This paper describes the design of a research project that adopted a designbased research (DBR) approach to create and implement an online community of second language learners of Italian. For one semester a group of sixteen intermediate and advanced level students of Italian, their teacher and seven Italian native speaker facilitators participated in the activities of an online community of practice and interacted with each other through the communication tools and resources of an online learning management system. This paper presents the four phases of the study using the DBR model outlined by Reeves (2006) and the methodology that informs …

This paper describes a study where design-based research (DBR) is used as a framework for the design and implementation of an online community of foreign language learners, in the context of learning Italian as a second language at university. An online community of practice that included a group of second and third year students of Italian, and seven native speakers facilitators, was developed and implemented according to the principles that guide community development (Lave and Wenger, 1991; Wenger, 1998). For one semester community members interacted and collaborated with each other through the communication tools of an online learning management system …

From Cobra Grubs to Dragons' was the suggested title for a cultural tour of the Fairfield area in Sydney developed by group of people through a partnership between the Centre for Cultural Research. The researchers involved in the project felt that this title was an evocative description of the tour which guides participants in visiting numerous sites illustrating Fairfield's cultural diversity.
