Using data from the 2015 National Financial Capability Study (NFCS), this study examined the association between financial capability and student loan decisions among borrowers, while focusing on how the association differs across age groups (age 18-34, 35-54, and 55+). The study sample included 7,491 student loan holders. In the study, 51.4% of student loan holders are age 18-34, 20% of those age 35-54, and 11.7% of those age 55+. The descriptive results …

The Social Dynamics Of Protected Area Centered Ecosystems, Ryan Tarver Apr 2019

The Social Dynamics Of Protected Area Centered Ecosystems, Ryan Tarver

Student Research Symposium

In the United States many of these protected areas have been designated as national parks and are managed by the National Parks Service. The jurisdictional boundaries of National Parks rarely cover an entire ecosystem. Therefore, the activities that take place beyond the park boundaries must be considered when trying to understand the ecosystem at a landscape scale. Furthermore, when it comes to land stewardship, it is important to realize the social dynamics that influence the larger protected area centered ecosystem (PACE). A PACE includes various public agencies and private land owners that make up a management mosaic. Land management jurisdictions …

When asked if their Education of Students with Disabilities course (SPED 4000) addressed teaching …

Listener Impressions Of Individuals Who Use Alaryngeal Communication, Kate Scott Apr 2019

Listener Impressions Of Individuals Who Use Alaryngeal Communication, Kate Scott

Student Research Symposium

For individuals with laryngeal cancer, a multimodal treatment approach is commonly used, which often includes a total laryngectomy. Total laryngectomy involves surgical removal of the entire larynx, the muscular and cartilaginous structure in the neck, also known as the voice box. Subsequently, a hole is surgically created in the front of the neck and trachea (or windpipe), then a small tube and valve called a stoma is inserted into the hole. The purpose of the stoma is to reroute the respiratory pathway from the mouth and nose to this opening. For individuals who require a total laryngectomy, the ability to …

The Effect Of Religious Priming On Rape Victim Blame, Emma Heath

Student Research Symposium

Rape victim blame contributes to unreported incidents and failure to support victims (Ahrens, 2006). This study investigated the relation between religious priming and victim blame. Religious priming is when someone is exposed to ideas of God or religion. Studies show that when participants are primed with religion, they engage in more prosocial behavior (Shariff & Norenzayan, 2007). The present study aimed to examine whether the benefit of religious priming extends to reducing rape victim blame. Data were collected using a Qualtrics Panel (N=260). Analyses revealed Religious Fundamentalism (i.e. level of religiosity) to be significantly correlated with victim blame (r(259) = …

Depression Mediates The Association Of Disordered Eating Behaviors And Sexual Function In Female Service Members And Veterans, Whitney Livingston

Student Research Symposium

Introduction: Poor sexual function is comprised of diminished sexual desire and arousal, presence of sexual pain, inability to reach orgasm, and loss of satisfaction. Worse sexual function is associated with disordered eating behavior; however, the mechanism through which this association exists remains unclear. Theory suggests that depression mediates the association of disordered eating behaviors and poor sexual function in female service members and veterans. Indeed, veterans with depression have almost 12 times higher odds of having an eating disorder diagnosis and 7 times higher odds of having a sexual dysfunction disorder, relative to those without depression. The purpose of the …

Changes In Attitude Towards Science Among College Students In A General Education Life Science Course, Michelle Burrows Apr 2019

Changes In Attitude Towards Science Among College Students In A General Education Life Science Course, Michelle Burrows

Student Research Symposium

General education science courses are often required in higher education in fulfillment of a general science requirement for a degree program. However, students may have negative attitudes toward science when they do not perceive a connection with their degree, career goals, or their everyday life. Students' negative attitudes toward learning science can decrease their desire to further their science knowledge (Gogolin & Swartz, 1992). Because a basic understanding of science is important to function and make informed decisions in society, it is imperative that we recognize ways to improve students' attitudes toward science. Students enrolled in a breadth level life …

In particular, by applying a set of text mining and data mining techniques (e.g., Classification and Regression …

Get The Frack Outta Here, Jordan Love, Jordan Nathan Apr 2019

Get The Frack Outta Here, Jordan Love, Jordan Nathan

Student Research Symposium

The term hydraulic fracturing, is a method utilized for the extraction of oil or gas from 'eccentric' supplies, for example, shale (Williams, 2017). This topic of fracking has come with two sides and has created some public misunderstanding on hydraulic fracking, with those who agree with fracking and feel it is an important environmental tool that helps the world, and helps the community bring in more revenue, and then the side that does not agree with fracking and feels the risks outweigh the rewards: contaminate ground water supplies, its hazardous conditions, and the industrialization impacts on communities (Ladd, 2014). There …

Countermovement To Marketization Of Water (A Comparative Study Between Iran And Us), Elham Hoominfar

Student Research Symposium

Environmental movements are one of the important sources of resistance against degradations which are results of economic or development projects in natural resources and the marketization of the environment (Wolford &Keene, 2015; Robbins, 2012; and 2004; McAfee & Shapiro, 2010; Spronk, 2007; Escobar, 2004). Since the 1970s, environmental protests have become more and more influential with regard to neoliberal environmental policy. Environmental movements, as examined within the context of political ecology, reveal the unequal distribution of power in terms of control of the environment and access to natural resources (Robbins 2012). The study focuses on two water transfer projects to …

Emotional Labor, Gender, And Social Interaction In Animal Care, Michael Briscoe Apr 2019

Emotional Labor, Gender, And Social Interaction In Animal Care, Michael Briscoe

Student Research Symposium

Animal caretakers fill an important role in society - performing both hard and dirty work as they look after animals, and the overwhelming majority of nonfarm animal caretakers are women. This ethnographic study was conducted over the course of 11 weeks at an animal boarding facility. It finds that caring for animals is emotionally taxing labor, and that employees feel this type of work is particularly suited for women - though the exact reasons why vary. The animals themselves often serve as social facilitators between both staff and customers as employees navigate the stressful environment.
