On The Reporting Of Reliability In Content Analysis, Patric R. Spence
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
This article explores one type of misreporting of reliability that has been seen in recent conference papers and articles using the method of content analysis. The reporting of reliability is central to the validity of claims made using this method. A brief overview of content analysis is offered, followed by the exploration of one type of misreporting of reliability. Suggestions are offered to address the problem.
Stratified Extreme Ranked Set Sample With Application To Ratio Estimators, Hani M. Samawai, Laith J. Saeid
Stratified Extreme Ranked Set Sample With Application To Ratio Estimators, Hani M. Samawai, Laith J. Saeid
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Stratified extreme ranked set sample (SERSS) is introduced. The performance of the combined and separate ratio estimates using SERSS is investigated. Theoretical and simulation study are presented. Results indicate that using SERSS for estimating the ratios is more efficient than using stratified simple random sample (SSRS) and simple random sample (SRS). In some cases it is more efficient than ranked set sample (RSS) and stratified ranked set sample (SRSS), when the underlying distribution is symmetric. An application to real data on the bilirubin level in jaundice babies is introduced to illustrate the method.
Jmasm10: A Fortran Routine For Sieve Bootstrap Prediction Intervals, Andrés M. Alonso
Jmasm10: A Fortran Routine For Sieve Bootstrap Prediction Intervals, Andrés M. Alonso
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
A Fortran routine for constructing nonparametric prediction intervals for a general class of linear processes is described. The approach uses the sieve bootstrap procedure of Bühlmann (1997) based on residual resampling from an autoregressive approximation to the given process.
Accurate Binary Decisions For Assessing Coronary Artery Disease, Mehmet Ali Cengiz
Accurate Binary Decisions For Assessing Coronary Artery Disease, Mehmet Ali Cengiz
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Generalized linear models offer convenient and highly applicable tools for modeling and predicting the behavior of random variables in terms of observable factors and covariates. This paper investigates applications of a special case of generalized linear model to improve the accuracy of predictions and decisions adopting Bayesian methods, in the specific context of assessing coronary artery disease. The basic model is developed for this application using binary response. The results clearly demonstrate the potential advantages offered by this approach.
Teaching Random Assignment: Do You Believe It Works?, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky
Teaching Random Assignment: Do You Believe It Works?, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Textbook authors admonish students to check on the comparability of two randomly assigned groups by conducting statistical tests on pretest means to determine if randomization worked. A Monte Carlo study was conducted on a sample of n = 2 per group, where each participant’s personality profile was represented by 7,500 randomly selected and assigned scores. Independent samples t tests were conducted and the results demonstrated that random assignment was successful in equating the two groups on 7,467 variables. The students’ focus is redirected from the ability of random assignment to create comparable groups to the testing of the claims of …
A Comparison Of Bayesian And Frequentist Statistics As Applied In A Simple Repeated Measures Example, Jan Perkins, Daniel Wang
A Comparison Of Bayesian And Frequentist Statistics As Applied In A Simple Repeated Measures Example, Jan Perkins, Daniel Wang
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Clinicians see Bayesian and frequentist analysis in published research papers, and need a basic understanding of both. A repeated measures data set was analyzed using both approaches. Assumptions underlying each method and conclusions reached were contrasted. The Bayesian approach is a viable alternative to frequentist statistical analysis for many clinical projects.

Strategies For Planning And Promoting Library Services To New Users, Deborah H. Charbonneau, Carrie F. Croatt-Moore, Laventra E. Danquah
Library Scholarly Publications
A team of academic librarians is using a set of common strategies – assessment, advocacy and advertisement - to develop and enhance health information services and programs to an urban campus community and beyond. As a means of meeting the challenge of disseminating and promoting a large number of new information resources and skills to current library patrons and to new user populations, these strategies inform a refocused program for on-site library instruction, a current health information outreach initiative and planning for a new health outreach initiative. By sharing the methods and results of these strategies in consort with a …

An Exploratory Study Into The Use Of Hyper-Interactive Teaching Technology In The Logistics And Transportation Classroom, Stephen M. Rutner
Journal of Transportation Management
New technologies are being developed that can assist professors in the classroom. One is the Hyper-Interactive Teaching Technology or H-ITT. This is a system that allows instructors to gather instantaneous feedback from st udents for a variety of topics. The article examines the benefits and disadvantages of using H-ITT in the classroom and presents some initial findings.
Using Life-Cycle Costing And The Strategic Profit Model To Enhance Motor Carrier Capital Equipment Management, Joe B. Hanna, Andrew Stapleton, Brian R. Zoll
Using Life-Cycle Costing And The Strategic Profit Model To Enhance Motor Carrier Capital Equipment Management, Joe B. Hanna, Andrew Stapleton, Brian R. Zoll
Journal of Transportation Management
Participants in the increasingly competitive motor carrier industry are constantly trying to identify ways to enhance customer service levels and/or reduce costs. This research summarized case-based data from three large carriers to examine the use of life-cycle costing as a method to enhance motor carrier equipment management. The financial results of applying the technique are then examined by applying the Strategic Profit Model.
Carrier Scorecarding: Purposes, Processes, And Benefits, Brian J. Gibson, Jerry W. Wilson
Carrier Scorecarding: Purposes, Processes, And Benefits, Brian J. Gibson, Jerry W. Wilson
Journal of Transportation Management
Carrier scorecarding programs (CSP’s) provide a formal, quantitative mechanism for use in assessing carrier performance. Such programs provide valuable input for carrier rationalization and contract development initiatives and can also serve as a key component of a Six Sigma program. In this study, the overall goal was to address three research questions. First, why are organizations adopting CSP’s? Second, how are organizations using carrier scorecarding to select and manage carriers? Finally, how does carrier scorecarding impact organizational performance? These questions were used to develop the set of research propositions that formed the basis for the investigation. In-depth case studies of …
Basing Rate Adjustments For Motor Carriers On Statistical Evidence, L Douglas Smith, James F. Campbell, Ray Mundy
Basing Rate Adjustments For Motor Carriers On Statistical Evidence, L Douglas Smith, James F. Campbell, Ray Mundy
Journal of Transportation Management
Pricing services of motor carriers is a dynamic process, with continuous pressure from customers to offer competitive rates and discounts. This can lead to a profusion of special arrangements with rates that poorly reflect the services rendered. This article shows how standard database systems and statistical models can be used to extract useful information from bills of lading to assist in the pricing of freight services. Summaries of business performance are produced according to terminal facility, shipping origin, shipping destination, individual shipping lane and individual customer. User-friendly statistical models are constructed to produce benchmarks for rates and revenues considering the …
Depot Repair Capacity As A Criterion For Transportation Mode Selection In The Retrograde Movement Of Reparable Assets, William A. Cunningham, Stephen Swartz, Harold M. Kahler
Depot Repair Capacity As A Criterion For Transportation Mode Selection In The Retrograde Movement Of Reparable Assets, William A. Cunningham, Stephen Swartz, Harold M. Kahler
Journal of Transportation Management
To support smaller reparable asset inventories, current Air Force logistics policies direct the “expedited evacuation of reparables ... to the source of repair.” Mode selection is based on the asset. Focusing on the asset is an efficient and effective method of getting assets to where they are needed in a timely manner in the forward portion of the supply pipeline. However, in the reverse portion of the pipeline, the demand for an asset may no longer be critical to how it is transported. The quantity of the asset at the depot may already exceed repair capacity. In this instance, rapid …

Introducing Dialogue To Graduate Students, Monica W. Tracey, David L. Solomon, James L. Moseley
Administrative and Organizational Studies
Scholars and practitioners in adult education commonly agree on the importance of communication and interaction in the adult classroom. Frequently, however, learners are not provided with guidelines on how to interact and communicate with others in such settings. This paper reports on an experiential orientation to the practice of dialogue for adults in a graduate program
Marital Functioning, Chronic Pain, And Psychological Distress, Annmarie Cano, Mazy Gillis, Wanda Heinz, Michael Geisser, Heather Foran
Marital Functioning, Chronic Pain, And Psychological Distress, Annmarie Cano, Mazy Gillis, Wanda Heinz, Michael Geisser, Heather Foran
Psychology Faculty Research Publications
This study examined whether marital functioning variables related uniquely to psychological distress and diagnoses of depressive disorder independent of pain severity and physical disability. Participants were 110 chronic musculoskeletal pain patients. Hierarchical regression results showed that marital variables (i.e. marital satisfaction, negative spouse responses to pain) contributed significantly to depressive and anxiety symptoms over and above the effects of pain severity and physical disability. In contrast, marital variables were not significantly related to diagnoses of depressive disorder (i.e. major depression, dysthymia, or both) after controlling for pain variables. In multivariate analyses, physical disability and marital satisfaction were uniquely related to …

Hortaliza: A Youth "Nutrition" Garden In Southwest Detroit, Kameshwari Pothukuchi
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Research Publications
This paper documents a youth garden that was developed in 2000 through a university-community partnership in a low-income, predominantly Latino neighborhood in southwest Detroit. It involved four community-based organizations and several residents -- youth among them -- from the neighborhood, in garden planning, set-up, and management. Kids grew vegetables of different kinds to take home and ate healthy snacks at the garden. They learned about the importance of vegetables and fruits to healthy diets, the nutritional value of particular vegetables, and how to grow vegetables. At the end of the season, we documented increased interest among kids in eating fruits …
