A History Of The Council Of Social Agencies Of Louisville, Kentucky., Mary Trueheart Williamson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Community social planning has recently received the spotlight of attention under the impacts of war and its related demands for a united nation and community. But to those who have had a more intimate contact with the field of social work this is not a new development. For more than twenty years there has been in urban areas a steady growth of organizations known as councils of social agencies, welfare councils, or community councils whose job it has been to coordinate and plan the social welfare programs for the communities of which they are a part. As in other cities, …

A Study Of Day Care Particularly In Reference To Louisville, Kentucky., Nancy Lee Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A problem of great concern to many communities in the United States is that of day care of children of working mothers. Since the beginning of the defense program and particularly after the United States entered the war, wide publicity has been given to the problem of children left without supervision while their mothers worked. Communities that were affected by increases in population began to establish committees to cope with the situation. Numerous surveys were conducted in an attempt to measure the adequacy of existing facilities and the extent of the need for additional day care centers. Congressional action made …

A Study Of Twenty-Eight Working Mothers And Their Problems., Marianna E. Lawson May 1943

A Study Of Twenty-Eight Working Mothers And Their Problems., Marianna E. Lawson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

What are the problems of working mothers was the question that was uppermost in our minds when we began our study of twenty-eight working mothers and their families. We felt that through examining data regarding ages, occupation, education, marital status, number of dependents, et cetera that we would be able to ascertain at once some of the difficulties these mothers were facing. We wanted to know how much of the financial burden the mother carried and whether she was showing any signs of strain because of her double duties of wage earner and housekeeper. What help did she have from …

A Study Of Japanese International Short Wave Radio Propaganda, Leonard A. Smoll Apr 1943

A Study Of Japanese International Short Wave Radio Propaganda, Leonard A. Smoll

Psychology ETDs

This study of Japanese war-time propaganda, beamed toward the United States and disseminated by the medium of international short wave radio, was inspired by these considerations. War-time restrictions on the press, local broadcasting, and landline facilities close the channels to which Japan could get the desired propaganda material into a neutral country, she would have no assurance that the material would reach the ultimate objective in unadulterated form. These obvious barriers to Japan's propaganda machine raise the question: Is there any channel or communication through which Japan may direct biased information straight to the recipient, and delivered uncensored? The answer …

The History Of Silver City, New Mexico 1870-1886, Conrad Keeler Naegle

History ETDs

In the best days of its past Silver City was never so good as now; never so prosperous, optimistic, filled with the spirit of growing and building.

Parenthetically, if anything we write about Silver City or any place else seems so glowing that you incline to skepticism, suspecting it was written for the gratification of the local inhabitants, don't take our word for it. Go see for yourself. You will discover more than we have put down on paper.

Administrative Reorganization Of The Government Of The State Of Virginia Under Governor Byrd, Robert Greg Barr

Administrative reorganization is a tremendous subject. In the final analysis, it involves the history of administrative organization, proposals for its improvement, reforms in its structure, desirability of further changes, and the adequacy and beneficial effects of changes already instituted, as well as the broad ramifications of governmental theory inextricably related to any scheme of administrative structure. It is a study of the entire executive branch of a government in all its aspects. These subjects offer interesting fields of research for the student of government and history, as well as the student of economics in some instances. Exploitation of the opportunities …

A Dictionary Of Athletic Terms For Twelve Sports, Chris Lester Kjeldsen

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Every person who either participates in or witnesses an athletic activity acquires an interest in the definitions of the terms that have specific meaning in relation to that activity. In seeking definitions, the layman, the student, or the instructor naturally desires the simplest, most do noise, and the best understood definition at his disposal. It is with this idea in mind that I have endeavored to cover twelve sports.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

As early as February, 1942, fears of an agricultural labor shortage began to be expressed in California. The Pacific Southwest Area Committee of the Young Men’s Christian Association asserts in a statement of policy on Emergency Harvest Camps, “The California State Chamber of Commerce’s Central Coast Council’s Agricultural Committee points out that ‘the removal of enemy aliens from coastal areas, the absorption of migrant workers into defense industries, and increased government quotas for the production of many crops has created a serious agricultural problem.’ (News release, February 28, 1942).”

In San Joaquin County 5,000 Japanese were evacuated. Most of these …
