Analysis Of Sri Lanka’S Ethnic Inequality Through The Lens Of Polarities Of Democracy, Samanga Amarasinghe

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Sri Lanka, despite gaining independence in 1948, has been plagued by ethnic separatism, negatively impacting 29.9% of its ethnic minorities and causing violence and civil unrest throughout the nation. This has hindered the nation’s sustained growth and development. This study addresses Sri Lanka’s ethnic separatism by examining three stages of its history through the lens of the polarities of democracy model. The research question for the study is “How has the balance of polarities of democracy contributed or detracted from Sri Lanka’s pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial governance in terms of sustaining ethnic harmony?” The study took the form of a …

Beyond Incarceration: Identification Of Post-Incarceration Strategies For Successful Reintegration, Sharon D. Walker Mar 2024

Beyond Incarceration: Identification Of Post-Incarceration Strategies For Successful Reintegration, Sharon D. Walker

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The problem that was addressed in this study was the high rate of recidivism among released offenders in the United States. Recidivism results in the rearrest of up to 650,000 offenders within 3 years of release. Reentry barriers are a primary cause of recidivism across the United States, as released offenders struggle to reintegrate into their communities. Policymakers and researchers have not focused on non-recidivating ex-convicts who designed, implemented, and maintained strategies for successful living. Rather than identifying obstacles ex-convicts face, which have been long recognized, the purpose of this phenomenological study was to investigate and identify post-incarceration strategies for …

The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore the experiences of 10 AA adults ages 18–25 with SCD to understand what education was necessary for policymakers to reform legislation and …

A Qualitative Study Of County Political Party Response To The Top-Two Primary In Washington State, Lori Larsen Mar 2024

A Qualitative Study Of County Political Party Response To The Top-Two Primary In Washington State, Lori Larsen

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The top-two primary election system, used on a limited basis in the United States, allows all voters (regardless of party preference) to vote for any candidate on the ballot for the primary election; the top-two vote earners advance to the general election, regardless of candidate party preference. Two candidates with the same party preference may advance. Additionally, political parties have no formal ability to affirm or disavow a candidate’s party preference. The effects of this system include uncertainty among county political parties and voters. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand Washington State county political party response to …

The purpose of this study was to determine if teaching positive psychology in Boston, Massachusetts (MA)-area university college classrooms helped improve race relations. The primary research question involved determining factors that create racism and racial violence in society. The second research question was about if an education policy …

Voters’ Perception Of Public Corruption And Low Voter Turnout: A Qualitative Case Study Of Cook County, Dawn Merdelin Johnson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Public corruption has been a persistent issue in Cook County, Illinois, for over four decades. Research on major global democracies has demonstrated a connection between public corruption and low voter turnout. This qualitative study explored whether the same connection existed in the Cook County 2019 Municipal Election. This study used purposeful sampling to select and interview three registered voters in Cook County. This study also applied Rational Choice Theory to determine whether voters voted according to their self-interest. Data were collected through semistructured telephone interviews. A thematic analysis was used to reveal five broad themes: public corruption is self-serving, voting …

Promotion To Fire Officer: Ems Is An Essential Component Of Promotional Testing, Brenda Kay Farlow Jan 2023

Promotion To Fire Officer: Ems Is An Essential Component Of Promotional Testing, Brenda Kay Farlow

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractFor the past 25 years, the number of fire department responses to structure fires nationally has gone down. Structure fires now reflect less than ten percent of the responses of the fire service. In the same period, emergency medical services (EMS) have become the overwhelming activity of most fire departments. The problem is the promotional process focuses on firefighting knowledge and skills while ignoring the absolute need for EMS competencies, in some capacity, for a supervisory position. The lack of change in the promotional process is related to the organizational culture of the individual fire departments and the collective difficulty …

The Effect Of Federal And State-Level Policy On Undocumented Childhood Arrivals, Kim Kaczmarowski Jan 2023

The Effect Of Federal And State-Level Policy On Undocumented Childhood Arrivals, Kim Kaczmarowski

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) provides a 2-year reprieve from deportation and a work permit for eligible undocumented childhood arrivals. It does not provide a pathway to citizenship or confer rights or protections enjoyed by those with permanent legal status leaving recipients in a constant state of legal limbo. State-level policy can mitigate or exacerbate obstacles faced by this population. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore how federal and state-level policy in a conservative location shaped experiences of membership or exclusion. Responses were examined using segmented assimilation theory to identify layered contexts of reception. The …
