Australian Parents' Perceptions Of Factors That Influence Their Children's Pork Consumption: An Exploratory Qualitative Study, Elizabeth Neale, Deborah J. Nolan-Clark, Karen E. Charlton Jan 2015

Australian Parents' Perceptions Of Factors That Influence Their Children's Pork Consumption: An Exploratory Qualitative Study, Elizabeth Neale, Deborah J. Nolan-Clark, Karen E. Charlton

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Background Pork provides key nutrients such as protein, thiamin and selenium, however fresh pork is not commonly included in the diets of Australian children, with processed pork preferred. Current dietary guidelines emphasise the consumption of fresh meat in preference to processed meat, and childhood eating habits are likely to persist throughout the lifespan. Investigation of factors influencing children's pork consumption is therefore warranted. The aim of this exploratory study was to investigate parents' perceptions of factors that affect their children's consumption of pork and to identify barriers to the intake of fresh pork, in particular. Methods Six semi-structured focus group …

Telomeric G-Quadruplexes Are A Substrate And Site Of Localization For Human Telomerase, Aaron L. Moye, Karina C. Porter, Scott Cohen, Tram Phan, Katherine G. Zyner, Natsuki Sasaki, George Lovrecz, Jennifer L. Beck, Tracy Bryan

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

It has been hypothesized that G-quadruplexes can sequester the 3′ end of the telomere and prevent it from being extended by telomerase. Here we purify and characterize stable, conformationally homogenous human telomeric G-quadruplexes, and demonstrate that human telomerase is able to extend parallel, intermolecular conformations in vitro. These G-quadruplexes align correctly with the RNA template of telomerase, demonstrating that at least partial G-quadruplex resolution is required. A highly purified preparation of human telomerase retains this extension ability, establishing that the core telomerase enzyme complex is sufficient for partial G-quadruplex resolution and extension. The parallel-specific G-quadruplex ligand N-methyl mesoporphyrin IX (NMM) …

Effects Of Additives On The Dyeing Of Cotton Yarn With The Aqueous Extract Of Combretum Latifolium Blume Stems, Montra Chairat, John B. Bremner, Siritron Samosorn, Warayuth Sajomsang, Wassana Chongkraijak, Anongnet Saisara

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Flavonoid constituents from the aqueous extract of the stems of Combretum latifolium Blume sourced in Thailand have potential use as dyestuffs for cotton dyeing. In an effort to improve current natural dyeing methods with this extract, further aspects of the process were studied. It was found that, before equilibrium was reached, an increase in temperature led to an increase in dye adsorption rate of the extract; the initial rate and extent of dye adsorption was further increased by the addition of sodium chloride to the dyebath. In addition, cotton yarn pretreated with a chitosan solution (with and without a crosslinking …

Muscle Fatigue Resistance In The Rat Hindlimb In Vivo From Low Dietary Intakes Of Tuna Fish Oil That Selectively Increase Phospholipid N-3 Docosahexaenoic Acid According To Muscle Fibre Type, Renee Henry, Gregory E. Peoples, Peter L. Mclennan Jan 2015

Mclennan

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Dietary fish oil (FO) modulates muscle O2 consumption and contractile function, predictive of effects on muscle fatigue. High doses unattainable through human diet and muscle stimulation parameters used engender uncertainty in their physiological relevance. We tested the hypothesis that nutritionally relevant FO doses can modulate membrane fatty acid composition and muscle fatigue. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomised to control (10 % olive oil (OO) by weight) or low or moderate FO diet (LowFO and ModFO) (HiDHA tuna fish oil) for 15 weeks (LowFO: 0·3 % FO, 9·7 % OO, 0·25 % energy as EPA + DHA; ModFO: 1·25 % FO, …

The Logic Of Visitation: Tool-Use, Technology And Economy On Great Glennie Island, Southeastern Australia, Richard Fullagar

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Archaeological excavation over 30 years ago in a small granite cave on Great Glennie Island, 7 km off the southernmost tip of mainland Australia, revealed five stratigraphically distinct midden units with intermittent occupation over the last 2000 years. Fluctuations in tool stone (quartz and flint) abundance and the nature of tool use track a shift in economic focus from one dominant taxon (seabird) during initial visits to four (seal, seabird, fish and shellfish) in the last 500 years. An analysis of flint cortex distributions indicates that during the second visit people carried core tools and retouched flint flakes, and during …

Trends in the vertical distribution of ozone are reported and compared for a number of new and recently revised data sets. The amount of ozone-depleting compounds in the stratosphere (as measured by equivalent effective stratospheric chlorine - EESC) was maximised in the second half of the 1990s. We examine the periods before and after the peak to see if any change in trend is discernible in the ozone record that might be attributable to a change in the EESC trend, though no attribution is attempted. Prior to 1998, trends in the upper stratosphere (~ 45 km, 4 hPa) are found …

A Cascade Synthetic Route To New Bioactive Spiroindolinepyrido[1,2-A]Indolediones From Indirubin, Alexander Sele, John B. Bremner, Anthony C. Willis, Rachada Haritakun, Renate Griffith, Paul A. Keller

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

The allylation of indirubin produced the expected indolic N′-allylindirubin and N,N′-diallylindirubin derivatives in moderate yields, together with the corresponding N-substituted isatin products. At higher temperatures, the base-initiated reaction with allylic halides yielded spiroindolinepyrido[1,2-a]indolediones in a one-pot cascade reaction sequence with yields of up to 70%. These readily accessed, new spiro compounds represent the first reported examples of indirubin participating in cascade reactions. Preliminary in vitro biological testing of some of the products indicated promising activity against some cancer cell lines and against Plasmodium falciparum for two spiro derivatives. Computational methods were used to gain a greater understanding of the UV/Vis …

Biogeographical Variation In The Potential Effectiveness Of Prescribed Fire In South-Eastern Australia, Owen F. Price, Trent D. Penman, Ross A. Bradstock, Mathias M. Boer, Hamish Clarke

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Aim Prescribed fire is a common land management for reducing risks from unplanned fires. However, the universality of such effectiveness remains uncertain due to biogeographical variation in fuel types, climatic influences and fire regimes. Here, we explore biogeographical patterns in the effectiveness of prescribed fire by calculating leverage (the reduction in unplanned area burnt resulting from recent previous area burnt) across south-eastern Australia over a 25 year period. Location The 30 bioregions of south-eastern Australia. Methods We quantified leverage in each bioregion from fire records from 1975-2009, controlling for variation in annual weather. We also identified potential drivers of variation …

Proposal For A Continent 'Itsaqia' Amalgamated At 3.66 Ga And Rifted Apart From 3.53 Ga: Initiation Of A Wilson Cycle Near The Start Of The Rock Record, Allen Phillip Nutman, Vickie C. Bennett, Clark R. L Friend

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

A synthesis of the geological record of Earth's ten remaining oldest surviving gneiss complexes, each containing >3.6 Ga rocks, reveals a common history. We propose that the simplest scenario compatible with all observations is that of formation of an ancient continental mass, here named Itsaqia, by 3.66 Ga from amalgamation of earlier quartzofeldspathic crust, followed by initiation of continental break-up at 3.53 Ga by rifting. Evidence for this is reconstructed from the remaining oldest rock record (only ca. 10,000 km2 globally). Dominating the surviving fragments of the proposed Itsaqia continent are 3.9 to 3.66 Ga tonalites that represent juvenile crustal …

When A Lic Came To Town: The Impact Of Longitudinal Integrated Clerkships On A Rural Community Of Healthcare Practice, Judith N. Hudson, Brett A. Thomson, Kathryn M. Weston, Patricia J. Knight-Billington

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Introduction: Two small rural towns in Australia, where medical practitioners provide primary care to the population, including emergency, anaesthetic and obstetric services, were early adopters of an innovative year-long integrated clerkship (clinical placement) designed to foster medical student skill attainment and a commitment to underserved rural communities. Primary care vocational trainees had previously trained in the region. Engaging with the university to participate in the clerkship initiative for undergraduate medical education offered the local healthcare service an opportunity to really integrate education with service. This study sought perspectives from a multidisciplinary group of stakeholders on the impact of the longitudinal …

Measuring Data Quality Through A Source Data Verification Audit In A Clinical Research Setting, Lauren Houston, Yasmine Probst, Allison Martin

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Health data has long been scrutinised in relation to data quality and integrity problems. Currently, no internationally accepted or "gold standard" method exists measuring data quality and error rates within datasets. We conducted a source data verification (SDV) audit on a prospective clinical trial dataset. An audit plan was applied to conduct 100% manual verification checks on a 10% random sample of participant files. A quality assurance rule was developed, whereby if >5% of data variables were incorrect a second 10% random sample would be extracted from the trial data set. Error was coded: correct, incorrect (valid or invalid), not …

Two Lowland Tropical Spodosols From The Fiji Islands: First Report From Small Islands, David M. Leslie, Philomena Gangaiya, R John Morrison

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Spodosols, one of the major orders of soils in the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Taxonomy, are believed to be formed by down-profile movement of colloidal humic materials complexed with aluminum and iron. Conditions favoring formation of these soils are normally cool and humid climates, but some tropical Spodosols have been observed in continental and island situations, mainly at higher elevations. Here we report on observation of two Spodosols at low elevations in Fiji, the first such report for the South Pacific islands. Soil field descriptions and associated laboratory data are presented, along with interpretation of data in terms of …

Transcriptional And Posttranscriptional Regulation Of Bacillus Sp. Cdb3 Arsenic-Resistance Operon Ars1, Xuefei Yu, Wei Zheng, Somanath Bhat, John Andrew Aquilina, Ren Zhang

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Bacillus sp. CDB3 possesses a novel eight-gene ars cluster (ars1, arsRYCDATorf7orf8) with some unusual features in regard to expression regulation. This study demonstrated that the cluster is a single operon but can also produce a short three-gene arsRYC transcript. A hairpin structure formed by internal inverted repeats between arsC and arsD was shown to diminish the expression of the full operon, thereby probably acting as a transcription attenuator. A degradation product of the arsRYC transcript was also identified. Electrophoretic mobility shift analysis demonstrated that ArsR interacts with the ars1 promoter forming a protein-DNA complex that could be impaired by arsenite. …

Palaeolithic Zooarchaeology In Myanmar: A Review And Future Prospects, Tin Htut Aung, Benjamin Marwick, Cyler Conrad

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

The Anyathian culture, one of the prominent stone arte-fact traditions in Mainland Southeast Asia spanning the Pleistocene and Holocene, has been frequently described at archaeological sites in the central belt of Myanmar. Human exploitative patterns of plant and animal re-sources relating to the Anyathian are obscure due to the paucity of systematic stratigraphic excavations in Myan-mar. However, recent research in the States of Shan and Kayin has shown that Myanmar has the potential to contribute to a better understanding of human subsistence economies at hunter-gatherer sites throughout the Pleistocene and Holocene. This study reviews faunal evidence recovered in association with …

Body Size Mediated Effects Of Multiple Abiotic Stressors On The Growth And Social Behaviour Of An Estuarine Fish, Australian Bass (Macquaria Novemaculeata), Kaitlyn M. O'Mara, Marian Y. L Wong

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Anthropogenic climate change is expected to result in dramatic shifts in the abiotic conditions within estuaries, including an elevation of temperature and salinity levels. Even so, few studies have addressed the impacts of multiple abiotic stressors on the behaviour and life history of key estuarine species, such as those of biological and commercial importance. Here we used a cross-factored experimental design to tease apart the effects of temperature and salinity on intraspecific aggression and growth rates of a native estuarine fish species, the Australian bass (Macquaria novemaculeata). Juvenile bass were exposed to one of four treatment conditions: 1) baseline temperature …

Dental remains of Homo floresiensis excavated during 2002-2004 at Liang Bua, Flores, Indonesia, consist of one partial maxillary dentition, two nearly complete mandibular dentitions, and four isolated teeth. We present here morphological descriptions of all these specimens and report aspects of their dentition, occlusion, and oral health condition. This dental assemblage represents probably five but possibly four or six individuals. These different individuals share similar dental characteristics, supporting the view that the Liang Bua H. floresiensis assemblage represents a single population. We also reassess the previous claims for primitive and modern aspects of the H. floresiensis teeth. The previous studies …
