Analyzing The Efficiency Of Reforestation Efforts In Regaining Carbon Storage In A Costa Rican Cloud Forest, Elvin Irihamye Mar 2018

Analyzing The Efficiency Of Reforestation Efforts In Regaining Carbon Storage In A Costa Rican Cloud Forest, Elvin Irihamye

Student Research Conference Select Presentations

Forests hold an important place in offsetting carbon emissions, absorbing nearly 40 percent of man-made fossil fuel emissions every year. Over the last 100 years, the effects of deforestation have crippled our forest’s ability to store excess carbon, leading to drastic atmospheric change. Efforts to regrow deforested forests have increased rapidly to address issues like climate change. There is thus a need to analyze current efforts at regaining carbon storage, a critical component to maintaining atmospheric homeostasis. Accordingly, we traveled to the Cloudbridge Nature Reserve in San Gerardo, Costa Rica to aggregate data on the carbon storage capabilities across three …

The Effects Of Parenting Relationships And Sports, John Carder Dallas Apr 2017

The Effects Of Parenting Relationships And Sports, John Carder Dallas

Student Research Conference Select Presentations

Youth sport participation in our society is on the rise, with 90% of children taking part in some form of organized sport between the ages of 5 and 17. With more children becoming more active in sporting activities, the role of par ents can impact parent/child communication and mold the character of the child. Parents with p ositive involvement in their child’s activities emphasized skills such as hard work and team building rather than winning or losing. The way involved parents communicated with children also impacted the motivation a child had for participating in a sport. Children receiving positive messages …

Colors In The World Of Healing", Jordan Mcroberts Apr 2017

Colors In The World Of Healing", Jordan Mcroberts

Student Research Conference Select Presentations

Color has many places in the world. The human body and mind react to color in a way that is hard to explain. It is sometimes so subtle we may not even notice it. In this physician office’s design, color is picked out and placed to promote health and wellness. The research 69 conducted shows that color alters mood and promotes health in the human body. The colors selected are blue, green, and white. The calming color, blue, is believed to reduce migraines, nervousness, and high blood pressure. Earthy greens are believed to be stress reducing and have a positive …

Birth Plan Non-Adherence: Impact On Birth Satisfaction, Interventions And Perceived Birth Trauma, Mollie Berger Mar 2017

Birth Plan Non-Adherence: Impact On Birth Satisfaction, Interventions And Perceived Birth Trauma, Mollie Berger

Student Research Conference Select Presentations

Birth plans help to empower women in their birth decisions and create a means to communicate with the healthcare providers prior to going into labor. Birth plans play a distinct role in overall birth satisfaction, which in turn has an impact of maternal well-being and bonding with the infant. When changes are made to birth plans, especially without the mother’s consent, overall birth satisfaction may decrease and the risk of developing post- birth traumatic symptoms may increase. An online survey of childbirth experiences was administered to more than 2000 women. Birth satisfaction and post-birth traumatic symptoms were compared between women …

Cultivating Community: Experiences Of African Refugee Gardeners, Elizabeth Willenbrink Jan 2017

Cultivating Community: Experiences Of African Refugee Gardeners, Elizabeth Willenbrink

Student Research Conference Select Presentations

Past and present, community gardening has been used as a response to poverty, a way to supplement healthy foods, and a mechanism for community involvement. For thirteen refugee families living at the Housing Authority of Bowling Green, community gardening has become a way to recreate their traditional cult ure. Based on data collected through interviews during the summer of 2016, these refugee s identified gardening as a buffer against food insecurity, providing access to both healthy a nd culturally appropriate foods. Most importantly, the interviewees identified gardening as a mechanism for support and togetherness among the city’s refugee population. M …

Tay-Sachs And Its Prevalence In The Ashkenazi Jewish, French-Canadian, And Louisiana Cajun Population, Kayla Peveler Jan 2017

Tay-Sachs And Its Prevalence In The Ashkenazi Jewish, French-Canadian, And Louisiana Cajun Population, Kayla Peveler

Student Research Conference Select Presentations

The purpose of my study is to examine the molecular evolution of the HEXA gene and its implications to Tay-Sachs disease. Also, this study intends to compare and contrast the mutations that occur within the various populations at high-risk of developing this disease. My central concept is population genetics in which populations are compared among each other to identify patterns or possible causes of a particular phenomenon. Numerous research studies have been conducted to study specific popul ations for Tay-Sachs, such as the Ashkenazi Jewish population and the Indian communit y. In my study, I intend to compare and contrast …

Confidence Intervals For The Ratio Of Two Exponential Means With Applications To Quality Control, James Albert Polcer,Iii Jun 2009

Confidence Intervals For The Ratio Of Two Exponential Means With Applications To Quality Control, James Albert Polcer,Iii

Student Research Conference Select Presentations

We considered the problem of statistical quality control based on the ratio of two population means. We restrict the discussion for two exponential rates, which are commonly used for modeling failure times of components, machines, or systems. Closed form expressions via the moment generation function (MGF) technique will be presented, and numerical examples will be shown using engineering data sets.

Searching For Binding Partners For The Novel Phkg1 Variant, Phkγ 181, Kishore Polireddy

Student Research Conference Select Presentations

Phopshorylase kinase (PhK) is a hexadecameric holoenzyme made up of four different subunits in the arrangement (αβγδ)4 and has total molecular mass of 1.3MDa. Alpha and β are regulatory subunits, γ is catalytic, and δ is an intrinsic molecule of calmodulin. PhK is a serine threonine kinase with glycogenolytic regulatory functions. Our lab has recently discovered that the γ subunit can be alternatively processed to produce a truncated form of 181 residues (γ-181). This variant of γ contains a phosphorylation site for PK-C, and its activity is influenced by this phosphorylation. We are using a LexA based yeast two hybrid …
