Differences In Membrane Acyl Phospholipid Composition Between An Endothermic Mammal And An Ectothermic Reptile Are Not Limited To Any Phospholipid Class, Stephen J. Blanksby, Todd W. Mitchell, Anthony J. Hulbert, Paul Else, K Ekroos Jan 2007

Differences In Membrane Acyl Phospholipid Composition Between An Endothermic Mammal And An Ectothermic Reptile Are Not Limited To Any Phospholipid Class, Stephen J. Blanksby, Todd W. Mitchell, Anthony J. Hulbert, Paul Else, K Ekroos

Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences - Papers (Archive)

This study examined questions concerning differences in the acyl composition of membrane phospholipids that have been linked to the faster rates of metabolic processes in endotherms versus ectotherms. In liver, kidney, heart and brain of the ectothermic reptile, Trachydosaurus rugosus, and the endothermic mammal, Rattus norvegicus, previous findings of fewer unsaturates but a greater unsaturation index (UI) in membranes of the mammal versus those of the reptile were confirmed. Moreover, the study showed that the distribution of phospholipid head-group classes was similar in the same tissues of the reptile and mammal and that the differences in acyl composition …

Dynamic Linkages Between The Thai And International Stock Markets, Surachai Chancharat, Abbas Valadkhani Jan 2007

Dynamic Linkages Between The Thai And International Stock Markets, Surachai Chancharat, Abbas Valadkhani

This paper investigates the existence of cointegration and causality between the stock market price indices of Thailand and its major trading partners using monthly data (1987-2005). The Engle-Granger two-step procedure and Gregory and Hansen (1996) test (allowing for one structural break) provide no evidence of a long-run relationship between the stock prices of Thailand and these countries. We argue that there exist potential long-run benefits from diversifying the investment portfolios internationally to reduce the associated systematic risks across countries. However, in the short run there are three unidirectional Granger causalities running from the stock returns of Hong Kong, the Philippines …

Differences Within And Between Travel Preference, Planned Travel And Choice Behavior Of Australians Travelling To Asian And Overseas Destinations, Uraiporn Kattiyapornpong, Kenneth E. Miller Jan 2007

Differences Within And Between Travel Preference, Planned Travel And Choice Behavior Of Australians Travelling To Asian And Overseas Destinations, Uraiporn Kattiyapornpong, Kenneth E. Miller

This study seeks to examine differences in travel preference, travel intention and destination choice behavior of an aggregated set of Australian travelers. Additionally the study seeks to relate income, age, gender, life cycle and life style of Australians to the preference, planning and choice of Asian and overseas destinations. A large representative sample of 49,000 Australian respondents is utilized. Binomial regression is used to profile travelers to Asia and overseas in general. Specific significant variables and differences are highlighted. There are consistent relationships between travel preference, planning and choice and the set of independent variables of income, life cycle and …

Within the framework of the Network for Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC), regular ground-based Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) measurements of many species are performed at several locations. Inversion schemes provide vertical profile information and characterization of the retrieved products which are therefore relevant for contributing to the validation of MIPAS profiles in the stratosphere and upper troposphere. We have focused on the species HNO3 and N2O at 5 NDACC-sites distributed in both hemispheres, i.e., Jungfraujoch (46.5 degrees N) and Kiruna (68 degrees N) for the northern hemisphere, and Wollongong (34 degrees S), Lauder (45 degrees S) and Arrival Heights …

Interactions Between The Chloride Anion And Aromatic Molecules: Infrared Spectra Of The Cl-_C6h5ch3, Cl-_C6h5nh2 And Cl-_C6h5oh Complexes, Corinna Emmeluth, Berwyck L. J Poad, Christopher D. Thompson, Evan J. Bieske Jan 2007

The Cl-−C6H5CH3·Ar, Cl-−C6H5NH2·Ar, and Cl-−C6H5OH·Ar anion complexes are investigated using infrared photodissociation spectroscopy and ab initio calculations at the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level. The results indicate that for Cl-−C6H5NH2 and Cl-−C6H5OH, the Cl- anion is attached to the substituent group by a single near-linear hydrogen bond. For Cl-−C6H5CH3, the Cl- is attached to an ortho-hydrogen atom …

A Study Of Hippocampal Shape Difference Between Genders By Efficient Hypothesis Test And Discriminative Deformation, Luping Zhou, Richard Hartley, Paulette Lieby, Nick Barnes, Kaarin Anstey, Nicolas Cherbuin, Perminder Sachdev Jan 2007

A Study Of Hippocampal Shape Difference Between Genders By Efficient Hypothesis Test And Discriminative Deformation, Luping Zhou, Richard Hartley, Paulette Lieby, Nick Barnes, Kaarin Anstey, Nicolas Cherbuin, Perminder Sachdev

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Hypothesis testing is an important way to detect the statistical difference between two populations. In this paper, we use the Fisher permutation and bootstrap tests to differentiate hippocampal shape between genders. These methods are preferred to traditional hypothesis tests which impose assumptions on the distribution of the samples. An efficient algorithm is adopted to rapidly perform the exact tests. We extend this algorithm to multivariate data by projecting the original data onto an "informative direction" to generate a scalar test statistic. This "informative direction" is found to preserve the original discriminative information. This direction is further used in this paper …

A Prolegomenon To The Relation Between Accounting, Language And Ethics, Cecil E. Arrington Jan 2007

A Prolegomenon To The Relation Between Accounting, Language And Ethics, Cecil E. Arrington

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

This essay outlines the preliminary structure of a moral ontology of accounting understood as discourse. To speak of an ontology of accounting is to speak of the most general features of accounting, those features of its existence that are present irrespective of variations in observed “accountings,” of ways in which accounting manifests itself in lived experience. To speak of a moral ontology is to construe those general features as products of human choices and actions which follow from axiological (value-based) commitments to pursue the good and just life, however that life might be understood, and indeed understood differently by different …
