Chemicals play significant roles in agriculture today. In the United States they contribute to the immense capability of farmers to produce food and fiber. They are viewed as promising steps in economic development in parts of the world where population grows faster than food production.

Internally, Iow a has undergone a massive shift in its population distribution since the beginning of the 20th century. This shift has been characterized by a trend towards urbanization and creation of large metropolitan areas,2 like Des Moines and Cedar Rapids. These movements are masked when figures for the whole state are examined. State population data taken alone do not reveal fundamental changes which have occurred within Iowa.

Iowa's youth will enter a job market that is changing rapidly in response to demands of a rapidly changing technology. In general, Iowa's trend in available jobs is away from the less skilled jobs toward the more highly skilled ones. Clearly, the parallel statement is that the trend is toward jobs requiring more education.

One of every two Iowa farm owners has received family assistance in acquiring ownership of their farm resources. These intrafamily farm transfers appear to be increasing throughout the state. This trend is in keeping with farm transfer experiences in older parts of this country as well as in the western European countries from which our farm property system evolved.

Sooner or later all farm-owning parents and their children must face the problems of transferring the home farm within the family. These problems arise out of the inevitable processes of life and death and the continuity of rights in farm property ...

Two major problems have troubled American commercial agriculture over the last decade or longer. These problems are related, but not identical.

l. The Overproduction Problem. The first problem is the tendency for U.S. farmers to produce too much -- and for farm incomes to be depressed.
