The transient of a self-mixing interferometry (SMI) sensing system is investigated in this paper by solving the well known Lang and Kobayashi (LK) equations. Specifically, the influence of two important system parameters, i.e., the feedback level factor and the linewidth enhancement factor, on the transient is discussed, showing that the decay time and the oscillation period of the transient respectively increases and decreases with the increase of the feedback level factor, and both increase with the increase of linewidth enhancement factor. The results presented in this paper are useful for designing a stable SMI system.

A new linear wind generator (LWG), named PowerWindow, is introduced. The modular and scalable LWG is capable of generating power in low wind velocity condition, and hence can be an effective and safe power generator in built environments. The aerodynamic mechanism of the LWG power generation is elucidated using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations, and the results are validated against the experimental data obtained from the prototype wind tunnel tests. The simulations provide important insights into the flow field in and around LWG particularly over the front and rear blades and how each one contributes to the power generation. This …

Disaster Management (DM) is a complex set of interrelated activities. The activities are often knowledge intensive and time sensitive. Sharing the required knowledge timely is critical for DM. In developed countries, for recurring disasters (e.g. floods), there are dedicated document repositories of Disaster Management Plans (DMP) that can be accessed as needs arise. However, accessing the appropriate plan in a timely manner and sharing activities between plans often requires domain knowledge and intimate knowledge of the plans in the first place. Biometric cryptosystems provide an innovative solution for cryptographic key generation, encryption as well as biometric template protection. Besides high authentication accuracy, a good biometric cryptosystem is expected to protect biometric templates effectively, which requires that helper data does not reveal significant information about the templates. Previous works predominantly follow an appropriate entropy definition to measure the security of biometric cryptosystems. In this paper, we point out limitations of entropy-based security analysis and propose a new security analysis framework that combines information-theoretic approach with computational security. A hot compression bonding process was developed to prepare a novel laminated composite consisting of high-Cr cast iron (HCCI) as the inner layer and low carbon steel (LCS) as the outer layers on a Gleeble 3500 thermomechanical simulator at a temperature of 950 °C and a strain rate of 0.001 S-1. Interfacial bond quality and hot deformation behaviour of the laminate were studied by microstructural characterisation and mechanical tests. In order to analyze the effects of cold rolling parameters such as the crossing angle and axial shifting value of work rolls on the strip profile, extensive tests were carried out on a 4-high rolling mill equipped with a work roll crossing and shifting system. The results show that the strip profile is nearly flat under asymmetrical rolling. The rolling force was also analyzed in detail by changing the crossing angle and axial shifting value of work rolls.

Students’ understanding of probability concepts have been investigated from various different perspectives. This study was set out to investigate perceived understanding of probability concepts of forty-four students from the STAT131 Understanding Uncertainty and Variation course at the University of Wollongong, NSW. Rasch measurement which is based on a probabilistic model was used to identify concepts that students find easy, moderate and difficult to understand. Data were captured from the e-learning Moodle platform where students provided their responses through an on-line quiz. We analyze the steady-state operation of a generalized reactor model that encompasses a continuous flow bioreactor and an idealized continuous flow membrane reactor as limiting cases. The biochemical reaction kinetics is governed by a Contois growth model subject to noncompetitive substrate inhibition with a variable substrate yield coefficient. The steady-state performance of the reactor is predicted and stability of the steady-state solutions as a function of dimensionless residence time reported. Semi-analytical solutions for the reversible Selkov model are developed and used to investigate its static and dynamic stability. A one-dimensional reaction-diffusion cell is considered with all steps of the Selkov reaction modeled. A coupled set of four partial differential equations is obtained for the precursor, reactant, autocatalyst and final product concentrations. The Galerkin method is applied to approximate the spatial structure of the concentrations to obtain a lower-order, ordinary differential equation model, as an approximation to the governing partial differential equations. This work presents a fine microstructure and local misorientation study of various oxide phases in the tertiary oxide scale formed on a hot-rolled steel strip via electron back-scattering diffraction (EBSD). Local strain in individual grains of four phases, ferrite (α-Fe), wustite (FeO), magnetite (Fe3O4) and hematite (α-Fe2O3), has been systematically analysed. In this study, the authors investigate energy efficiency in antenna selection multi-input multi-output automatic repeat request (MIMO ARQ) wireless systems. The authors first derive an approximate expression for the average frame-error rate (FER) in antenna selection MIMO systems over quasi-static Nakagami-m fading channels. The FER approximation is then used to obtain an analytical expression of an energy-efficiency metric that is defined as the total energy required to successfully deliver one information bit. Cooperative communications using the Alamouti space-time block code (STBC) has been mentioned intensively. However, to our knowledge, an in-depth error performance analysis for a space-time coded cooperative communications system, where each node acts as both a source node and a relay node for its partner, has not been reported.
