What Makes An Effective Press Release: A Coorientation Approach Of Public Relations Practitioners And News Editors In Sport , Joel Robert Janecek

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study explores relationships between public relations practitioners in sport and sport news editors. As a viable communications method used by both public relations practitioners and sport news editors, the press release was examined using the communication theory of coorientation. The study used individual press release elements as coorientational objects. Seventy-five public relations practitioners, in this case Sports Information Directors at NCAA Division I institutions, and forty-four sports news editors who cover college athletics participated in an email survey. Research questions were tested on the relationships between agreement and accuracy as it pertained to the various press release elements proposed ...

Portrayals Of Women In Prime Time Reality Tv Programs, Ivonne Martinez-Sheperd

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Reality shows are among the most exciting and successful forms of TV program today. The different styles and format of these shows have favorably positioned them in the network markets, generating high ratings and large profits. Because they have been tremendously popular TV fare, how do they portray females and minority women? Do they, as past studies have found, depict women negatively and in largely domestic roles?;This study aims to determine the extent to which women were shown and how they were portrayed in reality TV shows. It examined the content of a census of reality shows aired from ...

Content Analysis Of The Des Moines Register's Coverage Of Women In Sport Through Photographs Since Title Ix, Kimberly Jo Bell

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the specific coverage of girls and women in sport photographs by the Des Moines Register since the inception of Title IX in 1972. This particular time period was chosen because of the impact Title IX has had on the numbers of girls and women participating in sport. Using George Gerbner's theory of cultivation as a theoretical basis, the study sought to determine whether the photographs and their descriptors portray stereotypical images of women and girls in sport.;While there have been several studies conducted on the portrayal of women in sporting ...

Bioregional Communication: Watersheds, Community Participation And Synchronicity, Corrintha Elizabeth Seaman Jan 1998

Bioregional Communication: Watersheds, Community Participation And Synchronicity, Corrintha Elizabeth Seaman

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a qualitative study about community participation in watershed management. Specifically, it looks for evidence of bottom-up participation. The study is a meta-evaluation of eighteen watershed projects from the perspective of local change agents. The watershed projects are evaluated in terms of levels of participation from top-down to bottom-up. Agent understandings of participation, their processes of building citizen partnerships and their experiences of trust within communities are explored. The findings show that there is no consensus among agents on what bottom-up participation means, that participation falls along a continuum from ritual to authentic and that participation depends on ...

The Invisible "Model Minority": Images Of Koreans On American Tv, Hoon Shim Jan 1997

The Invisible "Model Minority": Images Of Koreans On American Tv, Hoon Shim

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

There is a growing literature on how television employs stereotypes especially about ethnic minorities. But these studies investigating audience impact of negative images on TV have relatively excluded Korean-Americans, one of the largest Asian-American ethnic minority groups. To answer this need and to further examine the axioms of cultivation theory, this study assessed how American students in a Midwestern land grant university perceive images of Korean-Americans on TV. A stratified cluster sampling of students attending 1997 summer classes at Iowa State University was surveyed. Results did not lend support to the cultivation hypothesis: subjects simply did not ascribe stereotypical television ...

The Agenda-Setting Relationship Between The News Media And Public Opinion: The Case Of Global Warming 1988-1992, Craig Warren Trumbo

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an investigation of the relationship between the mass media and public opinion. For just over twenty years, mass communication researchers have been studying this relationship under the rubric of agenda-setting. This thesis will embrace that approach.

Agenda-setting is a term applied somewhat loosely to a class of research which seeks to unveil relationships between what the mass media portray as important and what the public considers to be important. This line of inquiry grew out of social scientists' interest in the effects of the mass media on society. The central question in all agenda-setting studies is: Do ...

The Effects Of Alcohol Advertising On Youth Attitudes Toward Drinking And Driving: A Preliminary Study , David Glenn Miller Jan 1986

The Effects Of Alcohol Advertising On Youth Attitudes Toward Drinking And Driving: A Preliminary Study , David Glenn Miller

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Drinking and driving has received more careful research than other alcohol related problems. One thing this research tells us is that alcohol advertising appears to contribute to certain forms of problem drinking (Atkin et al., 1983). Another is that there is a moderately positive correlation between the amount of day to day exposure to beer, wine, and liquor ads and both excessive alcohol consumption and drinking in hazardous contexts such as automobile driving (Atkin et al., 1983).

Scapegoats, Slackers And Spies: The Portrayal Of Germany, Germans And German-Americans By Three Eastern Iowa Newspapers During World War I , Lucinda Lee Stephenson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

It was a time when sauerkraut became "liberty cabbage" and hamburger became "liberty steak." Berlin, Iowa, started calling itself Lincoln, Iowa, and scores of people filled court houses across the country to have their German surnames changed to "more patriotic and American" names. All aspects of German culture were frowned upon by loyal patriots of the red, white and blue: things that were once a great source of pride for German-Americans suddenly became a source of shame. America's participation in World War I sparked a period of national paranoia, hysteria and violence--the likes of which America would not see ...
