Traditional Sex Roles, Ethnic Integration, Marital Satisfaction, And Psychological Distress Among Chicanas , Rogelio Saenz Jan 1986

Traditional Sex Roles, Ethnic Integration, Marital Satisfaction, And Psychological Distress Among Chicanas , Rogelio Saenz

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

It has been argued that the devaluing of the traditional housewife role in industrial and postindustrial societies has had an impact on women's mental well-being. More traditional women tend to experience higher levels of psychological distress than their less traditional peers;A model is proposed to explain the effects of traditional sex roles on psychological distress among Chicanas. It is hypothesized that women holding less traditional roles receive more help with housework from their husbands than more traditional ones. Those who receive more help from their spouses with these chores are expected to experience higher levels of marital satisfaction ...

Macroeconomic Policy And Farmland Value: A Dynamic, Portfolio-Balance Approach , Alan Dean Barkema Jan 1986

Macroeconomic Policy And Farmland Value: A Dynamic, Portfolio-Balance Approach , Alan Dean Barkema

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

An important factor in the financial adjustment affecting the agricultural sector of the U.S. economy during the 1980s is a substantial decline in the average real price of farmland. This study is an investigation of the existence and extent of relationships among macroeconomic policy, the real rate of interest, and the real price of farmland;Experiments performed with the dynamic, portfolio-balance model developed in this investigation suggest that an expansionary ficsal policy conducted in an environment of monetary restraint leads to (1) an increase in the real rate of interest, (2) a decline in returns to land, and (3 ...

Three Essays In Macroeconomics , Bobbie Lee Horn

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The dissertation is composed of three separate essays. The first deals, somewhat briefly, with the efforts of Rudolf Hilferding as a theoretician and as a Finance Minister. The second reconsiders Keynes' notion of full employment, while the third looks at Keynes and rational expectations.

Estimation Of The Marginal Values Of Water As An Instream Resource For Recreational Fishing: A National Analysis , Leroy Thomas Hansen Jan 1986

Estimation Of The Marginal Values Of Water As An Instream Resource For Recreational Fishing: A National Analysis , Leroy Thomas Hansen

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Streamflow throughout the U.S. may be put to a variety of uses, some that involve the water's consumption (e.g., irrigation, municipal consumption, etc.) and others that use water as a public good (e.g., white water rafting, fishing, etc.). As consumptive water demands have grown and water has been allocated towards meeting these demands, the public use demands for water have also been growing. To insure the efficient allocation of our limited water supply, consideration must be given to water's value in each of its alternative uses.;This study focuses on estimating water's public use ...

The Farm Crisis: Stress, Alienation, And The Political Orientation Of Iowa Farm Operators , Jack Mitchell Geller

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Sociological discussions of the social-psychological impacts of economic hardship have focused primarily on the industrial sector. This study extends this focus by testing some social-psychological impacts on Iowa farm operators of the contemporary financial crisis in agriculture. A two-stage research design was used in the analysis; The first stage of the analysis involved a detailed examination of the relationship between economic hardship and stress. The effects of several moderator variables upon this relationship were explored using a multiple regression framework; The second stage of the analysis tested a structural model of the impacts of economic hardship on stress, alienation, and ...

Barriers To Interorganizational Relationships: A Comparative Analysis , Thomas Jefferson Hoban Iv Jan 1986

Barriers To Interorganizational Relationships: A Comparative Analysis , Thomas Jefferson Hoban Iv

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The problem of soil erosion persists despite 50 years of public programs, costing over 20 billion. This study approaches this problem by examining the frequency of interaction among organizations involved in promoting soil conservation and providing farmers with assistance. Interorganizational relationships (IOR) are thought to have an important influence on the effectiveness of local conservation programs;Relationships among four federal (USDA) agencies involved with soil conservation at the local (county) level are studied: the Soil Conservation Service (SCS), the Cooperative Extension Service (CES); the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS), and the Farmer's Home Administration (FmHA). Telephone interviews with ...

Analysis Of Feeder Cattle-Corn-Fed Cattle Market Arbitrage Profit Opportunities And Pricing Strategy Alternatives , Ted Conrad Schroeder Jan 1986

Analysis Of Feeder Cattle-Corn-Fed Cattle Market Arbitrage Profit Opportunities And Pricing Strategy Alternatives , Ted Conrad Schroeder

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The financial risks associated with cattle feeding have increased substantially in recent years. Returns have been highly volatile and frequently low. Cattle feeders have available a number of marketing alternatives which they can use to help reduce price risks for major inputs such as corn and feeder cattle and for the final production of fed cattle. These alternatives include futures markets for these 3 commodities as well as options markets for corn and fed cattle. However, with the numerous marketing alternatives available to the producer the marketing decision can be complex. One tool that can aid the producer in making ...

Convicted Offenders' Vocabulary Of Motive: Truth Or Consequences , Melvin C. Ray Jan 1986

Convicted Offenders' Vocabulary Of Motive: Truth Or Consequences , Melvin C. Ray

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is composed of two research papers. The first paper analyzes the accounts of a sample (n = 25) of convicted murderers. The results show that offenders employ either justifications (i.e., self-defense or victim precipitated violence) or excuses (i.e., alcohol and drugs, stressful life-events, or social influence) to explain their violent behavior. The second paper examines inmates' perceptions regarding the importance of selected social factors (i.e., blocked opportunities, criminal labels, criminal value orientation, parental abuse, and alcohol/drugs) to explain their criminal behavior. Additionally, the analysis was designed to determine the extent to which the offenders' importance ...

The Economic Production Potential For Fresh Summer Fruits And Vegetables In Iowa's Commercial Wholesale Market With An Emphasis On Small Farms , Mark Richard Weimar

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Fresh summertime commercial wholesale fruits and vegetables are profitable alternatives for Iowa's traditional corn and soybean crops. This study provides information on the cost advantage Iowa producers hold over their current competitors in 13 fresh fruits and vegetables: broccoli, snap beans, cabbage, sweet corn, cucumbers, muskmelons, leaf lettuce, green peppers, tablestock potatoes, winter and summer squashes, tomatoes, and watermelons; The study, using linear programming with grid linearization, identifies Iowa's import substitution potential in a spatial equilibrium framework. An important focus of this study was delineating the monthly marketing periods and their associated prices and quantities. In addition, three ...

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the effect of change in economic condition on families in their middle years in the nine-state North Central Region of the United States during 1979-1982. The relationships between economic changes, reported income adequacy, symptoms of stress, and economizing behavior are studied. The data include 1236 families.;Demographic and socioeconomic control variables were age of wife, employment of husband and wife, family size and family income. Reported change in income, overall financial condition, and income adequacy are the sum of responses obtained from both husband and wife. Family symptomology is measured by the Family Health Status Inventory. Economizing ...

Equilibrium, Interest And Money: Three Essays In The History Of Economic Theory , Michael Syron Lawlor Jan 1986

Equilibrium, Interest And Money: Three Essays In The History Of Economic Theory , Michael Syron Lawlor

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The dissertation consists of three essays that utilize the historical record to shed light on contemporary theoretical problems. Essay I compares the most developed views of the equilibrium of physical systems, General Systems Theory, with the standard Walrasian concept of equilibrium used in economics. The contrast shows the Walrasian system to exhibit a contradiction. From the General Systems standpoint, it confuses the requirements of an open and a closed system. Drawing on Hayek's work, this confusion is traced to the lack of a good social-level homeostatic mechanism, and is shown to result from the traditional "auctioneer" device;Essay II ...

Endogenous Rates Of Time Preference In Monetary Growth Models: Stability And Comparative Dynamics , Omar M. Abdel-Razeq Jan 1986

Endogenous Rates Of Time Preference In Monetary Growth Models: Stability And Comparative Dynamics , Omar M. Abdel-Razeq

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Two optimal monetary growth models are analyzed. In the first (Model C), the rate of time preference is assumed constant; and in the other (Model V) the rate of time preference is endogenous; In Model C, the constancy of the rate of time preference is found to drive the long-run super-neutrality of money in the model. Changes in (theta), the growth rate of money supply, have no long-run effects on the real sector. The long-run capital-labor ratio is such that its marginal product is the sum of the rate of time preference, the growth rate of the population, and the ...

Three Articles Concerning Risk Management In The Meat Industry , Dennis Duane Dipietre Jan 1986

Three Articles Concerning Risk Management In The Meat Industry , Dennis Duane Dipietre

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Formulating strategies to mitigate price risk has become a major concern for meat industry managers. Increased price volatility and the demand for fixed price commitments from large buyers present wholesalers with growing challenges to remaining both competitive and profitable; The first two articles examine cross-hedging as a potential means to hedge price risks for beef and pork products (respectively) which do not have a corresponding futures contract. Hedging ratios are developed using simple linear regression techniques for a variety of commonly purchased meat products. An estimation and description of the basis risk involved in hedging these products is also presented ...

Factors Affecting Operative Goal Effectiveness Among Regional Councils Of Government , Gary David Nelson Jan 1986

Factors Affecting Operative Goal Effectiveness Among Regional Councils Of Government , Gary David Nelson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates factors that may explain regional council operative goal effectiveness. Regional council operative goals are viewed as the critical tasks and activities performed by the council. Three regional council policy council roles and three professional staff activities represent the dependent variables. Regional council effectiveness on these roles and activities is evaluated by local government officials.;Three models of organizational effectiveness, the operative goal, systems resource, and participant satisfaction, are used to develop an explanation of regional council effectiveness. Together, these models suggest that regional council operative goal effectiveness is an outcome of resources exchanged between regional councils and ...

Rational Price Expectations And Structural Change In The Us Broiler Industry , Dayo O.A Phillip Jan 1986

Rational Price Expectations And Structural Change In The Us Broiler Industry , Dayo O.A Phillip

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The study broadly investigates the econometric implications of the rational price expectations hypothesis with three alternative formulations of the U.S. broiler market model, each of which was already biologically restricted in terms of the structural equations describing broiler supply. Each of the three alternative structural models reflects a different assumption about the nature of vertical integration in the broiler industry; Each model was estimated in its restricted and unrestricted form. Resulting estimates of regression coefficients were, in most cases, consistent with economic theory predictions and statistically significant. The elasticities of response of the various broiler production activities with respect ...

A County-Level Analysis Of American Fertility In Relation To Social Change: The Case Of The North Central Region In 1980 , Yousry Abdel-Hamid Raslan Jan 1986

A County-Level Analysis Of American Fertility In Relation To Social Change: The Case Of The North Central Region In 1980 , Yousry Abdel-Hamid Raslan

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The relationship between development as a process of social change and American fertility on the county level is at issue in this study. It is assumed that while all American counties are at a certain high level of development, different counties might have different potential for development. A specific question, therefore, is: are the counties different in the levels of development?, and if they are, how is development related to fertility variations among counties?;The conceptual framework of the structural-functional approach, namely the Parsonian perspective on social change and the main tenet of the demographic transition theory were adapted to ...

Macro-Econometric Analysis Of The Effects Of Domestic Credit Conditions And Monetary Innovations On Agriculture By Vector-Autoregression Methods: United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, And Nigeria , T.A Sanni Jan 1986

Macro-Econometric Analysis Of The Effects Of Domestic Credit Conditions And Monetary Innovations On Agriculture By Vector-Autoregression Methods: United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, And Nigeria , T.A Sanni

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Sections I, II, and IV of this dissertation contain rigorous empirical evidence on the impacts of domestic credit conditions, proxied by money supply on agricultural aggregates. All the sections employ unconstrained vector autoregression methods. Section III employs a maximum likelihood estimation procedure to identify more parsimonious models confirming earlier contentions of the importance of money on Australian agriculture.
