The Impact Of Coping Resources And Strategies Upon Health: An Analysis Of Age And Sex Differences , Gale Ellen West Jan 1987

The Impact Of Coping Resources And Strategies Upon Health: An Analysis Of Age And Sex Differences , Gale Ellen West

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Currently, interest in stress and coping appears to be at an all time high in both popular and scholarly literature. Documentation of negative effects from high levels of stress has been firmly established in a number of scientific fields of inquiry, including medicine, psychology and psychiatry, sociology, and even economic studies of worker productivity. However, the quest for ways to ameliorate debilitating stress effects is outstripping our ability to understand the nature of the coping process. The current study focuses not only on the issue of what social and psychological resources appear to moderate stress effects, but also how those ...

Incidence Of Poverty Among Elderly Men And Women , Yuko Nakayama Iijima

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Despite the improved economic situation of the elderly as a whole, certain segments of the aged still face severe economic hardships. The focus of this study is on elderly women. Because of the longevity differences by sex, interrupted labor force participation, and sexual earnings gap, elderly women often face income maintenance problems in old age;Data from the 1968, 1973, 1978, and 1983 waves of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics are analyzed to examine the poverty situation among the elderly. A subsample of white households headed by those aged 47 and over in 1968 (N = 733) are followed over ...

An Investigation Of Storage And Communication Codes For An Electronic Library , Mansour Alsulaiman Jan 1987

An Investigation Of Storage And Communication Codes For An Electronic Library , Mansour Alsulaiman

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

To investigate different codes that are to be used in compressing data in an electronic library system, the author developed an image data base, at the resolution of the IBM PC (640 x 200 x 2), that represents typical library materials. The CCITT standard one and two dimensional compression techniques were applied to this data base and gave a compression factor (c.f.) less than the c.f. reported in the literature at higher resolution. The standards gave a very low c.f. for images that contain a lot of text. The Lempel-Ziv-Welch (LZW) algorithm, which is usually used to ...

An Analysis Of The Relationships Between Selected Variables And The Adoption And Diffusion Of Computers For Instructional Purposes Among Community College Faculty , Dennis U. Anderson Jan 1987

An Analysis Of The Relationships Between Selected Variables And The Adoption And Diffusion Of Computers For Instructional Purposes Among Community College Faculty , Dennis U. Anderson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The adoption of computers by faculty for instructional purposes depends on a universe of variables which either facilitate or hinder the change process. This study surveyed 305 community college faculty in order to examine the relationships between the intensity of adoption and perceived faculty barriers to the adoption of computers. The perceived barriers examined were (1) administrative support for educational computing, (2) the institution's economic climate, (3) the complexity of computers, and (4) the attitudes of faculty towards the use of computers. The variables of age and sex (gender) were also examined for relationships to the areas of adoption ...

Private Provision Of Local Rural Roads , Cathy A. Hamlett Jan 1987

Private Provision Of Local Rural Roads , Cathy A. Hamlett

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The rural road and bridge problem is the lack of funds to upgrade and maintain the rapidly deteriorating rural transportation infrastructure. The research analyzed the concept of privately provided public roads through a utility maximization model, with a joint product aspect. The jointness coming from the private, public benefits of a road. Equilibrium conditions of road provision, under Nash-Cournot behavior, were derived. A comparative static analysis was conducted on the Nash-Cournot model. Pareto-optimizing behavior was also investigated and the results compared to Nash-Cournot provision levels. The Pareto-optimal model indicated conditions where a set of roads could be abandoned;A benefit-cost ...

Plasma Concentrations Of Testosterone In Adult Male Rats Following Acquisition Of Copulation-Illness Associations , Paul Charles Koch Jan 1987

Plasma Concentrations Of Testosterone In Adult Male Rats Following Acquisition Of Copulation-Illness Associations , Paul Charles Koch

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Prior research has demonstrated that testosterone is necessary for the expression of copulatory behaviors in adult male rats. Further, stimuli paired with copulatory experiences elevate circulating levels of testosterone. The purpose of the present experiment was to assess testosterone levels in adult male rats whose copulatory behaviors had been associatively inhibited. Each male rat was exposed to an inaccessible estrous female for seven min and was then given an opportunity to copulate. Two groups received an injection of either lithium chloride (LiCl; 0.3 M, 20 ml/kg, ip; n = 9) or saline (0.3 M, 20 ml/kg, ip ...

Fact Construction In The Social Sciences: An Ethnography Of A Community Development Laboratory , Brad J. Stewart Jan 1987

Fact Construction In The Social Sciences: An Ethnography Of A Community Development Laboratory , Brad J. Stewart

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The sociology of science has recently undergone a paradigmatic revolution (Kuhn, 1970). A new view of science, known as the constructivist program, has emerged as a viable research paradigm (Woolgar, 1982). This study applies the central tenets of the constructivist program to social science research. Toward this end, ethnographic data-gathering techniques were employed to study a community development laboratory at a large, midwestern, land-grant university; The results of this study support the constructivist conclusion that there are few differences between natural and social scientific inquiry. More specifically, this research demonstrates that social scientific inquiry, like natural scientific inquiry, is constructive ...

The Relative Effects Of Family Factors And Opportunity Factors On Juvenile Delinquency , Phyllis A. Gray Jan 1987

The Relative Effects Of Family Factors And Opportunity Factors On Juvenile Delinquency , Phyllis A. Gray

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the relative impact of family factors (parental supervision and control, parental rejection, family structure) and perceived blocked opportunities (educational and occupational) on juvenile delinquency. Strain theory claims that delinquency results when youths are unable to achieve monetary success or middle-class status through legitimate means. In contast, social control theory states that delinquency may result when youths' attachments to significant others (i.e., parents) are weakened or broken; The goal of the present research is to determine the relationship between variables derived from the aforementioned theories and the seriousness of delinquency. The predictive powers of the theoretical ...

Cognitive And Social Desirability Factors In Marital Adjustment For A Sample Of Retired Older Adults, Priscilla B. Wilson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated cognitive components of marital adjustment and the role of social desirability response sets in a sample of retired older adults. It was hypothesized that higher marital adjustment scores would correlate negatively with dysfunctional beliefs concerning marriage. The objectives of the study were to identify which irrational beliefs are related to higher and lower levels of marital adjustment, and to determine the extent to which higher adjustment scores refelct the tendency to respond in a socially desirable manner. The sample consisted of 45 married coupes, each partner of which was retired and aged 65 years or older. Assessment ...

Changing Attitudes Toward Women's Employment , Susan Carney Daniewicz

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The effects of membership and reference groups on attitudes toward women's employment were analyzed using four waves of the mature woman cohort of the National Longitudinal Survey. Attitudes, attitude change and change in employment and desire for employment were all considered. Evidence is presented for the influence of both membership and reference groups on attitudes and attitude change. Women who are employed and prefer to stay that way are more approving of women's employment at all points in time. In addition, employed women's rate of approval appears to be accelerating relative to the remainder of the sample ...

Marital Power In The Middle Years , Delores Brick Dunagan Jan 1987

Marital Power In The Middle Years , Delores Brick Dunagan

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to study power as defined in the family research literature and to incorporate concepts and theories from the family therapy literature in the analysis in light of a discrepancy between these fields. Power has been identified by family researchers as a multidimensional concept with three domains: (1) power bases, (2) power processes, and (3) power outcomes. The word, "power," has been used less by family therapists, who have used related systemic terms such as differentiation, boundaries, and hierarchies;Data resulted from a 1980 study of 58 "healthy families" modeled after the Timberlawn Healthy Family ...

Soap Opera Viewers' Perceptions Of The Real World, Gayle Seese Jan 1987

Soap Opera Viewers' Perceptions Of The Real World, Gayle Seese

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The frequency of occurrence on typical soap operas of incidents such as homicide, infidelity, and mental breakdown is much greater than is the case in real life. Also, various occupations (e.g., medical profession, legal profession) are overrepresented in these programs. The present study investigated the extent to which heavy soap opera viewers are influenced by these representations. Specifically, the differences between long term soap opera viewers’ and non-soap opera viewers’ perceptions about people and events in the real world were investigated. The subjects’ perceptions of the frequency of occurrences in the general population of such events as divorce, extramarital ...
