Although our Sierra system runs well day to day, looking closely at usage trends helped us determine what areas needed extra attention and where we could improve customer service (new circulation notices!). For our mature system, examining the major tables that run Sierra's circulation system—branches, item types, patron types, notice texts—was particularly important as our Library use has changed over the years. This program will share strategies for examining and streamlining system tables, and implementing circulation notices using print templates.

University Libraries Materials Budget: Spring 2018, Sue Polanka, Karen Wilhoit

University Libraries' Staff Publications

The University Libraries’ mission is to provide exceptional research services and resources to facilitate faculty and student success. We strive to uphold this mission in all we do. Our budget remains a challenge however, and limits our ability to provide exceptional resources. The Libraries’ materials budget has been flat or reduced every year since 2009. During that time, journal prices have increased an average of 5% to 6% per year, and book prices have increased an average of 1% to 2% per year. Because our budget has not kept pace with inflation, we have been forced to cancel over 800 …

Academic Librarians’ Attitudes About Civic-Mindedness And Service Learning, Maureen Barry, Laura A. Lowe, Sarah E. Twill

University Libraries' Staff Publications

Although discourse on the civic engagement of libraries as institutions is plentiful, there has been little discussion of librarians as individuals. Librarianship is more than being a trustee of information. It includes responsibility for the common good. Libraries provide tools for education on social and political issues, but they can also collaborate in activities that improve well-being in their communities. Participating in service learning is one way that librarians on academic campuses can get involved. This study used a standardized scale to measure civic-mindedness among academic librarians and examine characteristics and activities, including service learning, related to variation in its …

Librarians In The Midst: Improving Student Research Through Collaborative Instruction, Mandy Shannon, Vaughn Shannon

University Libraries' Staff Publications

We test whether and how well the presence of an embedded librarian improves the quality of student research. Students in introductory-level courses tend to have very low levels of research skills and experience. Though faculty are frustrated by this lack of skills, both students and faculty tend to have only a peripheral knowledge of the role librarians can play in helping develop their research skills. Studies suggest that embedding librarians into course instruction is the preferred method for improving students’ research skills, yet the political science teaching and learning literature rarely addresses this issue, or focus on single class experiences, …
