- Landscape architecture studio of ten 5th year students
- Use of physical library ranges from 1- 30 times/month
- Use of virtual library ranges from 2-30x/month
- Compared to others in School of Architecture use is moderate
- They self-rate as average or above average on library skills, compared to their peers
Developing A Library Value Indicator For A Disciplinary Population, Jeanne M. Brown
Developing A Library Value Indicator For A Disciplinary Population, Jeanne M. Brown
Library Faculty Presentations
Three different ways of documenting library value were presented to fourth year landscape architecture students in the UNLV School of Architecture: a contingent valuation survey, a library calculator, and a survey to rate importance and impact of library services and features. Students used the three approaches, then discussed their experiences with the author. Their input suggested improvements in the instruments and provided feedback on possible positive and negative consequences of inviting this kind of valuing. Working with a focused collection and population provided a relatively safe environment to explore concerns about negative consequences.

• Should there be an overarching philosophy for user-generated content in the organization?
• Who in the management or leadership determines this philosophy or guides the organization to come up with a shared vision?
•What technical considerations are there for these projects? Are there staff that need to be consulted for software choices and technical customization?
•Is there are point person for the project and does this person have the authority and appropriate expertise to moderate content and respond to user’s contributions?
•Should there be appropriate guidelines for communicating an institutions’ brand or message in these new venues?
•And ultimately, …

Tales From The Field: The Right Mix Of Theory, Practice, And Soft Skills For Educating Digital Library Leaders, Cory K. Lampert, Krystyna Matusiak
Library Faculty Presentations
Technology skills have entered the LIS curriculum, but an overlooked variable in employability is often the perception of graduates’ soft skills. Communication skills, consensus-building and strategic thinking are critical to employers and by integrating coursework, internship experience, and networking opportunities as part of the core educational experience new graduates can set themselves apart as they enter the workforce. Research shows that programs that most effectively prepare future digital librarians are those that complement theory with interdisciplinary practice by developing partnerships and offer mentoring opportunities. This paper presents two perspectives identifying strategies to help develop leadership skills for the digital library …
Collaborating With Faculty To "Start Up" An Open Access Journal, Marianne A. Buehler
Collaborating With Faculty To "Start Up" An Open Access Journal, Marianne A. Buehler
Library Faculty Presentations
University faculty have ongoing pressure to publish their research findings and teaching successes and produce scholarship worthy of tenure. Acceptance to publish an article in a journal can be highly competitive and in some fields of study, there are few journal publication options. With the advent of open access (OA) publishing opportunities, academic libraries are fulfilling a need by supporting sustainable models of scholarly communication that include collaborating with faculty and editors to “start up” an OA journal or convert a traditional print journal to OA. Some faculty would prefer to transcend the traditional publishing model and may not be …
Building Faculty Capacity For Better Teaching And Learning, L Dee Fink, Patricia A. Iannuzzi
Building Faculty Capacity For Better Teaching And Learning, L Dee Fink, Patricia A. Iannuzzi
Library Faculty Presentations
Enhancing faculty capacity for teaching in ways that promote greater levels of student engagement and significant learning is an essential part of all other institutional changes designed to advance higher quality student learning. In this session, participants will lay out a general strategy for campus leaders to cultivate that faculty capability and then identify specific actions needed to implement such a strategy. Participants will also identify key elements of effective teaching and learning centers and brainstorm ways to build a teaching- and learning-centered institutional culture.

Mapping Information Literacy Outcomes And Other Intellectual Skills Into Students' Educational Experiences, Patricia A. Iannuzzi, L Dee Fink
Library Faculty Presentations
The 2007 report, College Learning for the New Global Century, outlines a cluster of intellectual and practical skills that are critical components of a liberal education: inquiry and analysis; critical and creative thinking; written and oral communication; quantitative literacy; information literacy; and teamwork and problem solving. The learning outcomes associated with information literacy relate to and incorporate many of the learning outcomes in all of these skill clusters. Participants in this session will address how these information literacy and related learning outcomes can be mapped into student learning experiences at three levels: in an individual course, in an academic sequence …

Delta Project On Postsecondary Costs, Productivity, And Accountability: A Campus Perspective – University Of Nevada, Las Vegas, Patricia A. Iannuzzi
Library Faculty Presentations
I will start by pointing out that I don’t completely agree with Director Wellman’s conclusions that it’s a horrible state of affairs when investments from tuition and state sources are misdirected to support non‐instruction infrastructure. As a research university with aspirations of enhancing its research agenda, in a state that desperately needs that research UNLV expects to grow those support services in order to grow its research initiatives, and thereby contribute in meaningful ways to the reinvention of the Nevada economy – one sorely hampered by its single industry focus. The Delta Project data calls into question the relationship of …

Designing The Born-Digital Archive, Michelle Light
Library Faculty Presentations
Light spoke generally about the major issues facing archivists who manage born digital records and how the UCI Libraries responded when providing access to the Richard Rorty papers. She discussed the challenges, such as dealing with rapid technological change, ensure present and future accessibility of legacy files, managing privacy and copyrights, guaranteeing the authenticity and integrity of files, preventing loss and destruction, and selecting the most important material for preservation. She also discussed numerous decisions archivists make that impact the future archive, such as emulation or preservation of the original computing environment, the organization of files, the migration of materials …

Oral History On The Web, Tom D. Sommer
Library Faculty Presentations
This session will examine how oral history is increasing its relevance in a changing digital landscape. This session will not only showcase a few oral history collections currently online, but how oral historians can place them there. Further, this session will explain the basic steps to uploading your interviews (audio, video and transcriptions) to the Web with some practical tools. This session will also showcase a new method of access for oral history researchers. This new method is the digital collection. For example, the University Libraries at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas has created the digital collection entitled, “Nevada …
