A Factor Analytic Comparison Of The Work Values Of Divergent Groups, Janette A. Hankins Oct 1982

A Factor Analytic Comparison Of The Work Values Of Divergent Groups, Janette A. Hankins

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A new concept in motivation has recently been devised: that of work values. The Work Values Inventory (WVI) developed by Donald E. Super (1970) was used to test five hypotheses: (1) The underlying work value structures of persons will not vary according to age; (2) The underlying work value structures of persons will not vary according to sex; (3) The underlying work value structures of persons will vary according to level (undergraduate, master's degree students, or post-master's degree); (4) The underlying work value structures of college students will vary according to whether they are a psychology major or ...

The Influence Of Group Cohesion On The Behavioral Treatment Of Smoking , Bruce Dennis Etringer Jan 1982

The Influence Of Group Cohesion On The Behavioral Treatment Of Smoking , Bruce Dennis Etringer

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The influence of therapeutic relationship variables in behavioral interventions, and specifically in the treatment of chronic smoking behavior, have not been systematically investigated. The present study attempted to assess the influence of one relationship variable, group cohesion, on the behavioral treatment packages of smoking, satiation and nicotine fading. Group cohesion was manipulated by incorporating several structured interventions (contracting, modeling, and behavioral practice of self-disclosure and feedback) into half of the smoking treatment groups. The treatment groups receiving the structured interventions showed a significantly higher level of group cohesion than the groups that did not experience them. The cohesion interventions had ...

Assessment Of One's Former Marriage And Adjustment Of Divorced Persons: A Study In Resocialization , Phillip David Holley Jan 1982

Assessment Of One's Former Marriage And Adjustment Of Divorced Persons: A Study In Resocialization , Phillip David Holley

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The research used the Berger and Luckmann (1966) treatment of alternations--radical life changes--to examine divorce. The relationship between present adjustment of divorced persons and retrospective assessments of their former marriage was examined. It was hypothesized that divorced persons make negative assessments of their former marriage, and these assessments are related to adjustment. It further proposed that associational relationships provide support for these assessments. The model indicated that retrospective assessments are related to abandonment of the former spouse and involvement with a new intimate, which is related to adjustment; The respondents included 87 divorced persons, whose divorces were granted between January ...

Development And Application Of A Multiperiod Linear Programming Model For Water Management In The Willcox Basin, Arizona , Ali Ali Omar Ramadan Jan 1982

Development And Application Of A Multiperiod Linear Programming Model For Water Management In The Willcox Basin, Arizona , Ali Ali Omar Ramadan

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Water for irrigation in the Willcox Basin, Arizona, is scarce and the water table is declining. Water pumping costs are increasing as a result of such a decline; The objectives of this study are: (1) to develop a multiperiod linear programming model; and (2) to apply the model to data from the area of study for the purposes of (a) providing a basis for allocating water in the area of study at the highest present value net returns over time, and (b) appraising selected policy options as means for achieving the above water allocation objective. The model consists of linear ...

Tatonnement Modeling With Linear Programming: Demand And Supply For Some United States Crops In 2000 , Raymond Joe Schatzer Jan 1982

Tatonnement Modeling With Linear Programming: Demand And Supply For Some United States Crops In 2000 , Raymond Joe Schatzer

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

During the last decade, two concerns have been raised about the future of U.S. crop production. These concerns are: (a) Will the United States have enough land available in the future that is suitable for crop production? and (b) What will future crop yields be? Future U.S. crop production is highly dependent upon both these issues; The real problem may not be the quantity of future crop production, but rather the price of the quantity that is available. The development of a model to answer this question is one of the objectives of this study. The other objective ...

International Trade In Commodities And Labor: The Case Of The Importation Of Mexican Agricultural Labor And Fresh Market Winter Tomatoes Into The Us, 1964-1979 , Steven John Torok Jan 1982

International Trade In Commodities And Labor: The Case Of The Importation Of Mexican Agricultural Labor And Fresh Market Winter Tomatoes Into The Us, 1964-1979 , Steven John Torok

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Currently, the United States is experiencing one of its most rapid periods of immigration in recent history, even though the Immigration Act of 1965 has established a quota of allowing approximately 120,000 legal Western hemisphere immigrants each year. The apparent paradox of rapid immigration in times of strict immigration legislation is due to the large numbers of Mexicans that are immigrating illegally to the United States and entering the labor force each year; The objectives of this study are: (1) To develop a 2-country, 1-commodity, 1-factor extended partial equilibrium trade model that will explain immigration and commodity and labor ...

The Upstream Approach In The Employee Assistance Program Concept, Raymond M. Thornton Jan 1982

The Upstream Approach In The Employee Assistance Program Concept, Raymond M. Thornton

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The employee assistance program (EAP) concept in industry is defined and examined in this paper. Stress is defined and its impact on the individual and the organization is examined. The development of a preventative model of an EAP which utilizes stress management techniques to prevent human suffering and lost company time is discussed. One of the main purposes of this research report is to propose that individuals with "Type A" behavior patterns who are taught stress management techniques will have significantly lower scores on physiological measures, stress measures, role conflict and role ambiguity measures than those Type A individuals who ...

Feed Grains Imports And Pricing In The European Economic Community , Shida Rastegari Jan 1982

Feed Grains Imports And Pricing In The European Economic Community , Shida Rastegari

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The E.E.C. has played an important role in the world feed grains' trade over the past two decades. Some argue that without the E.E.C. Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), the volume of E.E.C. feed grains' imports from non-member countries would have been even larger. One of the most important elements of the CAP is the "target price" towards which the common E.E.C. market price should tend and which is supposed to provide a fair return to the producers; The main objective of this study is to develop an economic rationale for past E ...

Further Search For The Missing Money , Mohammadreza Shojaeddini Jan 1982

Further Search For The Missing Money , Mohammadreza Shojaeddini

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The conventional form of the demand function for money worked very well in the past. However, since 1974 this function has failed to predict the public's demand for the money stock within a reasonable range of error. More specifically, since 1976 the conventional equation has overpredicted the actual quantity of money demanded. Although the Federal Reserve's newly defined monetary aggregates generally have better prediction performance than the old M-1, they show a systematic overprediction of money stock for the period of 1974:1-1980:3, the out-of-sample period in this study. The cumulative percentage errors of prediction of these ...

The Development Of A New Work Construct: Work Conscientiousness , Judy Beth Stein Jan 1982

The Development Of A New Work Construct: Work Conscientiousness , Judy Beth Stein

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this study was to develop and validate a scale to measure a new work construct: work conscientiousness. Work conscientiousness reflects pride and ego involvement in one's work and the motivation to perform a task well in the absence of external rewards (e.g., pay, promotions, status). This three part study consisted of the scale development, the assessment of discriminant validity and the assessment of construct validity. The first part of the study had four hundred and thirty-four Ss complete a 200 item work attitude survey. A factor analysis defined three factors: work conscientiousness (34 items), workaholism ...

The Impact Of Participation In An Oral History Project On Adolescents' Attitudes Toward Old People , Sylvia Ashley-Cameron Jan 1982

The Impact Of Participation In An Oral History Project On Adolescents' Attitudes Toward Old People , Sylvia Ashley-Cameron

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This research project is an evaluation of a program in which adolescents (N = 17) interview elderly people for the purpose of documenting their life stories. The comparison group (N = 17) consisted of students in a poetry class at the same school; The independent variables were group membership, sex of subject, and prior experience with the aged. The difference scores obtained by subtracting pre-test scores from post-test scores on the dependent variables were grouped into two subsets, personal development and attitudes toward old people measures. These two subsets were analyzed using a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial MANOVA;The first ...

The Impact Of The Us/Mexico Border Region And Concentrations Of Mexican-Americans On Mexican-American Earnings , Alberto E. Davila Jan 1982

The Impact Of The Us/Mexico Border Region And Concentrations Of Mexican-Americans On Mexican-American Earnings , Alberto E. Davila

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to investigate the determinants of geographic wage differentials as they apply particularly to Mexican-Americans. Two questions are asked. (1) Is there a U.S./Mexico border/nonborder wage differential? (2) Are compensating wage differentials important in the wage structure of Mexican-Americans?;The first question has already been addressed in the literature, but the analysis suggested in this study overcomes some of the potential problems found in earlier studies. The second question analyzes the possibility of compensating wage differentials (in the context of the Hedonic Model) that could be due to either the distance that ...

A Quadratic Programming Model Of The Selected Crops Of Thailand , Prasit Itharattana Jan 1982

A Quadratic Programming Model Of The Selected Crops Of Thailand , Prasit Itharattana

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Sector analysis models have been developed in Thailand for providing policy recommendations to decision makers in the Fourth Five Year Development Plan (1977-1981) to raise the income level in the farm sector. In the agricultural sector, linear programming models with fixed estimated demand levels were constructed. The assumption of fixed level of demand will result in an error in estimating both the final level of demand and equilibrium price if the demand for the final product is not perfectly inelastic; The objective of this research is to develop a quadratic programming model of interregional competition which permits dealing with continuous ...

Potential Price Variability In The Us Grain And Livestock Sector In The 1980s Under Alternative Policy Scenarios: An Econometric Approach , Andrew Scott Morton Jan 1982

Potential Price Variability In The Us Grain And Livestock Sector In The 1980s Under Alternative Policy Scenarios: An Econometric Approach , Andrew Scott Morton

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study utilizes an annual structural econometric model of the U.S. grain and livestock sector to simulate market price instability resulting from potential fluctuations in domestic crop yields and demand for U.S. grain exports over 1981-90. The policy alternatives examined are a continuation of post-1977 grains policy and management strategy (PA I); elimination of grain policy programs (PA II); replacement of the existing farmer-owned reserve program (FOR) with an FOR equivalent subsidy to private commercial storage at any price (PA III); and continuation of post-1977 grains policy without authority to implement acreage reduction programs (PA IV);Results from ...
