Effect Of Deformation On Microstructure And Mechanical Properties Of Dual Phase Steel Produced Via Strip Casting Simulation, Zhiping Xiong, Andrii Kostryzhev, Nicole Stanford, Elena V. Pereloma

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The strip casting is a recently appeared technology with a potential to significantly reduce energy consumption in steel production, compared to hot rolling and cold rolling. However, the quantitative dependences of the steel microstructure and mechanical properties on strip casting parameters are unknown and require investigation. In the present work we studied the effects of strain and interrupted cooling temperature on microstructure and mechanical properties in conventional dual phase steel (0.08C-0.81Si-1.47Mn-0.03Al wt%). The strip casting process was simulated using a Gleeble 3500 thermo-mechanical simulator. The steel microstructures were studied using optical, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Mechanical properties were measured …

Combined Bearing And Shear-Out Capacity Of Structural Steel Bolted Connections, Lip H. Teh, Mehmet Eren Uz Jan 2016

Combined Bearing And Shear-Out Capacity Of Structural Steel Bolted Connections, Lip H. Teh, Mehmet Eren Uz

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This study is concerned with the strength limit state of serial bolted connections in structural steel plates. It points out that the ultimate load capacity of a serial bolted connection failing in combined bearing and shear-out cannot be computed as the simple sum of the respective ultimate bearing and ultimate shear-out capacities, which is implicitly permitted in design specifications worldwide. Based on the laboratory test results of 10 hot-rolled steel plate specimens composed of three different grades with nominal thicknesses ranging from 5 to 8 mm, the paper first establishes the ultimate bearing coefficient of a 20-mm bolted connection in …

Shape Optimisation Of Cold-Formed Steel Columns With Manufacturing Constraints Using The Hough Transform, Bin Wang, Benoit P. Gilbert, Adrien M. Molinier, Hong Guan, Lip H. Teh

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper introduces manufacturing constraints into a recently developed evolutionary algorithm for shape optimisation of CFS profiles. The algorithm is referred to as "self-shape optimisation" and uses Genetic Algorithm (GA) together with the Augmented Lagrangian (AL) method to avoid ill-conditioned problems. Simple manufacturing rules derived from the limitations of current cold-forming processes, i.e. a limited ability to form continuously curved surfaces without discrete bends, are described in the paper and incorporated into the algorithm. The Hough transform is used to detect straight lines and transform arbitrarily drawn cross-sections into manufacturable ones. Firstly, the algorithm is verified against a known optimisation …

Microstructures And Mechanical Properties Of Trip Steel Produced By Strip Casting Simulated In The Laboratory, Zhiping Xiong, Andrii Kostryzhev, Ahmed A. Saleh, Liang Chen, Elena V. Pereloma

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Conventional transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) steel (0.17C-1.52Si-1.61Mn-0.03Al, wt%) was produced via strip casting technology simulated in the laboratory. Effects of holding temperature, holding time and cooling rate on ferrite formation were studied via analysis of the continuous cooling transformation diagram obtained here. A typical microstructure for conventional TRIP steels consisting of ~ 0.55 fraction of polygonal ferrite with bainite, retained austenite and martensite was obtained. However, coarse prior austenite grain size of ~80 μm led to large polygonal ferrite grain size of ~17 μm, coarse second phase regions of ~21 μm size, small amount of retained austenite (0.02-0.045) and the …

On The Feasibility Of Partial Slip Reversal And De-Twinning During The Cyclic Loading Of Twip Steel, Ahmed A. Saleh, Bjorn Clausen, Donald W. Brown, Elena V. Pereloma, Christopher H. J Davies, Carlos N. Tome, Azdiar A. Gazder

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A recently modified Elasto-Plastic Self-Consistent (EPSC) model which empirically accounts for both intergranular and intragranular back stresses has been successfully used to simulate the cyclic (tension-compression) loading behaviour of an Fe-24Mn-3Al-2Si-1Ni-0.06C TWinning Induced Plasticity (TWIP) steel between strain limits of ±1%. Lattice strain measurements acquired via in-situ neutron diffraction were used to further validate the modelling results. An improved prediction of the pronounced Bauschinger effect during unloading is achieved when the reversibility of partial slip in the 〈112〉 direction is accounted for. This result indicates a potential contribution of the stress-induced separation of partial dislocations to the observed early yielding …

Influence Of Cr-Rich Oxide Scale On Sliding Wear Mechanism Of Ferritic Stainless Steel At High Temperature, Xiawei Cheng, Zhengyi Jiang, Buyung Kosasih, Hui Wu, Suzhen Luo, Laizhu Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The tribological tests of a ferritic stainless steel (FSS) 445 in contact with high-speed steel (HSS) were performed on a high-temperature pin-on-disc tribometer. Wear exhibited significant difference when the FSS 445 was oxidised with a Cr-rich oxide scale on the surface. The HSS pin displayed adhesive wear when there was no oxide scale on the stainless steel disc, and in the early stages, the coefficient of friction fluctuated significantly, but the level of wear changed as Cr2O3 particles formed. The wear was then reduced, and the coefficient of friction remained stable. The Cr-rich oxide scale which formed on the stainless …

Design-Oriented Stress–Strain Model For Concrete Under Combined Frp-Steel Confinement, G Lin, Tao Yu, Jin Guang Teng Jan 2016

Design-Oriented Stress–Strain Model For Concrete Under Combined Frp-Steel Confinement, G Lin, Tao Yu, Jin Guang Teng

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Extensive research has been conducted on fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP)-confined plain and RC columns, leading to a large number of stress–strain models. Most of these models have been developed for FRP-confined plain concrete and are thus applicable only to concrete in FRP-confined RC columns with a negligible amount of transverse steel reinforcement. The few models that have been developed for concrete under the combined confinement of FRP and transverse steel reinforcement are either inaccurate or too complex for direct use in design. This paper presents an accurate design-oriented stress–strain model for concrete under combined FRP-steel confinement in FRP-confined circular RC columns. …

Microstructure And Mechanical Properties Of Strip Cast Trip Steel Subjected To Thermo-Mechanical Simulation, Zhiping Xiong, Andrii Kostryzhev, Liang Chen, Elena V. Pereloma

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Instead of hot rolling and cold rolling followed by annealing, strip casting is a more economic and environmentally friendly way to produce transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) steels. According to industrial practice of strip casting, rapid cooling in this work was achieved using a dip tester, and a Gleeble 3500 thermo-mechanical simulator was used to carry out the processing route. A typical microstructure of TRIP steels, which included ~0.55 fraction of polygonal ferrite with bainite, retained austenite and martensite, was obtained. The effects of deformation (0.41 reduction) above non-recrystallisation temperature, isothermal bainite transformation temperature and the size of second phase region on …

Experimental And Numerical Study On The Effect Of Zddp Films On Sticking During Hot Rolling Of Ferritic Stainless Steel Strip, Liang Hao, Zhengyi Jiang, Dongbin Wei, Dianyao Gong, Xiawei Cheng, Jingwei Zhao, Suzhen Luo, Laizhu Jiang Jan 2016

Experimental And Numerical Study On The Effect Of Zddp Films On Sticking During Hot Rolling Of Ferritic Stainless Steel Strip, Liang Hao, Zhengyi Jiang, Dongbin Wei, Dianyao Gong, Xiawei Cheng, Jingwei Zhao, Suzhen Luo, Laizhu Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of zinc dialkyl dithio phosphate (ZDDP) films on sticking during hot rolling of a ferritic stainless steel strip. The surface characterization and crack propagation of the oxide scale are very important for understanding the mechanism of the sticking. The high-temperature oxidation of one typical ferritic stainless was conducted at 1373 K (1100 °C) for understanding its microstructure and surface morphology. Hot-rolling tests of a ferritic stainless steel strip show that no obvious cracks among the oxide scale were observed with the application of ZDDP. A finite element method model was …

Waste Activated Sludge Hydrolysis And Acidification: A Comparison Between Sodium Hydroxide And Steel Slag Addition, Ying Zhang, Chaojie Zhang, Xuan Zhang, Leiyu Feng, Yongmei Li, Qi Zhou Jan 2016

Waste Activated Sludge Hydrolysis And Acidification: A Comparison Between Sodium Hydroxide And Steel Slag Addition, Ying Zhang, Chaojie Zhang, Xuan Zhang, Leiyu Feng, Yongmei Li, Qi Zhou

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Alkaline treatment with steel slag and NaOH addition were investigated under different pH conditions for the fermentation of waste activated sludge. Better performance was achieved in steel slag addition scenarios for both sludge hydrolysis and acidification. More solubilization of organic matters and much production of higher VFA (volatile fatty acid) in a shorter time can be achieved at pH. 10 when adjusted by steel slag. Higher enzyme activities were also observed in steel slag addition scenarios under the same pH conditions. Phosphorus concentration in the supernatant increased with fermentation time and pH in NaOH addition scenarios, while in contrast most …

Characterisation And Resource Development Of Steel Plant By-Product Streams, Raymond Longbottom, Brian J. Monaghan, Guangqing Zhang, Sheng Chew, David J. Pinson

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The recycling of steel plant by-products is a critical issue that needs thorough assessment and development for the sustainability of the integrated steel plant, from both environmental and economical perspectives. Research is being undertaken in the Steel Research Hub that aims to realise the value of by-products to the Australian steel industry and minimise the amount of by-product going to long term stockpile. As the first step, dust from basic oxygen steelmaking (BOS), a major steel plant by-product stream, is being characterised so that its potential use on plant or elsewhere can be assessed and evaluated. BOS dust contains components …

Lubrication Characterisation Analysis Of Stainless Steel Foil During Micro Rolling, Haibo Xie, Kenichi Manabe, Tsuyoshi Furushima, Kazuo Tada, Zhengyi Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Physical parameters, such as microscopic and roughness, play important roles in microforming process due to an increasing ratio of surface to volume of the deformed material. The study on lubrication characterisation in microforming is getting more attractive to researchers because traditional models are not reliable in this scaled down process. In this study, the micro rolling deformation characterisation has been investigated on SUS 304 stainless steel considering lubricant effect and feature size effect. The foil thickness plays an important role in the tribological features of micro rolling. The evolutions of both oil film thickness and foil surface are analysed accordingly. …

Cyclic Lateral Response Of Frp-Confined Circular Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular Columns, Tao Yu, Y M. Hu, Jin Guang Teng Jan 2016

Cyclic Lateral Response Of Frp-Confined Circular Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular Columns, Tao Yu, Y M. Hu, Jin Guang Teng

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Concrete-filled steel tubular (CFT) columns are widely used as columns in many structural systems and a common failure mode of such tubular columns is inelastic outward local buckling near a column end. The use of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) jackets/wraps for the suppression of such local buckling has recently been proposed and has been proven to possess excellent potential in both retrofit/strengthening and new construction. This paper presents the results of an experimental study into the behaviour of large-scale FRP-confined CFT (CCFT) columns under combined axial compression and lateral loading. The test parameters included the stiffness of the FRP jacket and …

Compressive Behavior Of Frp-Confined Concrete-Encased Steel Columns, Tao Yu, G Lin, Shi Shun Zhang Jan 2016

Compressive Behavior Of Frp-Confined Concrete-Encased Steel Columns, Tao Yu, G Lin, Shi Shun Zhang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

FRP-confined concrete-encased steel I-section columns (FCSCs) are an emerging form of hybrid columns. An FCSC consists of an outer FRP tube, an encased steel section and a concrete infill. The FCSCs possess many advantages over conventional reinforced concrete columns, including the excellent corrosion resistance, excellent ductility and ease for construction. Existing studies on FCSCs, however, have been rather limited. This paper presents a combined experimental and theoretical study on the behavior of FCSCs under concentric and eccentric compression. The experimental program included the testing of a total of 14 specimens, with the main variables being the section configuration, the thickness …
