Misinformation In Countries With Limited Technological Literacies: How Individuals In Sub-Sahara Africa Engage With Fake News, Gregory Gondwe
Misinformation In Countries With Limited Technological Literacies: How Individuals In Sub-Sahara Africa Engage With Fake News, Gregory Gondwe
Communication Studies Faculty Publications
In an event where the problem of information access is almost terra incognita, the derivate challenge is whether too much information is bad. Most research suggests so, yet very few attempts have been made to examine the digital inequalities and literacies that shape how an individual is exposed, consumes, shares, and ends up believing in fake news. This study builds upon focus group data from six sub-Saharan countries to examine how people in sub-Saharan Africa engage with misinformation. This study focuses on variations in digital access and literacy, which indicate how individuals in Africa are exposed to, consume, spread, and …

Entanglements Of Identity And Resilience In The Camp Fire’S Network Of Disaster-Specific Facebook Groups, Bailey C. Benedict
Entanglements Of Identity And Resilience In The Camp Fire’S Network Of Disaster-Specific Facebook Groups, Bailey C. Benedict
Management Faculty Publications
The Camp Fire in California (November 2018) was one of the most destructive wildfires in recorded history. Dozens of Facebook groups emerged to help people impacted by the Camp Fire. Its variety and prevalence throughout recovery make this network of disaster-specific, recovery-oriented social media groups a distinct context for inquiry. Reflexive thematic analysis was performed on 25 interviews with group administrators and publicly available descriptive data from 92 Facebook groups to characterize the composition of the network and explore identity in the groups. Group members’ identities fell into two categories—helpers and survivors—while the groups consisted of six identities: general, specialized, …

Breath Counting As A Measure Of Sustained Attention In Mindfulness Meditation And Its Effect On Mood, John Clapper, Stephen Ware, Fitria Jong Martinez, Kevin Benitez, Hideya Koshino
Psychology Faculty Publications
A great deal of research is currently being carried out on mindfulness meditation, but most of this research suffers from obvious problems and shortcomings. Particularly lacking are objective, observable measures of mindfulness performance that would make it possible to track long-term improvement while at the same time assuring experimental control during individual sessions. One promising method is the so-called breath counting task (BCT) devised by Levinson et al. (2014), which pairs a button-pressing response with each breath during a meditation-like cognitive task. This study involves two experiments investigating the effects of individual-difference variables such as depression, anxiety, personality (Big 5), …

Guidelines & Resources For Digital Preservation At The Csu Libraries, Eric Milenkiewicz
Guidelines & Resources For Digital Preservation At The Csu Libraries, Eric Milenkiewicz
Library Faculty Publications & Presentations
The volume of unique digital assets that need to be managed and preserved by the California State University (CSU) Libraries has increased exponentially over the last decade, a trend that is likely to continue in the years ahead. While some CSU campus libraries have implemented tools such as digital asset management systems (DAMS) to gain greater control and management over their digital assets, many campuses still lack access to a DAMS and the management functions they support. Furthermore, many of the DAMS solutions currently in-use simply back-up data (to local servers or the cloud), which does not constitute a long-term …

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
The associated materials are related to my participation and completion of 14 modules of the ACUE course during the Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters of 2019 – 2020. As the reflection guides note, the modules highlighted engaging students in a manner that is comfortable and natural for my personal style. The sample lesson plan attached in the materials reflects the exploration, introduction, and application approach adapted from the ACUE modules. In the table, I’ve outlined the strategy to encourage initial engagement with the material by using existing knowledge. Each of the exploration activities activates student background knowledge, with one also …

Popular Culture Portrayals Of Latinos And Mental Health, Jose A. Munoz, Anahi Reynoso-Franco, Lydia Perez, Sarai Tovar
Sociology Faculty Publications
Research on the portrayals of Latinos and mental health allows for the conceptualization of a long-lasting social issue. This project identifies the different film and television content that erroneously depicts Latinos with mental illnesses. This study takes a qualitative approach to help describe what roles Latino characters play in the media and how mental health is portrayed by such characters. We selected a purposive sample of cases where Latino roles were played by Latino actors, non-Latino actors, or actors with an “ambiguous” ethnic identity. This collaborative project poses the following research questions: We ask how are Latinos with mental health …

Social Innovation Teaching In Public Administration Online Courses, Kimberly Collins
Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
Social innovation and the role of the university in the community is an important conversation to bring to the classroom. With the campus conversion from quarters to semesters, there is a new opportunity to build upon and focus the work already occurring in my classes with new online technologies and longer terms. With these opportunities, this project proposes to review how to incorporate social innovation into online teaching modules. The goal is to enhance my current classes by integrating social innovation contexts – using critical learning theory, transformational learning, and epistemological development -- into the online learning framework. This was …

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Grant Abstract
Teaching Intersectionality to Improve MSW Students’ Understanding of Oppression and Privilege.
Background and Purpose:
There are growing calls to understand how clients’ multiple intersecting identities result in compounded disadvantage, which leads to disparate and disproportionate outcomes (CSWE, 2008; Ortega & Faller, 2011; Nadan, Spilsbury, & Korbin, 2015; NASW, 2015). Although social work students are required to learn about intersectionality (NASW, 2015), there is some evidence that blind spots remain with respect to the relationship between intersectionality, oppression, and privilege (Bronstein, Berman-Rossi, & Winfield, 2002; Bubar, Cespedes, & Bundy-Fazioli, 2016). In response, this project attempted …

Q2s Enhanced Pedagogical Approaches - Teaching An Old Dog New Tricks, Corrie Roozee
Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
Becoming complacent is quite common after decades of teaching in a department. One may wonder why they should change their approach to the discipline if it has worked for so many years. Over the past 10 years the learning environment, particularly at the University level, as evolved dramatically, and brought with that evolution the need to adapt and adopt new teaching methods to best meet the needs of students. I had the opportunity to complete the ACUE Q2S Course Module Collection for Enhanced Pedagogical Approaches and it afforded me the opportunity to employ several new techniques in my courses beginning …
