Combining Structure-Based Drug Design And Pharmacophores, Renate Griffith, T. T. T. Luu, James A. Garner, Paul A. Keller

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Development towards integrated computer-aided drug design methodologies is presented by utilising crystal structure complexes to produce structure-based pharmacophores. These novel pharmacophores represent the ligand features that are involved in interactions with the target protein, as well as the space around the ligand occupied by the protein. The protein-ligand complexes can also yield information about all interactions that ligands could potentially form with the binding site, as well as about the size of the binding cavity. Together, these describe a 'superligand', which can also be viewed as a pharmacophore. Various types of novel pharmacophores are discussed and compared, using HIV-1 Reverse …

Symbolic Revolutions And The Australian Archaeological Record, Mark W. Moore, Adam R. Brumm Jan 2005

Symbolic Revolutions And The Australian Archaeological Record, Mark W. Moore, Adam R. Brumm

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Australia was colonized by at least 40,000 bp and scientists agree that the continent was only ever occupied by anatomically and behaviourally modern humans. Australia thus offers an alternative early record for the archaeological expression of behavioural modernity. This review finds that the pattern of change in the Australian archaeological sequence bears remarkable similarity to the pattern from the Lower to Upper Palaeolithic in the Old World, a finding that is inconsistent with the 'symbolic revolution' model of the origin of modern behaviour. This highlights the need for archaeologists to rethink the implications of the various criteria and scales of …

The Early Palaeozoic Cape River Metamorphics consist mainly of psammitic gneiss and schist and occur as an extensive linear belt at the western margin of the Charters Towers Province 200 km southwest of Townsville in the northern Tasmanides. A prominent foliation (S2) is the main structure in the belt and is associated with tight to isoclinal folds, subparallel mineral and intersection lineations, and boudinaged pods of vein quartz and pegmatite. In the southwest, the main foliation is a crenulation cleavage (S2) related to D2 deformation. It overprints steeply dipping foliation (S1) formed in …

The Illawarra Beaches 1900-1945: A Place To Become Bronzed, Christine Metusela Jan 2005

The Illawarra Beaches 1900-1945: A Place To Become Bronzed, Christine Metusela

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

It was not until the early 1900s that the Australian beach first emerged as a western recreational space. Swimming (known as surf bathing) became a legalised practice, surf lifesaving became institutionalised and activities such as surfing were introduced; all things that make up an important part of Australian culture today. This article examines the emergence of the surf lifesaving movement in the lllawarra between 1900 and 1945. By analysing surf club records the beach space can be seen as a place that has been 'made' and socially constructed. The surf lifesaving discourse brings insights into the beach making processes and …

An Automated Gis Method For Modeling Relative Wave Exposure Within Complex Reef-Island Systems: A Case Study Of The Great Barrier Reef, Marjetta L. Puotinen Jan 2005

An Automated Gis Method For Modeling Relative Wave Exposure Within Complex Reef-Island Systems: A Case Study Of The Great Barrier Reef, Marjetta L. Puotinen

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Patterns of wave energy play a significant role in shaping the long-term structure of coral reef communities worldwide. For example, sections of reefs have been shown to vary greatly in morphology (dominant size class, growth form) as coral colonies adapt in response to local-scale differences in the wave heights typically experienced. These differences result in zonation (crest, lagoon, and slope), producing characteristic growth forms and species assemblages that vary in their vulnerability to damage from waves (Done 1993). Those communities experiencing the greatest typical wave energy align themselves parallel to the water flow, adopt stream-lined forms and are usually smaller …

Toxicity, Biotransformation, And Mode Of Action Of Arsenic In Two Freshwater Microalgae (Chlorella Sp. And Monoraphidium Arcuatum), Jacqueline L. Levy, Jennifer L. Stauber, Merrin S. Adams, William A. Maher, Jason K. Kirby, Dianne F. Jolley Jan 2005

The toxicity of As(V) and As(III) to two axenic tropical 15 freshwater microalgae, Chlorella sp. and Monoraphidium arcuatum, was determined using 72-h growth rate inhibition bioassays. Both organisms were tolerant to As(III) (72-h IC50, concentration to cause 50% inhibition of growth, of 25 and 15 mg As(III)/L, respectively). Chlorella sp. was also tolerant to As(V) with no effect on growth rate over 72 h at concentrations up to 0.8 mg/L (72-h IC50 of 25 mg As(V)/L). M. arcuatum was more sensitive to As(V) (72-h IC50 of 0.25 mg As(V)/L). An increase in phosphate in the growth medium (0.15 to 1.5 …

Evidence For Altitude-Dependent Photolysis-Induced 18o Isotopic Fractionation In Stratospheric Ozone, Vanessa E. Haverd, Geoffrey C. Toon, David W. Griffith

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

We present vertical profiles of 18O fractionations in ozone, measured by balloon-borne infrared remote sensing between 15 and 40 km. The magnitudes of the 16O16O18O (668O3) and 16O18O16O (686O3) fractionations are 13.5 +/- 2.7% and 7.7 +/- 2.2%, averaged over the 20-35 km altitude range, in good agreement with previous atmospheric measurements by mass spectrometry and both infrared and far infrared remote sensing spectroscopy. We use our fractionation profiles, together with known fractionation effects of the ozone formation reaction, to deduce …

Tropical Cyclone Disturbance Of Coral Communities Of The Great Barrier Reef, 1969-2003, Marjetta L. Puotinen Jan 2005

Tropical Cyclone Disturbance Of Coral Communities Of The Great Barrier Reef, 1969-2003, Marjetta L. Puotinen

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The primary building block of coral reef ecosystems, whether an isolated mid-ocean atoll or a complex system of thousands of reefs, are the individual coral colonies that combine to form the reef structures which host coral communities. The state of a coral reef community (i.e. percentage coral coverage, dominant growth forms and size classes), or any other ecosystem, at any given time is the result of interactions between a range of disturbances and routine ecological processes that operate across a continuum of spatial and temporal scales (Gunderson et al 2002). The biological (living coral colonies) and structural (dead coral framework …

Quasi-Static Analysis Of Defected Ground Structure, Nemai C. Karmakar, Sushim Mukul Roy, Isaac Balbin, Gerhard F. Swiegers

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

A quasi-static equivalent circuit model of a dumbbell shaped defected ground structure (DGS) is developed. The equivalent circuit model is derived from the equivalent inductance and capacitance developed due to the perturbed returned current path on the ground and the narrow gap, respectively. The theory is validated against the commercial full-wave solver CST Microwave Studio. Finally, the calculated results are compared with the measured results. Good agreement between the theory, the commercially available numerical analyses and the experimental results validates the developed theoretical model.

This paper presents synthesis and characterization of polypyrrole based conducting polymers in terms of electronic and mechanical disciplines. Using the electrochemical polymerization approach, conducting polymer samples with different dimensions (length, width, and thickness) was fabricated. For each sample, both sinusoidal and step excitations were used to study its mechanical and electrical properties. An equivalent electric circuit based on constant phase element (CPE) is proposed to model such responses. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) method was used to identify the relationship between the dimensions of conducting polymers and model elements parameters.

Does Mate Guarding Prevent Rival Mating In Snow Skinks? A Test Using Aflp, Mats M. Olsson, Beata Ujvari, Erik Wapstra, Thomas R. Madsen, Rick Shine, S. Bensch

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

We report on likely mixed paternity in a natural population of snow skinks (Niveoscincus mirolepidotus) from alpine Tasmania, Australia. This species is nonterritorial and males guard females after copulation, suggesting that guarding behavior has evolved to prevent rival mating of still-receptive females. To what degree does this mate-guarding prevent rival copulations? We sampled gravid females at random in the wild and looked for within-clutch mixed paternity among their offspring using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). Incorporating all visualized fragments, offspring band-sharing based on maternal bands was 0.94 (60.05, SD), whereas for paternal fragments it was 0.54 (60.46, SD). We then …

A coupled-channel Schrödinger equation (CSE) model of photodissociation, which includes the effects of all interactions between the , , and and the and states, is employed to study the effects of rotation on the lowest- band oscillator strengths and predissociationlinewidths. Significant rotational dependences are found which are in excellent agreement with recent experimental results, where comparisons are possible. New extreme-ultraviolet (EUV)photoabsorption spectra of the key transition of are also presented and analyzed, revealing apredissociationlinewidth peaking near . This behavior can be reproduced only if the triplet structure of the state is included explicitly in the CSE-model calculations, with a spin-orbit …

The tropospheric mixing ratio profile of ethylene (C2H4)(C2H4) has been retrieved from a high spectral resolution ground-based infrared solar absorption spectrum. The spectrum was recorded during intense fires in New South Wales, Australia on January 1, 2002, and was analyzed with the C2H4C2H4 spectral parameters added to the 2000 HITRAN compilation. Absorption by C2H4C2H4 in the smoke-affected spectrum extends over a broad spectral range in a region with observable rotational fine structure. The fine structure occurs in addition to the View the MathML source949.5cm-1ν7ν7 band Q branch that is traditionally used to quantify C2H4C2H4 amounts from infrared atmospheric measurements assuming …

Localized Storms, Edward A. Bryant Jan 2005

Localized Storms, Edward A. Bryant

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The previous chapter was mainly concerned with the effects of strong winds generated by secondary features of general air circulation. These winds were associated with the development of low-pressure cells spanning areas of 10,000–100,000 km−2. While tropical cyclones and extra-tropical depressions produce some of the strongest winds and highest amounts of precipitation over the widest areas, they are by no means the only source of high winds or heavy precipitation. These values can be matched by thunderstorms, which cover no more than 500 km2 in area and rarely travel more than 100–200 km before dissipating. They can produce high-magnitude, short-period …

Synthesis Of Carbocyclic Hydantocidins Via Regioselective And Diastereoselective Phosphine-Catalyzed [3+2]-Cycloadditions To 5-Methylenehydantoins, Tien Quoc Pham, Stephen G. Pyne, Brian W. Skelton, Allan H. White Jan 2005

Synthesis Of Carbocyclic Hydantocidins Via Regioselective And Diastereoselective Phosphine-Catalyzed [3+2]-Cycloadditions To 5-Methylenehydantoins, Tien Quoc Pham, Stephen G. Pyne, Brian W. Skelton, Allan H. White

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The phosphine-catalysed [3+2]-cycloaddition of 5-methylenehydantoins 4 with the ylides 5, derived from addition of tributylphosphine to the 2-butynoic acid derivatives, 6a-d, gives spiro-heterocyclic products. The camphor sultam derivative 6b gives optically active products. Noteable was that the ylides derived from ethyl 2-butynoate and the 3-(2-butynoyl)-1,3-oxazolidin-2-one derivatives 6c and 6d gave spiro-heterocyclic products with reverse regioselectivities. The N,N-dibenzylprotected cycloadduct has been converted to carbocyclic hydantocidin and 6,7-diepi-carbocyclic hydantocidin.

The Beating Of Rodney King: The Dynamics Of Backfire, Brian Martin Jan 2005

The Beating Of Rodney King: The Dynamics Of Backfire, Brian Martin

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

The 1991 beating of Rodney King by Los Angeles police provides rich case material in how an attack perceived as unjust can backfire. Drawing on nonviolence theory, an original framework is developed to analyze attacks as potential backfires that are usually, but not always, inhibited. Attackers can use a variety of methods to inhibit backfires, including covering up the attack, devaluing the target, reinterpreting the events, using official channels, and using intimidation and bribery. Writings on the Rodney King beating include evidence on the use of each of these methods. Studying the backfire process offers improved understanding on how to …

Understanding Barriers To Leisure Travel - Tourist Fears As A Marketing Basis, Sara Dolnicar Jan 2005

Understanding Barriers To Leisure Travel - Tourist Fears As A Marketing Basis, Sara Dolnicar

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

The usefulness of investigating fears tourists associate with leisure travel as basis for strategic and operational marketing is investigated. Tourism-related fears are elicited from the tourism marketplace to gain insight into the precise risks today’s tourists perceive and heterogeneity of respondents with regard to these risk perceptions are investigated in the context of domestic and overseas travel. Distinctly different patterns of perceived risks emerge for different destination contexts as well as subsegments of tourists. This knowledge could form a good basis for optimising marketing communication messages to address tourists’ concerns more effectively.

Balancing Money And Mission In A Local Church Budget, H. J. Irvine

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Purpose. This study of budgeting practices and attitudes to budgeting in a local church uses Booth’s (1993) framework to consider the potential conflict between the “sacred” agenda of the church and the “secular” nature of accounting. Design/methodology/approach. Over a six month period, the author conducted a series of semi-structured interviews with key church leaders, and studied financial reports and the minutes of church meetings. Findings. Clergy and lay people alike, far from viewing accounting as an unwelcome intrusion into their church’s sacred agenda, integrated belief in their church’s mission with the need to raise and manage the money necessary to …

Trade-Gdp Nexus In Iran: An Application Of The Autoregressive Distributed Lag (Ardl) Model, Mosayeb Pahlavani, E. Wilson, A. C. Worthington

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

This paper employs annual time series data on Iranian exports, imports and economic growth from 1960 to 2003. Procedures are used to endogenously identify structural breaks in these macroeconomic series and then to incorporate these breaks in unit root tests. An initial finding is that the endogenously determined structural breaks coincide with important phenomena in the Iranian economy, including the Islamic revolution in 1978 and the start of the Iran-Iraq war in 1980. The error correction version of the autoregressive distributed lag procedure is then employed to specify the short and long-term determinants of economic growth in the Iranian economy …

The Student And New Left Movements, Anthony Ashbolt

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

For some years now, the 1960s have been contested terrain. Many-commentators have rushed to specious judgements about the radical politics of the era, while others have struggled valiantly to keep memories alive. Much of the politics of the contemporary epoch is being played out through the lens of the sixties. This seems like a grand and perhaps foolish claim but it needs to be understood that the neo-liberal and/or neoconservative agenda (and I will include hawkish foreign policy in this) is substantially directed at burying the sixties, the radical sixties. The gains of the various social movements, in particular the …

Death, Decline Or Atrophy? The Necessity Of Politics, Anthony Ashbolt

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

While thinking about the contemporary state of politics, it is very difficult to shake off a recurring image from the brilliant television series A Very Peculiar Practice. In that show, a wonderful aging character was writing a book about the parlous state of higher education in Great Britain. 'Death of the University' muttered Jock into a portable tape recorder, between swigs of Scotch, as he wandered around campus despairing at the shattered values and distorted priorities of the new university. Jock spoke for all of us who care about education. I hope to be speaking to all of us who …

Art And Advocacy: Mary Alice Evatt In The 1930s And '40s, Melissa Boyde

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

On her return to Australia from Europe in 1939, Mary Alice Evatt remarked in an interview for the Australian Women s Weekly that paintings devoted to gum trees, sheep, koalas and misty seascapes were the only Australian works selected to hang in World Fair Art Exhibitions. In addition she derided the decision makers who overlooked Australia's modernist, experimental artists, many of whom were women: 'if only those in authority were to select the paintings of Australian artists who prefer creation to photography, and were less overawed by official selection bodies, Australia might find a worthy place on the art map …
