal element of store size as a controlling theme. This purpose was behaviorally accomplished through a cartographic analysis of the city wide arrangement and a statistical analysis measuring the degree and intensity of selected variables. A survey of pertinent literature was undertaken to discover locational trends and to uncover sixteen specific variables suggested to provide association with grocery store distribution. One general and six specific hypotheses were presented! all were rejected. The cartographic displays did, however, yield promising similarities …

Pesticide Regulation And The Farm Worker, R. Craig Loveless Apr 1975

Pesticide Regulation And The Farm Worker, R. Craig Loveless

IUSTITIA

It has long been recognized that many pesticide products offer a potential hazard, which if unregulated, may result in injury or death. The development of highly toxic pesticides during the last decade has created a need for stricter regulation of pesticide use in the agricultural community. Specifically, the farm worker of today is in need of legislative protection from exposure to deadly chemical agents now being used to control pests and disease in the fields and orchards. Regulating the handling and use of these dangerous pesticides is but one way to protect the farmer, the farm worker, and the environment. …

"When he was campaigning for election to the presidency of this country, Abraham Lincoln made a rash promise. Detailing his ideas on giving freedom to black slaves to an unsympathetic audience, Lincoln was confronted by a white heckler from the rear who shouted, "Yes, but what are you going to do for me?"

Social Stress And Welfare Problems In Agricultural Animals, D. G. M. Wood-Gush, I. J. H. Duncan, D. Fraser Jan 1975

Social Stress And Welfare Problems In Agricultural Animals, D. G. M. Wood-Gush, I. J. H. Duncan, D. Fraser

Farm Animal Welfare Collection

Disruptions of an animal's social behaviour can, in some respects at least, mimic the effects of such classical stressors as infection and exposure to low temperatures. For example, Barnett (1958) found enlarged adrenals among wild rats which were subjected to attack by other rats in the laboratory. However, the experience of being attacked was not necessary for this physiological response, as the aggressors showed much the same changes as the victims. In fact Archer (1969) reported heightened adrenocortical activity among individually caged mice simply as a result of their being housed next to other mice, without actual physical contact. If …
