Humans can be ruthless in attacking each other — even without any physical violence. Individuals can be targets, sometimes inside organisations, sometimes in domestic or public arenas. In workplaces, for example, individuals can be singled out for attack because they are different or because they are a threat or unwanted by those with power. Targets of attack often suffer enormously, with severe effects on their health and well-being. Society is also damaged through loss of conscientious workers and citizens and through squelching of ideas that deserve attention. A range of innovative technologies and applications offer exciting opportunities to address environmental issues. This is particularly relevant to computers and Information Technology (IT) more generally where new computational techniques and approaches to supporting business decision making have the potential to not only redress the carbon cost of that particular industry, but offer carbon savings to the broader community. I Can't Believe It's Not Measurement: The Legacy Of Operationism In Social-Scientific Uses Of Numbers, George Matheson

What is called measurement in human sciences such as sociology is different from other uses of the term, embracing not only quantification in the strict sense, but also all kinds of scaling, ranking and even classification per se. This paper considers such habits as a legacy of the ‘Operational’ measurement theory of S. S. Stevens, wherein science meant measurement, but concepts (e.g., measurement) meant whatever we all agreed they did.
