Mammalian extinction worldwide during the Late Pleistocene has been a major focus for Quaternary biochronology and paleoecology. These extinctions have been variably attributed to the impacts of climate change and human interference. However, until relatively recently, research has been largely restricted to the Americas, Europe, and Australasia. We present the oldest Middle-Late Pleistocene stratified and numerically dated faunal succession for the Indian subcontinent from the Billasurgam cave complex. Our data demonstrate continuity of 20 of 21 identified mammalian taxa from at least 100,000 y ago to the present, and in some cases up to 200,000 y ago. Comparison of this …

Facial Approximation Of 'Angel': Case Specific Methodological Review, Susan Hayes

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

A forensic facial approximation is typically undertaken to generate further leads to identity of the deceased, and over the past ten years there has been a considerable increase in the number of verified relationships concerning the skull and likely facial appearance. This paper describes the evidence and methods used to approximate the face and facial features of a young woman whose remains were found in the Belanglo State Forest (New South Wales, Australia) in August 2010. A review of methodologically analogous forensic facial approximations (i.e. involving some degree of manual manipulation to achieve the results), and published in international academic …

Testing A Model Of Alluvial Deposition In The Middle Son Valley, Madhya Pradesh, India - Irsl Dating Of Terraced Alluvial Sediments And Implications For Archaeological Surveys And Palaeoclimatic Reconstructions, Christina M. Neudorf, Richard G. Roberts, Zenobia Jacobs Jan 2014

Roberts, Zenobia Jacobs

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Over the past three decades, the Middle Son Valley, Madhya Pradesh, India has been the focus of archaeological, geological, and palaeoenvironmental investigations that aim to reconstruct regional climate changes in the Late Pleistocene and to understand the effects of the ∼74 ka Toba super-eruption on ecosystems and human populations in northern India. The most recently published model of alluvial deposition for the Middle Son Valley subdivides its alluvium into five stratigraphic formations, each associated with a specific artefact assemblage. In this study, new cross-valley topographic profiles, field observations and infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) age estimates are used to refine this …

The Evolution Of A Terrace Sequence Along The Manas River In The Northern Foreland Basin Of Tian Shan, China, As Inferred From Optical Dating, Zhijun Gong, Sheng-Hua Li, Bo Li Jan 2014

The Evolution Of A Terrace Sequence Along The Manas River In The Northern Foreland Basin Of Tian Shan, China, As Inferred From Optical Dating, Zhijun Gong, Sheng-Hua Li, Bo Li

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

The Tian Shan range lies in the actively deforming part of the India-Asia collision zone. The uplift rate and deformation pattern of the Tian Shan are important for understanding the dynamics of crustal deformation in the region. The river terraces in northern Tian Shan provide key records of past changes in climate and/or regional tectonics. In this study, a terrace sequence along the Manas River in a tectonically active zone in the northern foreland basin of Tian Shan is investigated. Six river terraces were identified and dated using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL). The results show that the six terraces were …

A Single-Aliquot Luminescence Dating Procedure For K-Feldspar Based On The Dose-Dependent Met-Pirir Signal Sensitivity, Bo Li, Richard G. Roberts, Zenobia Jacobs, Sheng-Hua Li Jan 2014

A Single-Aliquot Luminescence Dating Procedure For K-Feldspar Based On The Dose-Dependent Met-Pirir Signal Sensitivity, Bo Li, Richard G. Roberts, Zenobia Jacobs, Sheng-Hua Li

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

It has been shown previously that the ‘sensitivity’ of the post-infrared infrared stimulated luminescence (post-IR IRSL or pIRIR) signal—that is, the intensity of the test dose signal (Tx)—can retain a ‘memory’ of the pre-dose received in nature, but can be reset by sunlight bleaching. Based on this observation, we describe here a single-aliquot regenerative-dose (SAR) multiple elevated temperature (MET) pIRIR dating procedure for K-feldspar that differs in one important respect from the conventional SAR MET-pIRIR procedure. Instead of using a high temperature IR bleaching step between each SAR cycle—as in the conventional procedure—our modified procedure uses a solar simulator bleach …

Assessing The Time Of Final Deposition Of Youngest Toba Tuff Deposits In The Middle Son Valley, Northern India, Christina M. Neudorf, Richard G. Roberts, Zenobia Jacobs Jan 2014

Assessing The Time Of Final Deposition Of Youngest Toba Tuff Deposits In The Middle Son Valley, Northern India, Christina M. Neudorf, Richard G. Roberts, Zenobia Jacobs

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

We present optical ages for quartz and K-feldspar grains extracted from sedimentary deposits above and below Youngest Toba Tuff (YTT) at two localities in the Middle Son Valley (MSV), Madhya Pradesh, India. These ash deposits have been the focus of past palaeoenvironmental investigations that aim to understand the effects of the ~ 74 ka Toba super-eruption on ecosystems and human populations in northern India. Age estimates from both quartz and feldspar grains post-date the Toba eruption and single-grain age distributions suggest that YTT ash-bearing sediments in the MSV are mainly composed of a mixture of recently sun-exposed, flood-transported grains and …
