Following lunch, attendees will break into 5 groups, indicated below. These group meetings will each be co-facilitated by persons familiar with Dr. Fisher's work and with the needs to adoptive parents and adopted children. The goal of sessions will be to continue the discussion of the implication of Dr. Fisher's work in very practical terms, and relating the discussion to the audience for that breakout. Positive aspects most often cited included: being a part of two cultures; developing personal awareness, open-mindedness, and deeper understandings; and being unique. Common negative aspects included isolation from one’s adoptive and birth families and cultures; the burden of dealing with others’ assumptions and questions about transracial adoption; and identity …

Keynote: Innovations And Best Practices: Helping Adoptive Families Overcome Early Adversities, Philip Fisher

Rudd Adoption Research Program Annual Conferences

Children who have experienced foster care and adoption often have early adverse experiences that impact their development and complicate effective parenting.
