On The Feasibility Of Partial Slip Reversal And De-Twinning During The Cyclic Loading Of Twip Steel, Ahmed A. Saleh, Bjorn Clausen, Donald W. Brown, Elena V. Pereloma, Christopher H. J Davies, Carlos N. Tome, Azdiar A. Gazder

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A recently modified Elasto-Plastic Self-Consistent (EPSC) model which empirically accounts for both intergranular and intragranular back stresses has been successfully used to simulate the cyclic (tension-compression) loading behaviour of an Fe-24Mn-3Al-2Si-1Ni-0.06C TWinning Induced Plasticity (TWIP) steel between strain limits of ±1%. Lattice strain measurements acquired via in-situ neutron diffraction were used to further validate the modelling results. An improved prediction of the pronounced Bauschinger effect during unloading is achieved when the reversibility of partial slip in the 〈112〉 direction is accounted for. This result indicates a potential contribution of the stress-induced separation of partial dislocations to the observed early ...

Conceptualizing Metalinguistic Understanding In Writing | Conceptualización De La Competencia Metalingüística En La Escritura, Debra Myhill, Susan M. Jones

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

This paper will present a theoretical analysis of research on metalinguistic understanding, illustrating how current research does not yet adequately address metalinguistic development in writing. Existing research on metalinguistic understanding has focused more on language acquisition, oral development and bilingual learners. Research on metalinguistic understanding in writing has tended to look more closely at young learners developing writing skills in spelling, transcription and orthography. Thus, theoretical accounts of metalinguistic understanding are currently insufficient to explain developing metalinguistic mastery of composing text and the relationships between declarative and procedural metalinguistic knowledge in writing. If we are to understand better the nature ...

Efeitos De Longo Prazo Da Educacao Infantil: Evidencias E Politica, Edward Melhuish

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

In recent decades there has been an accumulation of evidence linking children's experience of early childhood education and care with longer-term child development outcomes. The provision of early childhood education and care is dependent upon the social and economic context of a country, which leads to great diversity between countries in the policy adopted. International evidence is used to show the longer-term benefits that result from good quality early childhood education and care, with particular emphasis on evidence from the UK. The evidence shows that benefits exist for social, cognitive and educational development and have consequences not only for ...

Wavelet Transform Based De-Noising Method For Self Mixing Interferometry Signals, Yuan Sun, Yanguang Yu, Jiangtao Xi Jan 2012

Wavelet Transform Based De-Noising Method For Self Mixing Interferometry Signals, Yuan Sun, Yanguang Yu, Jiangtao Xi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Self-mixing interferometry (SMI) signals are observed from a laser diode (LD) with optical feedbacks induced by an external target. SMI signals carry information related to both of the target and parameters of the LDs. However, the noise contained in SMI signals greatly degrades the applications of the SMI systems. This paper proposes a wavelet transform based de-noising method which can effectively eliminate noise while keeping an SMI waveform less changed. The proposed method is verified by both simulations and experiments

This paper deals with the teaching of Spanish pronunciation to Irish students. If we want learners to achieve a good command of the sounds of Castilian Spanish, we must focus on the phonetic/phonological distance between English and Spanish; however, it is the phonetic/phonological distance between the regional variety of the L1 of the speaker and Castilian Spanish (the variety that we adopt as the target model) that will have the biggest influence in this learning process. After comparing linguistic peculiarities of the English language (RP), and of the variety of the Republic of Ireland, with those of Castilian ...

Modélisation De La Mobilité Résidentielle En Vue D'Une Micro-Simulation Des Évolutions De Population, Eric Cornelis, Johan Barthelemy, Xavier Pauly, Fabien Walle

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Mobilité Humaine Et Changement Environnemental: Une Analyse Historique Et Textuelle De La Politique Des Nations Unies, Karen Elizabeth Mcnamara, Christopher R. Gibson

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

The United Nations plays a leadership role in protecting the environment as well as people dislocated from their homes; however such roles remain mutually exclusive. At present, there is no United Nations framework for human mobility because of environmental change, even if among other factors. This article conducts a historical analysis of policy documents produced by the United Nations and subsidiary agencies. Specifically, this article unpacks different textual descriptions of people displaced by environmental change in selected United Nations documents over the last 40 years. Based on an assessment of these documents, subject categories of people displaced by environmental change ...

From google translator (part of the introduction) In diverse organizations, including the work places, daily there is dynamic cradles in talent, commitment, support, solidarity, amiability, friendship, camaraderie and work set for the sake of achieving the objectives that are common. Nevertheless, with too much frequency the internal discords give rise to conflicts, in addition, the common thing is that groups inside such organizations form, sometimes being generated among them created interests that lead to true battles to reach or to maintain the power to control processes and resources, as well as to impose points of view. Tie destructive games to ...

Un Hombre De San Juan: Aproximación Facial En Antropología, Susan Hayes

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Within both anthropology and forensic identification, a facial approximation (also known as "facial reconstruction") is often presented as an accomplished fact, with minimal, or no evidence of the research and methods used to achieve the result. This paper presents a detailed overview of the research and methods used for a 2D computer graphic facial approximation of a prehistoric man unearthed in the Jachal Valley, San Juan Province, Argentina. Understood to be a member of the extinct Huarpe, this individual's skull displays many of the morphological features that are consistent with what is known about this group of early Amerindian ...

Much research indicates the importance of interactional experience for young children in developing their competence. In particular sensitivity in interaction has been associated with beneficial developmental outcomes and is often regarded as a central component of good quality child care. This study considers some alternative ways of measuring the sensitivity of caregivers. Thirty professional caregiver-infant dyads were observed in three different situations: in the laboratury during free-play (1), during a task (2) and at the nursery itself while caring for 10 infants with a colleague (3). Results indicated that their sensitivity was highest in situation 1; this score was significantly ...

De Filtration To Remove Cryptosporidium, Jerry E. Ongerth, Primrose E. Hutton Jan 1997

De Filtration To Remove Cryptosporidium, Jerry E. Ongerth, Primrose E. Hutton

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Laboratory-scale testing investigated the degree of Cryptosporidium oocyst reduction provided by diatomaceous earth (DE) filtration. Three grades of DE from two manufacturers were used in the tests. Reduction was measured using seeded river water applied to Walton test filters. Tests were run for filtration rates of 1 and 2 gpm/sq ft (2.4 and 4.9 m/h). Each run was replicated three times, and quality control was rigorous. Approximately 6 logs of reduction in the concentration of Cryptosporidium oocysts can be expected under routine operating conditions using DE grades having permeability of <1.2 Darcy. Log reductions varied predictably according to the permeability of the DE grade and the filtration rate; they were significantly higher at the higher filtration rate. Agreement was excellent between runs, enabling researchers to distinguish with consistent statistical significance the differences in performance.
