A Longitudinal Model Of Residential Mobility , Jean Ann Memken Jan 1984

A Longitudinal Model Of Residential Mobility , Jean Ann Memken

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, the relationships among various housing and household characteristics are examined to discover how they relate to each other and to residential mobility. A model of residential mobility is developed and then used to analyze the differential effects on moves of differing order. Event history data were divided into yearly segments and were analyzed using probit procedures. Results support the theory of housing adjustment. Increases in household size in the previous year lead to negative bedroom deficits in the present year. Underlying explanatory variables of bedroom deficit include age at marriage and education of the female, time, months ...

Effects Of Interpersonal Touch On Clients' Perceptions Of Counselors And The Counseling Interaction, Janilee Beth Wheaton Jan 1984

Effects Of Interpersonal Touch On Clients' Perceptions Of Counselors And The Counseling Interaction, Janilee Beth Wheaton

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The major purposes of this study were: (a) to discover whether or not interpersonal touch between counselors and clients affects client perceptions of counselor attractiveness and credibility and leads to greater counselor influence ability which would be predicted from Strong's (1968) social influence model, and (b) to replicate previous research showing that counselors who touch are not perceived as more sexual than counselors who do not touch. Counselor physical attractiveness and client comfort with touch were included in the experimental design as covariates; The subjects for this experiment were 119 female and 95 male undergraduates who were randomly assigned ...

A Medium-Term Multi-Sectoral Dynamic Simulation Model Of The Indonesian Economy , Sri-Bintang Pamungkas Jan 1984

A Medium-Term Multi-Sectoral Dynamic Simulation Model Of The Indonesian Economy , Sri-Bintang Pamungkas

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This thesis represents an attempt to build a medium-term simulation model of the Indonesian economy within a comparatively disaggregated general equilibrium frame. This model has been constructed in order to study the overall development performance of the economy between 1966 and 1985, based on annual data available between 1966 and 1980. The Indonesian model of the economy is directed to explore the growth potential of the economy as well as the effect on income distribution, employment, and poverty during the period indicated above; The model consists of a model of economic growth and a policy model so that the process ...

U. S. Monetary Policy And The Exchange Rate: Effects On The World Coarse Grain Market , Massoud Said Mark Denbaly Jan 1984

U. S. Monetary Policy And The Exchange Rate: Effects On The World Coarse Grain Market , Massoud Said Mark Denbaly

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

During the 1950s and 1960s, the United States benefited from relatively stable monetary policy. This stability largely reflected the weaknesses of monetary policy as a domestic policy tool under the prevailing international monetary system of fixed exchange rates. Consequently, the relationship between the agricultural sector and monetary policy was not obvious, well-understood, or perhaps even significant; The general concern of this study is the effect of U.S. monetary policy on the U.S. and world agricultural markets. The specific objectives are to investigate the nature of U.S. monetary policy between 1960 and 1980, to investigate the channels through ...

An Economic Analysis Of Resource And Income Uses Among Farm Households Of Ethiopia: Application Of Household Production Model , Tesfaye Teklu Jan 1984

An Economic Analysis Of Resource And Income Uses Among Farm Households Of Ethiopia: Application Of Household Production Model , Tesfaye Teklu

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

One of the chief economic features of family based farms is the practice of joint-production-consumption activities. This is particularly evident in our study of selected villages in Ethiopia. Here, a great proportion of the working age farm population participates in crop and livestock production activities. Typically, a family furnishes the bulk of its resources--land and labor--to the production of food crops. The choice of crops is often dictated by food consumption habits and the structure of resource endowments. The income generated from these activities is used largely to finance the family's ordered consumption goals.;The realization of such joint ...

Ability To Discriminate And Pronounce Foreign Language Phonemes As A Function Of Age, Maria J. Correa Jan 1984

Ability To Discriminate And Pronounce Foreign Language Phonemes As A Function Of Age, Maria J. Correa

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Fifty native English speakers (ages: 3, 9, 11 and adults) were asked to discriminate and pronounce Spanish words. The Wepman Auditory Discrimination Test was administered to the subjects to assess their discrimination abilities in their native language. A training session using English pairs of words showed that five-year-olds improved in their discrimination abilities after training but three-year-olds did not. Pronunciation was scored by two native Spanish speakers. Analyses revealed that older subjects pronounced the Spanish words significantly better than did younger subjects. Similar results were obtained for the analyses of Spanish phoneme pronunciation. Moreover, analyses of discrimination abilities on the ...

The Efficacy Of A Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment Aimed At Relapse Prevention In Smokers , Vickie Rae Gregory Jan 1984

The Efficacy Of A Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment Aimed At Relapse Prevention In Smokers , Vickie Rae Gregory

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Although multicomponent smoking treatments have demonstrated an impressive decline in smoking during the treatment, long-term maintenance of nonsmoking behavior continues to be problematic. Most of the treatments have addressed this problem by enhancing the cessation interventions. In contrast, this study investigated the efficacy of a structured maintenance package, which incorporated the Relapse Prevention model, when compared to a maintenance package using group support and contingency contracting. Two cessation interventions were also employed in the current study (nicotine fading and aversion).;Seventy-nine smokers participated in the present study. Although no significant differences emerged between the maintenance treatments, evidence supported the effectiveness ...

The Cost Structure Of U.S. Railroad Industry, 1980-81 , Tenpao Lee Jan 1984

The Cost Structure Of U.S. Railroad Industry, 1980-81 , Tenpao Lee

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The proposed Coal Rate Guidelines published by the Interstate Commerce Commission imply that the railroad industry can raise rates on the so called "captive" coal to achieve the goal of revenue adequacy. Revenue adequacy is defined as a level of earnings sufficient to enable a carrier to meet all of its expenses, retire a reasonable amount of debt, cover plant depreciation and obsolescence, and earn a return on investment adequate to attract new capital. If the proposed Coal Rate Guidelines are implemented on coal traffic, it is expected that similar guidelines will be applied to other so called "captive" commodities ...

The Projected Impact Of Inland Waterway User Charges On Grain Flows And Transport Costs In 1990 , Jeffrey R. Beaulieu Jan 1984

The Projected Impact Of Inland Waterway User Charges On Grain Flows And Transport Costs In 1990 , Jeffrey R. Beaulieu

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The Inland Waterway Revenue Act of 1978 (Public Law 95-502) established a surcharge on fuel consumed in the transportation of commodities by commercial inland waterway users. Initiated at four cents per gallon on October 1, 1980 the surcharge is scheduled to increase to ten cents per gallon by the 1985 navigation season. Revenues generated from the user tax have been earmarked to finance the maintenance and operations of existing navigation structures and practices and to defray the cost of current and planned construction. The legislated level of taxation, however, is insufficient to recover the total expenditures associated with these categories ...

Predicting Outcome Of Paradoxical And Self-Control Intervenetions From Resistance And Freedom Of The Target Behavior Among Procrastinators , Sandra Lou Davis Jan 1984

Predicting Outcome Of Paradoxical And Self-Control Intervenetions From Resistance And Freedom Of The Target Behavior Among Procrastinators , Sandra Lou Davis

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This counseling analogue study compared the effectiveness of paradoxical and self-control interventions upon self-reported procrastination behavior among high school students. Fifty-eight subjects were classified according to double median splits on the dimensions of freedom or controllability of the procrastination behavior and resistance, operationalized as relatively negative attitudes and expectations about counselors in general. The resultant four treatment groups were as follows: high resistance, high freedom; high resistance, low freedom; low resistance, high freedom; and low resistance, low freedom. Subjects within these groups were randomly assigned to one of three types of treatment conditions: paradoxical interviews, self-control interviews, or no treatment ...

Measuring Structural Characteristics Of Community Fields: A Case Study , Bradley Jay Anderson Jan 1984

Measuring Structural Characteristics Of Community Fields: A Case Study , Bradley Jay Anderson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Empirical techniques to measure structural characteristics of community action are presented. Community field theory is used to conceptually describe community action structures. Community fields are defined as emergent social structures through which local action becomes coordinated to meet broad community objectives;Network analysis, a method for studying structures of social relationships, is shown to be highly concordant with community field theory. Two distinct types of network analysis models are illustrated using data collected in a central Iowa community; One model measures the degree to which special interest fields in the local society are coordinated with one another. Coordination is studied ...

Two Statistical Analysis Procedures Applied To Multivariate Smoking Cessation Data , Paul Gerard Mcgovern Jan 1984

Two Statistical Analysis Procedures Applied To Multivariate Smoking Cessation Data , Paul Gerard Mcgovern

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The field of smoking cessation research is plagued by inconsistent findings, caused in part by inadequate methodological or statistical analysis procedures. These problems are more serious in the case of smoking cessation treatments administered to groups of individuals; The effectiveness of two treatments is compared: an aversive smoking procedure followed by a maintenance phase (AM); and a nicotine fading procedure followed by the same maintenance phase (NM). Also, the benefits of being randomly selected to treatment (RS) versus self-selecting treatment (SS) are compared. Treatment was administered to groups of individuals, and groups differed in size from 2 to 17 participants ...

The Distribution Impact Of The Social Security Program, 1962-1972 , Nancy Lee Wolff Jan 1984

The Distribution Impact Of The Social Security Program, 1962-1972 , Nancy Lee Wolff

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigated the effect of old age insurance (OAI) benefits on the distribution of lifetime income for persons retiring between 1961 and 1973. An actuarial standard of fairness was employed to assess the direction of redistribution and the extent to which the OAI program redistributed income across subgroups comprising the retirement cohort. It was hypothesized that socioeconomic status influenced the absolute size of the redistributional component because of differential survivorship rates and the differential treatment of certain identifiable groups, such as women, nonworking persons age 65-71, traditional family structures, and low-income household units. In addition, the distributional consequences of ...

Black's Perception Of Blacks And Whites In Relation To The Expression Or Inhibition Of Anger, Charlie W. Johnson Jan 1984

Black's Perception Of Blacks And Whites In Relation To The Expression Or Inhibition Of Anger, Charlie W. Johnson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The present research was concerned with examining the presence of anger in black subjects and determining if and how the experience of anger influences their perceptions of other blacks as well as whites. The hypotheses underlying the present research were: (1) Blacks who inhibit anger (anger inhibited) would exhibit a greater likelihood of viewing whites positively while viewing blacks in a more negative fashion; (2) Blacks who express anger (anger expressed) would exhibit a greater likelihood of viewing blacks more positively while viewing whites in a more negative fashion; (3) Differences were anticipated in the ratings of black vis-a-vis white ...
