This study examined whether there were relationships between students' perceptions of course-related interaction and their course satisfaction within the learner-centered paradigm in distance education. The incarnation of many Internet-based courses is informed by traditional notions of classroom instruction, in which course/content management systems (CMSs) like WebCT and Blackboard are used to reproduce actions undertaken in brick-and-mortar classrooms. In this dissertation I argue that the way in which the CMS is configured and deployed can provide students with the sense that they are immersed in a social activity other than taking a college course. Can a succinct "synopsis" laboratory report format provide students with an equivalent learning experience to the lengthier, introduction/results/conclusion, "traditional" laboratory report format? A convenience sample of 56 Iowa State University industrial technology students was randomized into two groups; one was required to write five synopsis reports followed by four traditional reports and the other was required to write five traditional reports followed by four synopsis reports. Distance education and web-based courses are now mainstream in the U.S. higher education involving over 80% of four year public universities and growing (NCES, 2003). This study investigated the relationships between students' characteristics and their perception of web-based learning and satisfaction with distance learning in five Web-based undergraduate biology courses in a Midwestern university. In the debate over the impact of technology and instructional methods on student learner outcomes, there has been no clear winner. This study utilized path analysis techniques to examine these effects. Data was gathered from 6 middle school mathematics classes including 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students (N = 372). Discriminant analysis showed significant differences between the groups, but the model elements captured that variance well enough to predict group membership correctly 82% of the time.
