110- Geophysical And Archaeological Survey Of Lake Bluff Park, St. Joseph, Michigan, Michael Nassaney, William Sauck

Reports of Investigations

Geophysical and archaeological surveys were conducted in a segment of Lake Bluff Park immediately west of Lake Boulevard in St. Joseph, Michigan during Fall 2005. The surveys were conducted because background research had indicated the potential for archaeological remains in the project area, particularly the construction of Fort Miami in the vicinity in 1679 and encounters with human burials along the bluff edge in the nineteenth century. The City of St. Joseph requested the survey to avoid disturbing potentially significant subsurface remains during excavations to replace utility lines beneath Lake Boulevard.

On 16 Jul 94, authorization (P.O. #35356) was received from the Office of County Controller for a Phase I archaeological survey of the proposed ADA upgrade at Coldbrook Park in Section 34 of Charleston Township (T2S R9W), Kalamazoo County, Michigan. A literature and site file search was initiated, and on 18 Jul onsite evaluation of the project area was undertaken in order to determine whether the proposed construction activity would adversely impact potentially significant archaeological resources.

In the Fall of 1992, Mr. Mark Horn contacted the Anthropology Department at Western Michigan University regarding property he owns in Allegan County, Michigan. In his assessment, this property exhibited a significant amount of prehistoric cultural material on the surface, and he felt that it might warrant formalized archaeological investigation. Additionally, Mr. Horn, a school teacher in Allegan, asked about the possibility of including his stndents in any future fieldwork that might be conducted on his property. In 1989, I received a call from Cheryl Lyon-Jenness of the Kalamazoo Public Museum who requested that I examine a collection of Historic Period Indian artifacts that museum personnel desired to prepare for exhibition. She informed me that the museum had purchased the collection from an area resident same years ago and that the documentation surrounding the purchase suggested that it had been retrieved from an Indian burial ground on the Kalamazoo River.

The Schwartz (11-J-812; 2482-185) and Copeland (11-~-818; 2482-185E) sites are single component early Late Woodland encampments located in the Westfield Extension of Consolidation Coel Company's Burning Star Mine #5 in northeastern Jackson County, Illinois. The Westfield lies within but near the southern terminus of the Mt. Vernon Hill Country of the Southern Till Plains Division and is characterized by mature topography and low relief (Schwegman 1975). Elevation in the study area ranges from approximately 108 m ASL along the Little Muddy River, the principal stream passing through the Westfield, to 120 m ASL on adjacent uplands. The Tanner's Ridge archaeological survey was carried out at the request of Mr. Warren Burke, following a series of telephone conversations and correspondence with the Bureau of History, Michigan Department of State, during the summer and fall of 1987. The author's prior archaeological work (Garland 1984) In the immediate vicinity of the planned resort area suggested the high probability of prehistoric sites at this locale, particularly at elevations above the 100 year flood line.

The WestField Extension oF Consolidation Coal Company's Burning Star Mine #5 is situated in the Little Muddy River drainage oF northeastern Jackson County, Illinois. It is located within but very near the southern terminus oF the Mt. Vernon Hill Country of the Southern Till Plains Division, with its characteristic mature topography and low relieF, and includes a 4.5 km long segment oF the lower river valley and an area oF uplands lying to the west of the river.
