Improving Access To Care In Virginia: Reaching Nurse Practitioner Training Capacity Through Preceptor Incentives, Debra Barksdale, Christine Kennedy, Shelly Smith

Workforce data reinforces the notion that educating nurse practitioners in Virginia is critical in helping to improve access to care in the Commonwealth, particularly in underserved communities. Six of Virginia’s thirty-nine state funded colleges and universities offer nurse practitioner programs. All of these universities report their capacity to train nurse practitioners is not limited by qualified applicants but rather by a shortage of clinical preceptors. This paper provides a summary of public policy initiatives that support preceptors as an example for Virginia to consider.

Over the course of a lesbian, gay, or bisexual individual's lifetime there is a 20% risk of experiencing hate violence, while a transgender individual's risk of violence is 27%. Three key recommendations are given for reducing the victimization of LGBT people by hate crimes.

Palliative care specialists, who care for patients with serious, life-limiting illnesses such as cancer, are experts in evaluating and managing acute pain. Amid concerns of substance abuse and diversion in patients with cancer, including those near the end of life, regulations and training for providers should encourage the development and use of distinct assessment and management guidelines for palliative care situations.

Racially and socio-economically diverse schools can bring higher student achievement and ensure better outcomes for lower income and minority students. By creating diverse school environments, students from a young age are less likely to form racial stereotypes and more likely to seek out integrated environments in the future.
