Economic Sanctions: Their Ineffectiveness At Attaining Their Stated Foreign Policy Goals With Specific Reference To The Cuban Case, Harold Lee Ingram
Economic Sanctions: Their Ineffectiveness At Attaining Their Stated Foreign Policy Goals With Specific Reference To The Cuban Case, Harold Lee Ingram
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
International economic sanctions are not singularly modem phenomena. In ancient Greece, Pericles of Athens enacted the Megerian Decree in 432 BC in response to hostile acts taken against it by neighboring Megera. Later, during the American Revolutionary War, Thomas Jefferson encouraged the use of sanctions as an effective tool of coercive foreign policy to be used against the colonists' enemies. Since then, following the historical precedence of economic acts like the Megerian Decree, economic sanctions have continued to be used as tools of coercive diplomatic policy. For example, following World War I, President Woodrow Wilson encouraged the use of economic …
Comparison Of Utah And Dodpi Scoring Accuracy: Equating Veracity Decision Rule, Chart Rule, And Number Of Data Channels Used, Stuart M. Senter, Andrew B. Dollins, Donald J. Krapohl, Department Of Defense Polygraph Institute Research Division
Comparison Of Utah And Dodpi Scoring Accuracy: Equating Veracity Decision Rule, Chart Rule, And Number Of Data Channels Used, Stuart M. Senter, Andrew B. Dollins, Donald J. Krapohl, Department Of Defense Polygraph Institute Research Division
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
The performance of scorers using the University of Utah and Department of Defense Polygraph Institute (DoD PI) physiological detection of deception chart evaluation rules were compared to discover if differences in laboratory-based decision accuracy rates are due to chart evaluation rules. Four scorers (two based at the DoD PI , two based at the University of Utah) evaluated the charts from 100 polygraph examinations (50 deceptive, 50 nondeceptive). We attempted to isolate scorer ability by equating the rules for making veracity decisions, number of charts used, and number of data channels considered. There was no evidence, when these variables were …

School-Based Primary Prevention Of Internalizing Disorders, Carol M. Moore
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
This paper provides an overview of childhood internalizing disorders, including the symptomatology, prevalence rates, comorbidity of other psychopathologies, correlated factors, treatment, and prognosis. Previous research in the area of primary and secondary prevention of depression and anxiety is reviewed, and the need for school-based prevention programs discussed. Several curricular and comprehensive elementary-level programs that are currently available and supported by research are reviewed to highlight their efficacy, theoretical rationale, targeted risk factors, and implementation concerns. Conclusions and recommendations for implementation and future research are presented.
Is It Time For Cooperative Learning To Enter American Classrooms?, Donna Sewell
Is It Time For Cooperative Learning To Enter American Classrooms?, Donna Sewell
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Education's raison d'etre is to prepare students with the skills necessary for a productive and happy life within society. The fact that many educational institutions are experiencing a disconcerting number of students dropping out of school (and sometimes life itself) may be an indicator that this preparation is less than adequate in meeting their needs. In fact, the needs of a high school graduate today are so different and far-reaching than what they were 30-50 years ago, it will be easier to group them according to a change in economics, transformed demographics and changes in social situations and practices. Each …
The Relationship Of Human Psychological Characteristics With Athletic Performance, Grant P. Murray
The Relationship Of Human Psychological Characteristics With Athletic Performance, Grant P. Murray
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The purpose of this paper is to report the findings of a literature review summary on the topic of the relationship of human psychological characteristics with athletic performance. Two research questions guided its development: (1) Is there any evidence that there is a relationship between individual human psychological characteristics and athletic performance? (2) If there is any evidence that there is a relationship between individual human psychological characteristics and athletic performance, is there further evidence that those individual characteristics translate in some way into group dynamics or attributes that may similarly influence team performance?
Adolescent Suicide: A Review Of School-Based Suicide Prevention In Middle And High School Settings, Stephanie Anne Alberico

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Suicide has been named a leading cause of death for 15 to 24 year-olds and it is evident that this public health concern warrants specific attention. The purpose of this paper was to review school-based suicide prevention programs. Prior to this review, background information on suicide including prevalence rates and general information on suicide is presented. It has been determined that adolescent males are four times as likely than females to complete suicide while females are twice as likely to attempt suicide. The most common methods of adolescent suicide completion are firearms and explosives while the most common mean of …
A Follow-Up Study Of A Primary Prevention Program Targeting Childhood Depression, Norman Chris Johnson
A Follow-Up Study Of A Primary Prevention Program Targeting Childhood Depression, Norman Chris Johnson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Children have not historically been the subject of research focusing on internalizing disorders (i.e., childhood depression), even though childhood depression continues to be viewed as one of the most prevalent affective problem within this population. Over the past two decades, a small portion of that literature describes prevention efforts in public schools. There has been a growing body of literature centered on childhood depression. However, there are only three studies that report on longitudinal findings that have taken a primary prevention approach.
The present study was a follow-up investigation to delineate the effects of a school-based primary prevention program. The …
Treatment Of Separation Anxiety Disorder And School Refusal: A Comprehensive Review Of The Literature, Nicole Petersen
Treatment Of Separation Anxiety Disorder And School Refusal: A Comprehensive Review Of The Literature, Nicole Petersen
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Separation anxiety disorder is a condition in which a child or adolescent experiences severe anxiety when separation from a parent or caregiver is imminent. A possible symptom of separation anxiety disorder or other psychological conditions is that the child may refuse to attend school or run away from school during the day, an occurrence commonly referred to as school refusal. Children with separation anxiety disorder or school refusal may, as a result, be limited in their social and educational opportunities. Therefore, a review of published studies on the treatment of separation anxiety disorder and school refusal was completed. To adequately …
Returns To Public Agricultural Expenditure Under Uncertainty, Sanjeev Misra
Returns To Public Agricultural Expenditure Under Uncertainty, Sanjeev Misra
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A vast literature has investigated the returns to investment in agriculture research and generally found extremely high rates of return. These results suggest policymakers would do well to maintain or increase resource allocation to public agricultural research. Remarkably little attention has been paid, however, to the issue of how best to allocate public agricultural research funding between competing research areas and organizations. This paper considers the relative returns to alternative uses of public agricultural research funds committed to the agricultural experiment stations of 10 western states of the United States over the years 1967-91. A model of expected utility maximization …

Riparian Zone Protection: The Use Of The Willingness-To-Accept Format In A Contingent Valuation Study, Catherine A. Broadhead
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The contingent valuation method (CVM) is used to evaluate the minimum compensation landowners require to forego production on farm riverbanks areas. The elicitation format used in the survey is a yes-no participation question followed by an open-ended question.
Chapter 2 presents the results of the survey. The Heckman approach is used in the econometric analysis to take care of the self-selection problem arising with this formatting of the questions. Chapter 3 is devoted to further examining the potential for undertaking valuation exercises using the willingness-to-accept format (WTA)
WTA estimates obtained with open-ended format are compared to WTA estimates obtained when …

The six family child care homes were divided into two groups based on more or less use of appropriate practices, and they were observed for the use of appropriate practices. Three one-hour observations were held in each family child care …
Family Leadership: Constructing And Testing A Theoretical Model Of Family Well-Being, Kevin A. Galbraith
Family Leadership: Constructing And Testing A Theoretical Model Of Family Well-Being, Kevin A. Galbraith
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Leadership in organizational contexts has received considerable attention through the years. Although much is known about what constitutes effective leadership in an organizational setting, little is known about leadership as it pertains to the family. To address this limitation, a theoretical model of family leadership was developed. This model draws on transformational leadership and proposes five areas in which leadership could be carried out to lead and strengthen the family unit. These five areas include (1) leading the family with a vision, (2) maintaining a task orientation, (3) fostering close familial relationships, (4) establishing cooperation and teamwork, and (5) building …

Data from the AGS measures were …
A Dynamic Analysis Of The Global Timber Market And Carbon Flux Of Forest Under Global Warming: An Integrated Modeling Approach, Dug Man Lee
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
As global warming migrates ecosystems toward the poles, the result has been a change in the distribution of ecosystem types and the productivity of ecosystem as well. Similar to other natural resources, forests are also potentially affected as ecosystems move toward the poles. Consequently, human beings are forced to adapt, and global warming will generate an impact on the global timber market through changes in timber harvests, regeneration inputs, stumpage prices, etc. In addition, the dynamic process of forest change in response to economic activities of human beings will accelerate or dampen the amount of carbon in the atmosphere. In …
Fathers, Mothers, Marriages, And Children: Toward A Contextual Model Of Positive Paternal Influence, Ariel Rodriguez
Fathers, Mothers, Marriages, And Children: Toward A Contextual Model Of Positive Paternal Influence, Ariel Rodriguez
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This research explored positive paternal involvement in the lives of children within the broader familial context of marital dynamics and positive maternal involvement. The National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH) was used to obtain a longitudinal subsample of 582 first-married couples, as well as the wide range of variables necessary to explore this broader context of paternal influence. Three research questions guided the study: (1) What is the unique contribution of positive paternal involvement—with respect to positive maternal involvement and marital quality—in children's development? (2) How does the influence of positive paternal involvement interact with the influence of positive …
Financial Problems As Predictors Of Divorce: A Social Exchange Perspective, Jan D. Anderson
Financial Problems As Predictors Of Divorce: A Social Exchange Perspective, Jan D. Anderson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
By using a conceptual framework derived from social exchange theory, this study examined the relationship between financial problems and divorce. Nationally representative data from the "Marital Instability Over the Life Course" panel study was used to determine if financial problems reported at one interview could predict those who would divorce by the subsequent interview. A self-replicating design allowed data analyses for three separate time periods: 1980-1983, 1983- 1988, and 1988-1992.
The sample used in this study consisted of 1,620 married men and women under the age of 55. Additionally, the participants were in their first marriages.
Divorce was the only …
Clinical Homework Directives: A Qualitative Exploratory Study, Emil F. Harker
Clinical Homework Directives: A Qualitative Exploratory Study, Emil F. Harker
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A qualitative study was conducted to better understand how marriage and family therapists use homework directives in their work with couples. Eleven therapists of different marital therapy orientations were interviewed. Remarkably, all of the therapists reported using clinical homework directives in their practice with couples, including those clinicians who primarily identify themselves with psychodynamic models- -models that do not typically include homework in their constructs. Four themes emerged as to why homework is given: (a) to augment or extend the therapy session outside of therapy, (b) to help the clients focus on the therapy process between session, (c) to assess …

- Describe background variables of subjects seeking bereavement group interventions.
- Describe leader variables of persons leading bereavement group interventions.
- Describe intervention variables in bereavement group interventions.
The major finding of the meta-analysis was that children and adult experimental subjects benefitted from the grief interventions in comparison to their control counterparts. The ratio …
The Influence Of Parental Attributions And Parenting Behaviors On The Attributions Utilized By Children With And Without Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Brent R. Collett
The Influence Of Parental Attributions And Parenting Behaviors On The Attributions Utilized By Children With And Without Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Brent R. Collett
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Research suggests that the causal attributions utilized by children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) differ from those of nonclinical children. Additionally, research indicates differences among the mothers of children with and without ADHD regarding parenting behaviors and attributions for child behavior. In this study, children's attributions, maternal attributions, and maternal discipline styles were examined in ADHD and non-ADHD populations. Participants included 26 children diagnosed with ADHD and their mothers as well as a nonclinical sample of 24 children who had never been diagnosed with ADHD and their mothers. The results support the hypotheses that child and maternal attributions would differ between …
Use Of The Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms Rating Scale With Preschool Children, Penny Ladee Phillips
Use Of The Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms Rating Scale With Preschool Children, Penny Ladee Phillips
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common disorder among children and is usually diagnosed during the school years, although symptoms must be present before age 7. As more children enter into preschool programs, there is great opportunity for early identification and treatment of behaviors related to ADHD. The earlier children with symptoms of ADHD are treated, the better their chances of having successful school experiences. Unfortunately, diagnosing ADHD during early childhood is difficult, in part because there is a lack of adequate assessment instruments designed for this age group. The instruments that are available generally do not focus specifically on …

Effect Of Land In Commons On The Decision-Making Behavior Of The Pastoralists In The Central Rangelands Of Somalia, Abdinasir Mohamed Abdulle
Effect Of Land In Commons On The Decision-Making Behavior Of The Pastoralists In The Central Rangelands Of Somalia, Abdinasir Mohamed Abdulle
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Degradations of the rangelands is very common around the permanent settlements of the central rangelands of Somalia. This degradation is attributed to overstocking resulting form the fact that the rangelands are communally owned and herders are ignoring the shadow value of the forage. Information about the optimal herd size would help halt the rangeland degradation.
In this study, two allocation mechanisms were compared. The first was the private ownership solution where someone owns the rangeland and decides how many animals should be grazed there. The second was the solution where the rangeland is owned in common by the dwellers of …
