The Harms Of Pornography Exposure Among Children And Young People, Michael Flood Feb 2013

The Harms Of Pornography Exposure Among Children And Young People, Michael Flood

Michael G Flood

Exposure to pornography is routine among children and young people, with a range of notable and often troubling effects. Particularly among younger children, exposure to pornography may be disturbing or upsetting. Exposure to pornography helps to sustain young people's adherence to sexist and unhealthy notions of sex and relationships. And, especially among boys and young men who are frequent consumers of pornography, including of more violent materials, consumption intensifies attitudes supportive of sexual coercion and increases their likelihood of perpetrating assault. While children and young people are sexual beings and deserve age-appropriate materials on sex and sexuality, pornography is a …

Separated Fathers And The 'Fathers' Rights' Movement, Michael G. Flood Feb 2013

Separated Fathers And The 'Fathers' Rights' Movement, Michael G. Flood

Michael G Flood

Separated fathers often feel profound grief, distress, and anger at the end of their relationships with their partners and their children. Some participate in 'fathers' rights' groups, a movement which claims to advocate on behalf of men and fathers who are the victims of discrimination and injustice in the Family Court and elsewhere. Yet such groups may do little to help fathers heal or to build or maintain ongoing and positive relationships with their children. Some men do find support in these groups, but they also may be incited into anger, blame, and destructive strategies of litigation. Using a framework …

Involving Men In Efforts To End Violence Against Women, Michael Flood Feb 2013

Involving Men In Efforts To End Violence Against Women, Michael Flood

Michael G Flood

Around the world, there are growing efforts to involve boys and men in the prevention of violence against women: as participants in education programs, as targets of social marketing campaigns, as policy makers and gatekeepers, and as activists and advocates. Efforts to prevent violence against girls and women now increasingly take as given that they must engage men. While there are dangers in doing so, there also is a powerful feminist rationale for such work. This article provides a review of the variety of initiatives which engage or address men in order to prevent violence against women. It maps such …

Reshaping Attitudes Toward Violence Against Women, Natalie Taylor, Michael Flood, Bob Pease, Kim Webster Feb 2013

Reshaping Attitudes Toward Violence Against Women, Natalie Taylor, Michael Flood, Bob Pease, Kim Webster

Michael G Flood

Since the early 1970s, when the grassroots women's movement mounted its challenge to rape and domestic violence, there has been a worldwide revolution in societal responses to violence against women. Among the changes, the best known are the proliferation of community-based services for victims and reforms in public policy, law, policing, and health care. What is less well-known is whether the revolution in societal intervention is reflected in how ordinary citizens think about violence against women. However important institutional reforms are in the short term, they are unlikely to be sustained unless the normative climate changes that supports violence against …

Building Men's Commitment To Ending Sexual Violence Against Women, Michael Flood Feb 2013

Building Men's Commitment To Ending Sexual Violence Against Women, Michael Flood

Michael G Flood

Efforts to prevent sexual violence against women and girls now increasingly take as given that they must engage men and boys. The theater-based intervention described in the previous issue of Feminism & Psychology (Rich, 2010) is one of a wave of programmes and strategies focused on males. Using that intervention as a springboard, this article asks : why should we engage men and boys in preventing violence against women, what strategies are under way and do they work? Educational interventions among males often invite them to become active or pro-social bystanders, taking action to stop the perpetration of specific incidents …

Encourage. Support. Act! Bystander Approaches To Sexual Harassment In The Workplace, Paula Mcdonald, Michael G. Flood Feb 2013

Encourage. Support. Act! Bystander Approaches To Sexual Harassment In The Workplace, Paula Mcdonald, Michael G. Flood

Michael G Flood

Workplace sexual harassment is a persistent and pervasive problem in Australia and elsewhere, demanding new and creative responses. One promising area which may inform prevention and response strategies is bystander approaches. In broad terms, bystander approaches focus on the ways in which individuals who are not the targets of the conduct can intervene in violence, harassment or other anti-social behaviour in order to prevent and reduce harm to others.40 Although bystander approaches have a long history in relation to intervening in emergencies, they have recently been translated to efforts to engage men and boys in the prevention of sexual violence. …

Men As Students And Teachers Of Feminist Scholarship, Michael Flood Feb 2013

Men As Students And Teachers Of Feminist Scholarship, Michael Flood

Michael G Flood

When men participate as students in Women¿s and Gender Studies (WGS) classrooms, they undergo feminist change. They adopt more progressive understandings of gender, show greater support for feminism, and increase their involvement in antisexist activism. Male students in WGS classrooms benefit to the same degree as female students, showing similar levels of change, although they start with poorer attitudes and thus the gap between them and their female peers persists. At the same time, male students¿ presence highlights critical challenges to feminist pedagogy: gendered patterns of interaction, resistance to feminist teaching, and limitations on women¿s critical reflections on personal experience. …

Young Men Using Pornography, Michael Flood Feb 2013

Young Men Using Pornography, Michael Flood

Michael G Flood

Most everyday users of pornography are heterosexual men. Looking at, and masturbating to, pornography is the routine practice of large numbers of men. And most of the commercial pornographic industry caters to heterosexual men. These men -and their consumption of pornography -are the subject of a growing body of research. This chapter offers an overview of what we can learn about heterosexual boys' and young men's use of pornography, focusing particularly on quantitative studies of the extent, nature and meaning of pornography consumption.

Youth, Sex And The Internet, Michael Flood Feb 2013

Youth, Sex And The Internet, Michael Flood

Michael G Flood

For young people, the Internet is a space of both pleasure and danger. On the one hand, the Internet fosters a wide variety of social and sexual interactions, delivers responsible information and advice on sexual and reproductive health, allows the exploration of diverse sexualities, and is a means of sexual pleasure and expression. On the other hand, the Internet has facilitated young people’s unwanted exposure to sexually explicit content and increased their vulnerability to forms of emotional and sexual abuse. Research by the Australia Institute finds that three-quarters of 16 and 17 year-olds have been exposed accidentally to pornographic websites, …
