Pursuant to a letter dated 11 Apr 80 from Mr. Bruce F. Kadzban, Moore and Bruggink, Inc., Grand Rapids, Michigan, authorizing an archaeological survey of a proposed sewer system corridor around Green Lake in Leighton Township, Allegan County, Michigan, a team of archaeologists from the Department of Anthropology, Western Michigan University undertook on-site assessment of the project area in order to ascertain whether the construction activities would impact cultural resources. There follows a report of fieldwork, together with appropriate background information, conducted on 21-22 Apr 80 and the recommendations based upon our findings.

This project was undertaken in response to a request for an archaeological survey of the area to be impacted from Mr. Paul J. Kaiser, Van Buren County Highway Engineer. A letter to this effect was received by Dr. R. J. Smith, Chairman of the Department of Anthropology at Western Michigan University, dated May 6, 1980. A Plan of Site map was also forwarded to Dr. Smith by R. S. Scott Associates, Inc. of Alpena, Michigan.

An agreement to do the survey was made in a phone call from Dr. Elizabeth Garland to Mr. Kaiser on May 9, 1980. The survey …

This project was undertaken in response to a request by Mr. Ronald Copping of the Kalamazoo County Road Commission, under terms of a written agreement between the Principal Investigator and the Road Commission which was accepted on October 14, 1980. The purpose of the investigation was to determine the existence of historic or prehistoric sites in those portions of the Climax-Fulton Road Reconstruction Project which involve relocation of the existing 66 foot right-of-way. Field work was carried out on October 18, 1980.

43-Carbonized Plant Residues From Five Sites In The White Walnut Creek Research Area, Consolidation Coal Company's Burning Star Mine No. 2, Perry County, Il, William M. Cremin

Reports of Investigations

The White Walnut Creek research area consists of approximately 1437 ha in eight sections of T5S, R2W, Perry County, Illinois. Physiographically speaking, the study area lies within the southern portion of the till plains region known as the Mt. Vernon Hill Country and is characterized by mature topography as reflected in gentl~ rolling hills and broad alluvial valleys. Floristically, this drainage is part of the Oak-Hickory Forest Region of the Western Mesophytic Forest as defined by Braun (1950).
