The Health Belief Model And Preventive Health Behavior: An Analysis Of Alternative Models Of Causal Relationships , Robbyn R. Wacker Jan 1990

The Health Belief Model And Preventive Health Behavior: An Analysis Of Alternative Models Of Causal Relationships , Robbyn R. Wacker

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Three areas of preventive health behavior using data from the National Survey of Preventive Health Practices and Consequences were investigated. First the latent constructs of preventive health behaviors were examined for fourteen preventive health behaviors. A confirmatory factor analysis using LISREL was conducted on three different hypothesized models, each representing a different way to conceptualize health behaviors. The model based on a common approach to grouping health behavior resulted in a model that was empirically unsound suggesting a need to identify the mechanisms that facilitate the clustering of preventive health actions; The second research question investigated the Health Belief Model ...

The Effect Of Daily Hassles, Reported Managerial Behavior, Family Adaptability And Cohesion On Family Health , Mary Elizabeth Garrison Jan 1990

The Effect Of Daily Hassles, Reported Managerial Behavior, Family Adaptability And Cohesion On Family Health , Mary Elizabeth Garrison

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The present research examines a comprehensive model of family resource management, using Deacon and Firebaugh's (1988) family resource management theoretical model of the conceptual framework. The components of this model are inputs, transformations, and outputs. The primary hypothesis of the current study is that family well-being as measured by family health symptomology (an output) is influenced by daily hassles (inputs), but is mediated by the transformation of managerial behavior, family adaptability and family cohesion; The data for the study were obtained during the Spring of 1988 through mail surveys as a part of an eight state regional project. This ...

Canadian Agriculture Factor Retention Under Different Policy Regimes , Janice Eileen Krakar Jan 1990

Canadian Agriculture Factor Retention Under Different Policy Regimes , Janice Eileen Krakar

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The study explores the implications different Canadian policy regimes have for agriculture resource markets. Particular attention is focused on agriculture labor retention. Two markedly different policy regimes are analyzed: a continuation of the current commodity specific policy setting and a decoupled policy setting which is composed purely of lump sum transfers to farm operator labor. The amount of income transferred to agriculture producers in the decoupled policy setting is set equal to the compensating variation associated with current policies. The compensating variation is determined as the difference between Canadian producers net income when all countries, inclusive of Canada, continue with ...

Coincident with the 1985 act and EEP legislation, U.S. wheat exports have increased significantly. This study uses a ...

The Effect Of A Pet's Presence Upon Anxiety During A Simulated Clinical Interview, Kenneth G. Weigand Jan 1990

The Effect Of A Pet's Presence Upon Anxiety During A Simulated Clinical Interview, Kenneth G. Weigand

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Recognizing the importance of evolutionary parallels between humans and other animals, researchers make use of animals to better the understanding of people in various fields of study, such as history, ecology, medicine, psychology, and sociology (Levinson, 1978). Boris Levinson (1962) was an early advocate for the inclusion of pets in psychotherapeutic intervention. His theories have been frequently cited in research that has attempted to define the possible benefits associated with utilizing pets as an adjunct in the treatment of disturbed populations. The results of studies with varied populations indicate that a pet's presences can lower a person's anxiety ...

A Time Series Analysis Of The Real Exchange Rate Movement In Korea , Jin-Ock Kim Jan 1990

A Time Series Analysis Of The Real Exchange Rate Movement In Korea , Jin-Ock Kim

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The motivation of this study is to investigate the performance of purchasing power parity (PPP) in the Pacific Rim. The overall impression of the Unit Root and Cointegration Tests is that PPP does not hold in the Pacific Rim;Standard theory suggests that monetary shocks may induce temporary deviations from PPP; given the long-run neutrality of money, these deviations should eventually be eliminated. Real disturbances, on the other hand, are thought to have the ability to induce permanent changes in the real exchange rate. To ascertain the sources of PPP shocks, we have employed Sims' (1980a, 1980b) vector autoregression (VAR ...

Measuring The Impacts Of Credit Restrictions On The Trade Performance Of Debtor Nations , Velupillai Premakumar Jan 1990

Measuring The Impacts Of Credit Restrictions On The Trade Performance Of Debtor Nations , Velupillai Premakumar

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The interdependence of the developed world economy and that of the third world has been increasingly evident since the debt crisis of the eighties. International trade declined with the consequence of global economic stagnation. One major contributor to the cumulative and self reinforcing nature of the crisis is the trade impacts of the restrictive capital flows. Trade models applied to extract the debt-to-trade linkages have generally over looked the micro economic behavior that lead to the observed macroeconomic performance. Micro economic models abound that examine the theoretical concerns of this issue. This study re-examines the theoretical considerations, especially as they ...

Sensors for the determination of pH have been developed which are based on the immobilization of direct dyes at hydrolyzed cellulosic films. The performance and structural characteristics of the sensors were investigated by a variety of spectroscopic methods, and applications for remote sensing were developed. Films of cellulose acetate were base hydrolyzed in 0.07 M KOH to yield a porous support structure. The structural changes resulting from the hydrolysis on cellulose acetate were probed with infrared internal reflectance spectroscopy. The progress of the hydrolysis reaction was monitored by the changes in vibrational modes of the acetyl group, and other ...

Theory And Econometric Analysis Of State Government Demand For Public Agricultural Research , Jyoti Khanna Jan 1990

Theory And Econometric Analysis Of State Government Demand For Public Agricultural Research , Jyoti Khanna

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study analyzes state government demand for public agricultural research. Several theoretical models of spending are analyzed. These models cover the pure public good and the impure public good formulations. Under the impure specification, the joint-use and the joint product models are analyzed. The pure public good and the impure public good models are analyzed under alternative allocation schemes of Nash-Cournot and Lindahl. The Nash-Cournot reduced-form demand functions show that demand for agricultural research is a function of prices, full income and the amount of spillins from the other states; Lindahl demand depends on prices, income and the share of ...

From Sect To Cult To Sect: The Christian Catholic Church In Zion , Warren Jay Beaman Jan 1990

From Sect To Cult To Sect: The Christian Catholic Church In Zion , Warren Jay Beaman

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This is an ethnographic case study of the founding of the Christian Catholic Church and Zion, IL, by John Alexander Dowie from 1893 to 1905. This group is analyzed as first a sect, then a cult, and finally a sect. This is not the expected change from sect to denomination suggested by Niebuhr following Troeltsch;Recent research on cults and sects follows Stark and Bainbridge's definitions. Both cult and sect are deviant religious movements. The sect revitalizes an established religion and the cult begins a new religion. The Stark and Bainbridge definition proves inadequate in its prediction of cult ...

The Theoretical Input-Output System With Flexible Technological Coefficients Based On The Two-Stage Level Ces-Type Production Function , Han Soo Han Jan 1990

The Theoretical Input-Output System With Flexible Technological Coefficients Based On The Two-Stage Level Ces-Type Production Function , Han Soo Han

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

An economy is a complex organizational system. In such an economic system, the various economic factors (behaviors) have influences on or are affected by the economic phenomena through causal interactions of the price-resource mechanism. In other words, the economic phenomena vary in response to the various economic behaviors, and vice versa. They are interdependent in an economic system;Under such an interdependent economic system, a method of systematically analyzing the interrelationships among the economic behaviors is the input-output analysis (system). The system of input-output analysis was first developed by W. W. Leontief on the bases of both Quesnay's Tableau ...

The Effects Of Gender And Status On Power Strategy Use , Robin Elizabeth Nelson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined the effects of gender and status on self-reported likelihood of power strategy use. Female and male subjects reported the likelihood of their taking each of 24 actions in order to influence a male or female target of lower, equal or higher status. Subjects also rated the perceived effectiveness and desirability of each of the influence tactics. Based upon Falbo and Peplau's two-dimensional model (1980), four types of power strategies were identified: bilateral, unilateral, direct and indirect. As predicted, persons of lower status were more likely to be the recipients of direct strategies than persons of ...

Three Essays On Strategic Trade Policy: Precommitment, Time Consistency, And Effects Of A Ratio Quota , Chongkook Park Jan 1990

Three Essays On Strategic Trade Policy: Precommitment, Time Consistency, And Effects Of A Ratio Quota , Chongkook Park

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the strategic behavior of firms under imperfect competition in international trade; We utilize the Spencer-Brander multi-stage game in which two firms; one foreign and one domestic, compete as Cournot rivals in a third country. A three-stage game is characterized as: (1) one home government sets subsidies on both export and investment, (2) firms choose the levels of investment, and (3) firms choose output levels. We show that it is not generally optimal to choose investment levels that minimize costs in a Spencer-Brander model. Precommiting both investment and output levels by a home government (as a normal Stackelberg ...
