Technical Standards Literacy In Management Education, Heather A. Howard, Margaret Phillips

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

Industry standards have a significant impact on business as a means to eliminate waste, reduce costs, market products (e.g., for quality, safety, interoperability) and lessen liability (Thompson, 2011). Consequently, an understanding of and ability to use standards, agreed upon practices among interested or vested parties, is a critical workplace competency for those engaged in business and industry. To have a workforce competent in the use of standards, higher education curricula must be developed to integrate standards education at appropriate points within the curriculum. Despite the importance of standards, they are not universally integrated into the college and university curricula. Given …

Business Librarians Confronting Predatory Publishing, Marydee Ojala

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

Predatory publishing is a scourge on the information/library landscape. They waste time, spread spurious information, diminish the power of scholarly research, and damage reputations. Cabell’s lists over 12,000 titles in its Blacklist, most of them in the sciences. Should business librarians be concerned about predatory journals? How can we help our faculty and grad students avoid publishing in fake titles, dissuade them from accepting invitations to be on editorial boards of shoddy journals, and warn them about deceptive conferences?

I'Ll Take Business Databases For 500, Christine Kickels

A Lightning Introduction To Wrds, Ash Faulkner

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

Wharton Research Data Services (commonly known as 'WRDS') is an essential data platform on many university campuses with a research-intensive business program. The platform can host a wide range of data subscriptions including BoardEx, Compustat, CRSP, IBES, Option Metrics, Thompson Reuters data and much more. Often a WRDS subscription is funded through the business program, rather than through the library, but it is essential that business librarians are familiar with this source and if at all possible are able to access and efficiently work through some of the more common data pull requests. As data literacy becomes an increasingly important …

Mapping Il Skills To The Departmental Curriculum, Naomi Schemm

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

Problem: some departments use your services heavily for IL instruction, to the point that content gets repetitive for some students. Others use your instruction not at all. Other class visits are hit or miss, based on whether or not you have a relationship with that particular instructor. Attempted solution: mapping specific information literacy skills and database usage onto certain critical classes in a given major. The presenter is piloting this curriculum & IL-skills mapping with the Marketing department in summer 2019, and will give an update on her progress thus far.

When Databases Are No Longer An Option: Teaching Students About Open Access Resources For Business Information, Teresa Williams Jul 2019

When Databases Are No Longer An Option: Teaching Students About Open Access Resources For Business Information, Teresa Williams

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

Academic librarians spend a great deal of time teaching students how to use research databases to find business information, but the unfortunate reality is that students typically lose access to university subscription databases upon commencement. Without adequate training on reliable alternatives, new graduates can find themselves struggling to resolve their information needs as they transition into the business workplace.

To address this issue, the Business Librarian at Butler University Libraries created a Business Research Workshop (BRW) to teach students about open and public access resources for business information. What began a few years ago as a trial offering for five …
