While migrant men may renegotiate the patriarchal dividend after resettlement in Australia, fundamental elements of their gendered behaviour and beliefs remain unchanged, and may even be reinforced. In particular, working hard in a paying job and doing so for the family while guiding and protecting it, are very strong practices and beliefs that migrant men both bring with them from their homelands, and encounter on their arrival. This cannot be a product of chance or an historical accident, but must reflect resilient underlying structures existent in private and public life.

Although a significant minority of Australia’s population is of non angloceltic origin, Australia’s national cinema has consistently understated the impact and the multiple ramifications of the migration experiences of the many ethnic groups constituting Australia society. Initially geared, in the 1950s, to projecting an image of Australia as an all-accepting earthly paradise, films and documentaries produced up to the end of the 1970s present themes that underscore the superiority of Australian values and the need for the many ethnic groups that have settled in the country to assimilate into mainstream society. The field of Italian Australian studies is both diverse and dynamic. It has embraced topics from outside its “traditional” ambit and has identified new areas of concern to scholars in the field. This volume examines from a post-colonial perspective one of the many and varied cultural practices — the creation of literary texts — established by migrants from Sicily and Calabria who constitute the two major Italian regional groups in Australia. There were a few Italians in Griffith when the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area Scheme began in 1913, but they did not arrive in large numbers until after the Second World War. They joined over a thousand people of Italian birth or direct descent who had succeeded at small-scale farming and displaced the majority of Australians who had been the original block-holders. This produced some resentment and discrimination, which led to Italians setting up their own economic and social networks. They did not however act as a single community ; fundamental divisions between Northern and Southern immigrants remained and persisted, and so …

While migration studies scholars have paid considerable attention to internal migration within Indonesia, as well as to international labour migration flows from Indonesia, they have rarely considered the intersections between these two processes. This article addresses this gap through a close analysis of migration flows in one of Indonesia’s key transit areas – the Riau Islands. We argue that in the borderlands the processes of internal and international migration are mutually constitutive. The Riau Islands’ status as a transit zone for international labour migrants and as a destination for internal migrants determines its demographic profile and policies of migration control. …

It will be argued within this paper, that women’s experiences of displacement and exclusion need to be situated in the relationship between globalisation and neoliberalism. I argue that forced and economic migrations are closely related and are often interchangeable expressions of global inequality. Neo liberal globalisation diminishes all human pursuits into buying and selling. It is elites in the North who have implemented neo-liberal policies into both the North and South over the past twenty five years. These policies have resulted in the eradication of social safeguards which have led to massive gendered displacement. While globalisation may conjure up a …

Although a number of studies on Italian Australian literature have been produced they have to date taken little account of the perception of the diverse experiences of migrants from different Italian regions which display substantial linguistic and cultural diversity and have developed literary cultures both different from and coincidental to Italian national literary culture. The only extensive study that has examined the literary culture of a regional Italian migrant group in Australia is Rando La Cava (1983) which explores the oral dialect literature of the Aeolian communities in Wollongong, Sydney and Melbourne.
